several feet of snow expected to fall in the sierra this week. right now chain controls are in place on i 80 d ghway 50. traffic has been backed up all day on i 80 because of so many crashes in the snow. 80 was shut down in both directions near truckee. in the last 20 minutes all the lanes reopened still traffic remains low. dryer ski resorts in tahoe are happy to see the fresh snow and many resorts will open for the season this week. heavenly mountain is scheduled to open tomorrow. the ski resort said staff has been working nonstop to clear lift lines and to get it ready for visitors. >> we are excited for opening day. a lot of people are already up here and we are looking for an to celebrating with them. we are starting off with hot chocolate and donuts. there will be live music and we are looking forward to it. it will be a fun day. >>> kirkland and norstar ski resorts say they plan to open the day after thanksgiving. >>> let's bring in chief meteorologist bill martin now. snow up in the sierra and a lot of rain. >> and a lot of wind. it will

snow level in the sierra nevada is going to retreat to higher and higher elevations. that means a lot of this rainfall in the mid levels of the sierra is actually going to wash away. one of the snow that we actually accumulated earlier on in your earlier this past week. rainfall is going to continue on into monday after that tuesday will continue to bring some areas of rain. we'll get a brief break on wednesday before what looks very likely to be another rainmaker come from friday of next week. we went from such a dry start to the season hour just system after system impacting the bay area so quite the busy forecast ahead of us. now winter storm watches are issued again ahead of the weekend rain and snowfall for the sierra nevada. this is for the greater lake tahoe area up in the sierra from saturday on into monday. we could see up to 16 inches of snow at lake level and one to 3 feet above 7,000 feet travel delays up in lake tahoe area and that includes 80 with that new storm that's moving in this weekend as for today though we're nice and dry a good day to travel up

that means a lot of snow and mid levels of the sierra nevada is just going to be washed down slope by all the rain we're going to be seeing. rain arrives saturday afternoon takes us through sunday, that's why sunday. you do want to give yourself that extra time to get home from work as conditions are going to be very wet in potentially slick on the roadways. the good news about rainfall higher elevations routes like the grapevine and some of our bay area passes going to be a lot less prone to have ice formations so should be a smooth a ride in that regard. it's just going to be very wet. rainfall continues on into monday even into tuesday before we dry out wednesday and thursday and then that 3rd system that i darya and james isis on into the coming weekend next friday of 7 days away from now, looking very likely that another well developed system is going to push in a lot like the one we're about to see just going to result in prolonged rainfall. but we do have enough snow in the sierra to be talking about winter storm watches yet again taking effect tomorrow, lasting through monday,

some blizzard conditions expected across the sierra nevada winds gusting there over 65 maybe 70 miles per hour. but look at that rain coming down in the bay area's we take for a closer look. you can see some of those showers popping up some heavier bands now making their way into parts of the south bay they will get some downpours are really taking the better part of the day to get the rain in that direction otherwise the showers continuing across san francisco stretching into union city parts of the east bay too and then the main cold front is actually just beginning to move into the north bay where they've seen the most significant rainfall so far some of those are rain totals upwards of a half an inch of rain so far and there's plenty more to come. in fact there is some concern tonight and some of the north bay that we're looking at the possibility of some flash flooding. so some advisories have been posted in those areas and the north bay specially in and around the contained fire of the burn areas not able hold out water there's just not the root systems from up last there so cer
