senator sanders is not new to this. i want the american people to understand that you will know a tree by the fruit that it bears, not just folks who come into this epiphany because they're running for president but somebody who's been on the justice journey for a long time and also who will nautica pit late, who has an anti-endorsement list. has a list of multimillion beai and billionaires -- he was polling in 2016 as the candidate that could go head-to-head with donald trump and defeat him and that's still the case. and he brings an energy, chuck. it's about who brings the energy and senator sanders brings that heat. >> i know it was very important to senator sanders to contrast himself with vice president biden the last debate. he doesn't get that opportunity this time. is that something that you feel like he can still do or is it much harder when that candidate isn't on stage? >> i mean his vision for this country is the contrast. i mean you have in the vice president who stood up before million tie millionaires and

it's not as if most warren voters put sanders as second choice and vice-versa. a lot of second voters have biden as second choice and warren voters have harris as second choice. her voters tend to be more college educated, more super attuned to politics and the news. they don't really gain very much by knocking each other out. right? it's not as if bernie were to drop out tomorrow, not as if his voters would automatically gravitate to harris. i would be surprised to see them going at each other. >> there is an argument warren in this steady rise has done more damage to buttigieg stuck there in single digits. he has similar demographic appeal. in terms of the democratic race right now, they have biden out in front by about 20 points. this breakdown by race among white voters, biden in place comfortably. look at that. among african-american voters, 1 out of 4 votes next year will come from black voters in the democratic primaries. joe biden is lapping the field a couple of times. >> long history with the party african-americans have had and his relationship with b

first, you have to look at what warren and sanders do. do they square off or do they kind of have this truce that's been going on? i would like to see them go at it a little but they are very much aligned and you can see them waiting until the september debates when the field's halved. beto and mayor pete have to make some statements tonight. they kind of both leveled off to 5% or less and with mayor pete really winning the money race of last quarter, $24 million, you would have thought he would have been better in the polls. then you have an outsider. you have like tim ryan or amy klobuchar who are moderates, this could be a breakout night for them. liz: well, klobuchar did pretty well in the last time and people seem to connect with some of the things she said. what is your reaction to senator warren's trade plan and is it viable in this day and age? >> you know, i think for where she ois on the spectrum, it's pretty nationalist. it wraps everything in. you have the green new deal umbrella with climate and labor, you have obviously the

bernie sanders and elizabeth warren. sanders trailing warren in the polls but both campaigns say they're planning on keeping things cordial. they'll face off against, among others, representatives from the party's center. the center right, including former colorado governor john hickenlooper and millionaire, former congressman john delaney. both men have made criticism of the party's, quote, democratic socialist flank, a key part of their campaigns. of course, the elephant not in the room will be joe biden. the former vice president who debates tomorrow night has regained nearly all of the ground he lost after his rocky performance in the first debate. it's going to be incumbent upon the other candidates to justify why they should be the first choice for primary voters eager to defeat president trump. and this is particularly true for candidates like sanders and warren who are decidedly to biden's left. so our big question today is, which version of the democratic party will prevail in tonight's debate? joining me now, n
