the one i'm reading right now is the new book on the history of the vietnam war from 1945 to 1975. it is terrific. i'm not yet finished with it, but i'm getting close and it is just gripping. a lot of it is also pulled from the vietnamese plaintiffs view of what it was like on the other side during this horrific war. very critical both of communist tactics as well as american and french tactics during this period in the war but it is terrific history. if people want to understand what happened, this is the one volume to read. it's just a great book and brilliantly written, necessary history if you are a history buff at all. this is a book called field of blood by joanne friedman, and it's actually a history of violence in the country here in the united states congress. she does a great job of pointing out the famous incident of beating charles sumner and a sort of often cited incidents of violence as she points out there's a long history and she tells the story through the memoirs and notes of the clerk of the house who will realized a lot of what happened. there were groups with v
