bakari, why is this becoming such an important issue for mayor pete buttigieg now? >> well, i think first and foremost, he's becoming a serious contender. i think every poll you see he's in the top tier. people are starting to comb his record ask see what he was for and how he did as mayor of south bend. this is a very fair issue. i think all the candidates, whether or not it's kamala harris as district attorney and attorney general or whether or not it's amy klobuchar when she was a prosecutor as well are going to have to reconcile their records and their issues on race in today's climate. and so mayor buttigieg is going to have to respond to these questions about the firing of the police chief. he's going to have to respond to any questions about race that simmer up from south bend. but if i did have one piece of advice for the campaign, it would also be that the mayor should tout some of the things he did positively for people of color in south bend, if there are any. i'm sure there are. he should do that. he should also be proactive about laying out policy for a

randomly mayor pete. even they are surprised at how much they are really liking this human who was relatively unknown to the national stage until a few weeks ago but has really sort of taken off. i think just to the way he speaks had refreshing to a lot of people because it doesn't seem inauthentic or political calculus behind it. it seems like he's having a conversation, intellectual discussion with someone bouncing ideas back and forth. that doesn't mean he will always get it right but he's authentic in the way he's a critical thinker and that's a strong contrast to what a lot of people experienced lately. >> and the contrast thing is very, very important. the democratic party has a long tradition of embracing youthful, energetic, incredibly smart leaders who could take the part r party in any direction. the contrast with trump is perfect. >> super. >> road scholar, served in the military, clearly devout christian. there are just so many -- >> et cetera, et cetera. >> layer upon layer of things. >> okay

though i think what pete buttigieg does is different. it's what jimmy carter did, what bill clinton did, what barack obama did in his first term. they won by capturing a sizable percentage of the white evangelical vote. democrats have basically ceded that vote in the last two president yale election and i know a lot of democrats are privately worried about. the more the parties go to their ideological poles, the smaller they get, and it's hard to see how somebody like pete buj jay doesn't appeal to some disaffected conservatives, especially if -- >> so mike pence weighed in on this last night. take a look at what he had to say. >> we had a agree working relationship. and he knows better. he knows me. i get it, you know. they've got 19 people running for president on that side. >> what do you make of what the vice president had to say there? do you think buttigieg criticized pence's faith? >> i think that's thousand the religious right is portraying it. i think that's how a lot of people on the right are portraying it. i think what pete b

a lot of buzz around pete buttigieg. the "l.a. times" recently calling him the hottest thing in politics. how significant is this ride at third place at this stage of the race? >> it's measurable. there's potential for mayor pete fever to break out in the democratic primary. however, i always caution people about polls. they are simply a snapshot of the time. depending on who is asking the question, how it's being asked and when determines the response you get. i commend pete because he was quite frankly a not known candidate up to this point. now he's making headway and that's a prime example of what happens when you're able to effectively communicate a message that resonates with people. >> you're watching this. how do you explain his rise? >> well, you know, i agree. he's an appealing candidate. he speaks very well. mayor pete is very articulate. there's lightning in the bottle for the lgbtq community. we saw that in the mid-terms. there's a surge of lgbtq candidates that have been elected nationwide and now we just saw the may

pete, i know you were at the arguments today. can you walk through why this case is potentially such a big deal and give us a sense of where you think the court is headed? >> reporter: sure. it is a big deal for a number of reasons, number one, it is one of the few things the constitution says the government has to do. every ten years do actual ee numer agency. figure out how many people live here. results are used to determine how many seats in the house of representatives each state gets, and they also determine how much money states get from federal programs like highway construction, medicaid and so on. so there's a lot at stake. part of the issue is that the government and opponents here concede that every time you add another question to the census form that goes to every u.s. household, you run a risk that people will stop responding or won't answer the question. both sides here concede that if you add a citizenship question to the census, it will probably reduce the response rate. now, the states say that makes the census
