sanders and elizabeth warren tied for second. senator kamala harris closely trailing them for third place. so to break down those poll numbers for us and what they could mean heading into the next democratic faceoff, let's bring in nbc national political correspondent steve kornacki who is live for us here at the interactive board. steve, i know that this poll really broke down those different results regionally, but when we look at the big picture nationwide, what does it tell us? >> i think a couple of things, morgan. number one, it shows joe biden is still the leader in this democratic race. but 25% in our new national poll. nine-point advantage. remember when biden got in this race just a couple months ago, we saw polls with him in the high 30s, even into the low 40s heading into that debate just a couple weeks ago on nbc. he was in the 30s. the so this is on the lower end of where we've seen biden as a presidential candidate. it potentially indicates vulnerability heading into that second deb yatd and raises the question wou

sanders, joe biden the only two that have ever had that experience before. the format was tough, you get ten people on stage, but the reality, joe, is that there is, as you know, in every presidential campaign within a primary process, a nominating process, there is always the poll of the party base. so you're dealing if you are a republican with the poll of the -- to the right of the party base, if you are in the democratic party you're dealing with the pull of the left and what happens in every cycle is candidates get pulled a little bit out of the candidate that ends up being the nominee gets pulled in a direction they don't want to be pulled and they have to pivot back and recalibrate towards the center when they run in the general election. the question in the democratic party in 2020 is whether the center of gravity has moved far enough to the left that it will pull these candidates in a permanent way or in a way so far to the -- in the progressive direction that it will be impossible for them to pivot back. although it's true what you just said about

i don't count out bernie sanders at all. he has a lot of resources to go the distance and he has very strong support. that support seems to be falling in iowa, but it can go the distance a long time as well. >> gene, this variance in the poll in the "washington post" poll, is the one that varies the most with the other polls. that's the kind of thing that will shake itself out overtime. when we get past the next round of debates, we will probably have more clarity in the polls by then. >> yeah. we probably will. the polls will be all over the map and they are snapshots and that's why a lot of analysts sort of average the polls and try to get a sense of where the race is from that. i think the real take away is the rise of warren and especially the rise of harris into that -- firmly into that top tier. they were not necessarily firmly there before the debate, but they are definitely there now. they will be factors in this race. >> let me just say quickly, i think kamala harris' growth in iowa, early on in this race, a lot of

four candidates are in iowa, including senator bernie sanders. in the latest nbc news survey monkey poll, joe biden is on top. sanders and senator warren tied for second with 16%. warren and sanders will be on the debate stage together for the first time tuesday july 30th. night two, kamala harris and joe biden face off again. joining me, mike memoli. what have you been seeing in iowa? >> reporter: what we have been seeing this people is one of the more robust back and forth between the top candidates over policy, specifically over health care. it started earlier this week, former vice president joe biden was here, talking about his vision for improving on the affordable care act, telling voters it was a heavy lift to get it passed in the first place. the candidates shouldn't talk about starting from scratch and tearing it down for a medicare style plan, saying it would be too expensive. his plan is more affordable and builds on success of the affordable care act. bernie sanders is engaging in that debate as well, talking about medicare for all.
