steve: you teach now in wisconsin but you grew up in san francisco? prof. markwyn: i grew up in santa rosa, just north of san francisco. steve: i want to go back to something earlier you said. the fire of 1906, i know this isn't a direct part of your research, but how devastating was that for the city, and how did the city rebuild that led to the 1915 expo? prof. markwyn: it was devastating for the city. it was unprecedented for the city. they had had earlier fires, but this was an enormous dispossession of land, of houses. the loss of life is still under contention. people don't agree on how many lives were actually lost in the earthquake, but the city rebuilt itself, and with a great deal of -- some residents left and never came back. particularly in the african-american community, there weren't a lot of african americans. many of them ended up staying there and not going back to san francisco. there was an effort to move china after the fire because chinatown was a prime downtown location in san francisco, and as real estate increased in value, san franc

wisconsin. i think the interesting element here is how split wisconsin has been party wise, demographically. kind of on both sides of the polls here. you also have a humge governor' race. scott walker is running again. why the republican party plays in that state, why the president played in that state is scott walker's organization after election victory after election victory is very real, extremely proficient and almost roundly successful over the last couple years. that's a key senate race and obviously key governor's race to watch. then minnesota, you know that state better than anybody else. it was one of those interesting elements, you talk about the president's success with endorsements. tim pawlenty, former governor, well-known state recognition with name i.d., he lost to jeff johnson. i think the expectation of the republican party was tim pawlenty would have a good shot to win the governor's mansion. he got wiped out. not only did he say negative things about president trump, left his
