joining me, general jack keane. let's start with first this ready to get ready alert that is being reported. what do you make of it and what's going on. >> the possibility we could have nuclear war with north korea is there. we have to make certain our capability are what they should be. the military is taking all the necessary precautions to do that. parking b52s out on a tarmac in designated spots with nuclear weapons on board and pilots in a nearby facility where they can run to their airplanes like we have snreent old strategic command films, i suspect we won't get that far. but i do think the intent is clearly one to make sure our forces are capable, and to send a message. it's about deterrence. we have got capability and a president that's willing to use it if it's necessary. and that's what message we want to send lot and clear to china in particular, and also north korea. and the president's visit to the far east which is coming up in a couple of weeks. lou: i saw that movie "strategic command." james stuart

lou: joining us tonight is general jack keane, former four star general. general, great to see you. we are approaching the beginning of president trump's trip, very important trip to asia. and china has to be seen as the fulcrum of everything he's going to be talking about, whether it's trade or our national security and north korea. do you agree? and what do you anticipate will be the focus and the policy result that he seeks from this critically important trip? >> it is an important trip. and obviously just the fact the secretary of defense is there, secretary of state is on his way. we have three aircraft carriers in the pacific. they haven't done that in over 10 years. this an all-in. what hangs over this meeting which i think would be different if we did not have the north korean crisis. but clearly the central issue will be the north korean crisis and the commitment president xi made to our president going back to the mar-a-lago visit the day after we retaliated against the strike assad made against his own people when he said i will assist in denuclearizing north korea. that'

joining us right now fox news military analysis general jack keane, always a pleasure. your thoughts on latest provocation? >> well, i think it's part of a theme that certainly the north koreans are exercising, you know, we are in the tenth month of president trump doing something that his predecessors really did not do and seriously put military option back on the table and, you know, when you look at this, maria, big power competition is fundamentally a test of wills, we saw that with roosevelt and truman in world war ii and john kennedy during missile cuban crisis and also we saw with reagan and the soviet union and we have it here. and so this is definitely a crisis. i don't think for a minute that north korea despite those words that they are using would initiate a nuclear attack on the united states at this time, that would result in destruction of the regime, but they're clearly using rhetoric to get the united states to stand down, back away from what it's doing and they have to be having some concerns about what is our true main effort, military option is on th

fox's military analyst general jack keane. let's get to this and transition what we learn about niger. three carrier groups. what do you read into that as a military man? >> two carrier groups is unusual. three is very, very unusual. it certainly even with a presidential visit we don't normally do something like that. it doesn't mean we're going to go to war. what it does mean is i think in my judgment just thinking about it, it is part of the overall strategy dealing with north korea. to isolate north korea and apply maximum pressure. putting the military option on the table. the main effort is to use diplomacy to cut off all trade with north korea with countries -- 20-plus countries. that's happening. they use china as a lever against north korea and that's happening. also to keep convincing them that the military option is not rhetoric as it was during the obama administration. that it is absolutely a real serious option that the united states will pursue. so i look at it as part of the deterrents that the military option i

general jack keane says up to 50% are not ready. >> most americans don't know that. for the navy, half of their planes cannot fly because of mechanical reasons. another example. we've had two tragic accidents, almost two destroyers now being repaired. it turns out some of those sailors on the ships were working 100 hours a week. they were deployed so often they never got the training they were supposed to get. those ships are out of certification because they are always on guard trying to protect us against north korea. so we need to repair, but we also need to grow because the threats are not shrinking. unfortunately we have shrunk our military too much. maria: you make a lot of important points. let me ask you about north korea before you go. the october 10th day floating out there that kim jong un's regime wants to do something in terms of rockets being sent at what is the answer to the north korean threat is clearly become much more dangerous? >> the number one answer is we need more missile defense right now to protect ourselves and our allies. we also need more

maria: joining me right now general jack keane, good to see you this morning. thanks so much for being here. >> good morning, maria. maria: your thoughts on this debate? jack: first of all, we should be having a debate, the operation was designed for afghanistan and also for iraq, 2001 and 2002 respect i -- respectively. the current authorization gives the president wide latitude to use forces as necessary. i think that actually is good guidance. others, want to restrict it in terms of the scope, in terms of numbers of forces, where they should operate geographically and put a sunset clause or time constraint, that's the basic disagreement. others think it's too limiting and others think that the current authorization is not restrictive enough. i don't think they are going to get agreement this time either. maria: did the niger attack tell us anything in this regard? jack: i think we get things sometimes confused. giving the president authorities to provide operations against radical islamic organizations that are spreading worldwide is one thing and you contro

general jack keane is on now. he is the next right after this. charles: a visit to north korea over the weekend. defense secretary james mattis says north korea nuclear attack is accelerating. jenin is not general jack king, former vice chair of staff to the u.s. army in military analyst. you agree with the assessment. >> i don't know the facts as he does because director pompeo said a week ago that this north korean threat indeed with getting much closer. secretary matt escape those briefings on a regular basis. let's just take them at face value. i think what they are trying to tell us is that what kim jong un has done all along, he is trying to accelerate the miniaturization of nuclear weapons that you put him on an intercontinental ballistic missile that could reach the united states and get that done before the sanctions really start collapsing the regime. he believes in his mind, charles, once he has that capability as opposed to hacking then. because we expected nuclear bombs going back to 2005 when his father had developed the capability.
