it's another long and dangerous night in southern california. this is a live look now from our nbc chopper. the biggest of the four fires. the thomas fire, racing through ventura county. this is about 35 miles south of santa barbara. like we saw in the north bay this is dangerous not only for the thousands of families evacuating but also the fire crew. >> as we mentioned one of the cities on edge and in danger tonight is the actual city of ventura within ventura county. jay gray joins us live from there. and what is the situation now? >> reporter: yeah with, jess, raj, i think jess you put it perfectly the city is on edge. most of the electricity is off obviously many of the people evacuated. you can see the orange glow over my shoulder. firefighters kinning their work. but acknowledging they're still a long way from any type of containment. as the sun struggles to break through the smoke at sunrise firefighters continue their struggle along the front sfwliens we have extremely high winds, very railroad low relative humidity. and the fuel condit

huge wildfires in southern california have already destroyed at least 150 homes. that number will rise once the fires are under control. 150,000 people have already been ordered to evacuate. kenneth craig joins us live from ventura county with more on the evacuations and the challenges that fire crews are facing this morning. kenneth. >> reporter: well, good morning to you, kenny. this is a look at the kind of devastation residents in this area are waking up to this morning, there million-dollar home burned to the ground really the only thing left standing is that car frame. >>> reporter: three massive fires continue to burn out of control in southern california alongside some smaller ones amid reports hundreds of homes have been destroyed some residents spending the twilight hours dousing their roofs with water hoping that would combat flying embers. at least 150,000 residents have evacuated. >> all of a sudden i see from the other side fire came to our side. so scary. >> reporter: animals also had to be moved on short notice. kcbs reporter kristine lazar was at

the national weather service issuing a purple flag warning for most of southern california. now that means there is an extreme threat. and that means that if a fire starts in that area, it will burn extremely fast and will be uncontrollable. nbc's jada kim is live in ventura where that fire is burning and with the conditions that we have, this looks like it won't get better any time soon. >> reporter: no marcus, we have the same conditions we had back on monday when all of this started. we have that triple threat factor of the extremely high 80 mile per hour gusts added to that. we have single digit humidity as well as temperatures that could get in the 80s down here in southern california today. that has evacuation numbers way up and many people in ventura and l.a. county have been told, get ready to pack up and leave. throughout southern california, the highest possible wild fire danger level was issued for the first time. the purple flag. fire officials said they haven't seen this combination of fierce winds and extreme dry conditions in decades. >> the brush burning inde

and we begin tonight with abc's matt gutman here in southern california. >> reporter: tonight, southern california is exploding like a tinderbox. new fires breaking out from san diego county, where some 20 structures are destroyed, to malibu. firefighters pouncing on flareups there. the thomas fire, raging across ventura county, barrelling into the town of la conchita this morning. firefighters battling a blizzard of ambers and ash. you can see inside this ridge, this fire is just engulfing both sides of the canyon here. we watched the fire line leap down this mountain. these helicopters are dropping as much water as they possibly can on these fields. the idea is to stop the fire from getting from this charred part of the mountain down there to those avocado fields, and the homes below. and just yards away, we found anthony and lenay bavero, sprinting back to their home. it was a scramble repeated thousands of times in california this week. lenay ripping pictures off the walls of her children's rooms, grabbing items by the drawer-full. and willing to accept any help in the dash to flee.

that also causing problems in southern california. they have a red flag warning because they are so dry. very high winds and very low humidity. if you take a look at that time- stamp. this is what they're expecting until early friday morning. it will not expire until midnight on friday. it is very widespread from ventura county all the way down to san diego with, again, the wind gusts reaching 50 to 60 miles per hour in the overnight hours and early morning hours. if we get into the ventura county area and the santa paula area where we have the fire burning here, you can see with the off shore winds, coming from this direction, moving out towards areas like ventura, that's why they're concerned about the areas. here is a look at the conditions out there. we track three things when it comes to the weather and the fire. the temperature in the low 60s already at this hour. the relative humidity is low. 10% in most areas out there. the winds gusting to 50 miles per hour reported in and around camarillo. of the hills could definitely be se

in southern california. extreme high winds are forecasted for today and could last through early tomorrow. the la county fire is about 5% contained. it is spreading into neighborhoods in bel air who have not experienced a major fire since 1961 where 500 homes were burned. right now for homes have been destroyed and damaging 11 others. >>> this other fire has destroyed about 2500 homes. >> police say it may take until [ inaudible ] to contain the fire. >> the thomas fire is about 5% contained. at least 150 homes and buildings and 15 -- 15,000 other coatings are in the fires path. our reporter has more details from the site. >> reporter: if you take a look , you can see smoke and flames coming from the hillside right behind us. there are roughly 60 homes in this area. all of these people are under mandatory evacuation overnight. all day firefighters have been working hard to try to stop this fire from reaching the homes. the firefighters were able to say five homes along the ridge line. we spoke to one man who

not so much for the southern california smoke. we are seeing some of that. most of it's more about just the stable environment and the wood-burning and even car pollution that we get going during the day. skies will look like that tomorrow morning. that's kind of the story. i think we'll see lots of mid- 60s with temperatures in the south bay maybe a smidge warmer especially gilroy and morgan hill where you see some upper 60s heading south into san benito county. a real nice weekend ahead. sunday we'll talk about in a little bit but it looks okay. the thing to note will be the morning overnight lows chilly in the morning hours on saturday, sunday and beyond as we are seeing frost and freezing conditions especially in the north bay. so just a steady as she goes forecast. the downside for southern california with this pattern is they are continuing to get offshore winds through through sunday afternoon and then it dies off. it's not crazy out of control winds like it had been but still not helping firefighters. >> what are they looking at tonight? >> it's goin

we're going to have an update on the other fires burning in southern california coming up in about four minutes from right now. >>> we're learning more tonight about the driver of that charter bus that crashed on 101 last night in san francisco. tonight we've talked with the company that operates that bus. nbc bay area's sergio quintana live at san francisco general hospital where most of the victims were taken. sergio. >> reporter: and tonight there are still two patients that are here in fair condition. of course all of them were headed to a holiday party last night, but they didn't make it because their bus crashed. in cell phone video that was shared with us by a viewer, you can see one passenger climbs out of the bus all dressed up for a holiday party. they were headed to the crown plaza hotel in palo alto, but their bus careened out of control and onto its side on isn't 101. i talked by phone with avi joseph. the oakland bus company that operates the bus. he says the driver was not speeding. "we have gps on our vehicles, so from what we can tell the bus was going at legal speeds."
