it happened about 10 clock this afternoon at the mark bay school in san rafael. it is a private k-8 school. now, a letter from the head of school describes a tragic accident and a child being fatally injured. according to the school, staffers were close by and they witnessed what happened and immediately called 911 and provided aid. however, the boy died. a statement from mark bay school says in part, we don't have full details yet about how this occurred, but we are working with authorities to investigate the safety of our students is so important to all of us and we want to understand how this could have happened. a section of the campus where this occurred will be completely closed off. now, tomorrow, scheduled to be a half day for students before the start of the holiday break. we are told that there will be counselors on campus for students and staff who need support. can? >> thank you for that. to our other top story. a sudden end to one of the highest profile murder trials in recent san mateo county history. tiffany lee and cause a buyout where the accused

but also seeing the rain returning to san rafael. parts of marin county where we had about half an inch of rain this morning. along with that hail that came down fairly quickly. and then that may intensify as it continues to move across southern sonoma county and toward napa county and approaching fairfield around 4:00 to 5:00. so that is something we'll be watching. and then some of the rain near the coastline will start to push to the south as that other surge of that last little bit of the storm pushes off across the bay area. and then looking at our travel conditions, if you'll be heading out today or maybe even tomorrow, there are some very warm air for the eastern half of the country. look at chicago. that is 60 degrees for the high temperature today. i know that is really crazy that they're seeing weather that warm off toward the east. but there will be cooler air headed that way. looking at the travel forecast, the travel delays are right here in california from sfo to l.a.x. so it is a 30 to 40-minute delay. if you're going

. >>> taking a live look at the richmond san rafael bridge. state lawmakers want to know how you want it rebuilt. since 1956, the richmond san rafael bridge has been a connection between the east bay and the north bay. it survived the earthquake but experts say the cost of maintaining the bridge will soon be too high. the bridge has been seismically retrofitted and is considered safe in the event of earthquakes but concrete started falling from the upper deck earlier this year. state assemblyman mark levine is renewing a push for the public to share creative ideas for features to add to the bridge. >> comfortable knowing they can go over the bridge without things falling down on them and what not. that is all need. >> some of the suggestions include more lighting and express lane for buses or even a rail line for smart trains. about 100 people have submitted suggestions so far. >>> happening today, a smart train drill in marin county will happen on a southbound train that will suddenly lose power in the middle of san rafael. role players will

a young boy is dead after a playground accident at a private school in san rafael. the school says classes will be in session this morning. the accident happened yesterday on the playground at mark day school on trellis drive. the school says other students and staff witnessed the accident and tried to provide aid for the young boy. he died at a hospital. the school is working with police to investigate what happened ... and the section of campus where the accident happened has been closed off. mark day school released this statement saying ... "the death of someone so young is devastating for all of us, and even more so under these circumstances and at this time of year, when we are surrounded by celebrations while we mourn. all of us at mark day school express our deepest sympathies to his family, classmates and friends." there will be counselors on campus today for students who need support. rafael in the richmond- san rafael bridge inside pam pablo bay and to the east we have areas of vallejo and hercules. in the central bay it's mainly dry at the moment. in the inner east bay we have light rain falling on highway 24 from lafayette transitioning toward concord and then onto highway four in antioch, brentwood, pittsburg reporting some light rain. in the sierra we have an advisory for winter travel. snow levels expected to be around 6000 feet, 6500 feet and that will continue through the next few days. that system you can see, a plume of moisture that has drawn all the way back toward the hawaiian islands will bring us the on and off rain for the next couple of days. the winter weather advisory goes until early sunday morning so it will be very treacherous at times and snow levels are expected to drop by saturday night. here's a look at an advisory at home. high surf advisory until early tomorrow morning with swells from 12-14 feet and breakers could reach 22 feet that could equal some coastal flooding and the possibility of rip currents and sneaker waves. we will have a loo
