favorite to win his reelection campaign, as is jennifer what extent, who is looking to unseat barbara comstock. most independent handicappers have her winning that race. host: i was talking to sean sullivan of the washington post, but i want to go back to some numbers that the cook political report has been looking at. there are 75 competitive races, 70 are republican seats, five are democratic seat. field, it is a massive especially when you have gerrymandered districts and the battlefields have gotten bigger and that is certainly helping the democrats. there are roughly, the magic number is 23 in the house. really, if you look at some of these open seats, there are about 10-11 seats that are almost definitely going to be going to the democrats. the magic number really is not 23. i think it is more maybe 13, 14 if you assume that those democrats are going to win these seats. i just think it is going to be very difficult for republicans to keep control of the house. privately, a lot of them are nervous and are saying, we're probably going to lose it, it is just a matter of how much we lose it

she beats the incumbent republican barbara comstock. this is a big win for the democrats and as a result, the democrats now need 22 republican seats. they need 22 republican seats. it's gone down from 23 in order to get the majority, jake, in the house of representatives. assuming they don't lose any of their own seats. >> well, this is not a surprise. this is a good pickup for the democrats. it's not a surprise. this is the heart of the resistance. northern virginia. hillary clinton won this district two years ago. barbara comstock was able, she's a skilled politician, she was able to still win in 2016, but this time, she had a very able opponent, soon to be congresswoman-elect jennifer wexton who labeled her instead of barbara comstock, barbara trumpstock and pointed out even if she every now and then distanced herself from president trump, she voted with president trump. this is not a surprise, but it is one, it's the first big pickup for the democrats. >> what does it say about potential other pickups? >> it shows that donald trump,

among the republican incumbents who lost, dave brat and barbara comstock in virginia. illinois congressman -- in the senate, republicans actually added to their majority. red state democrats like joe donnelly, heidi heitkamp and claire mccaskill all lost while republicans like ted cruz held their seats. governor races, democrats gained ground in states like wisconsin where incumbent lost to tony evers. republicans held onto the biggest prizes, including florida and ohio. no matter how you interpret tuesday's results, one thing is clear, there will be lots of new younger faces in government come 2019 and a lot of them, i'm proud to say, are going to be the faces of women. as of right now the number of women who have won elections or reelections to congress is at at least 110. that's a new record. but even at this hour there's still a number of very important races yet to be decided. among them the florida senate race, considered too close to call with the republican rick scott leading the incumbent. democrat bill nelson, by less than half a percentage point. that is tig

with that in mind, we have seen the democrats have claimed one seat held by a republican, the comstock seat in the 10th. talk about that seat and why jennifer waexton was successful. nathan: i find this result is fascinating in a couple of different ways. it should not have been a surprise, because most of the polling, the democratic and nonpartisan polling coming into the race showed wexton leading. what was interesting is that republican polling consistently showed the congresswoman either tied or narrowly ahead. because of that, republicans continue to spend money in the race. he spent over $5 million trying to defend the congresswoman the district is covered by the washington, d.c. media market. thatwas the bare minimum democrats needed out of virginia. they still have three more opportunities to pick up seats. fifth, second, and seventh. those will be more difficult. those are districts president trump caromed -- carried narrowly. we will see if democrats can add on to the plus one they already have in virginia. susan: we will be talking about the competitive house races for you i
