dana? >> ryan nobles, thank you very much. >>> now let's check in with joe biden's campaign. >> reporter: joe biden is hoping for a top two finish in nevada and said that coming in first or second place would be a win for him and the biden cam plain believes this would be a start of a turn-around for joe biden's campaign after the disappointing losses in both iowa and new hampshire. they believe the diverse demographics in the state could be beneficial to them. biden recently picked up the support of a latino victory fund and he has also spent a substantial amount of time over the last week courting black voters here in the state. now, biden is also hoping to pick up support from the union community. in fact, he has been making some private back of house visits at casinos, here, trying to connect one-on-one with workers that he hopes will turn out to caucus for him today. the biden campaign is very aware of he needs a strong finish here in the state. after this con test, the race will head

>> that's right, dana. this is kind of an odd place for the bernie sanders campaign to be in this democratic primary process. basically every contest up until now they've been planning for a victory party on a night like tonight. and that's not the posture they have at this point. you can bet when bernie sanders appears behind me in a couple hours they're going to be looking to the future. the goal from the beginning in south carolina was to minimize the momentum of joe biden as much as possible. and as a result they didn't pour a lot of resources in the state. they spent close to a million dollars on ads. sanders spent quite a bit of time in south carolina especially in the closing days of the campaign when you saw the polls start to tighten. sanders responded by spring lg in visits to south carolina in addition to visiting the super tuesday states of virginia, massachusetts, and beyond. it'll be interesting to see how the sanders campaign responds. they knew it was going to be an uphill climb from the beg

so, so, dana, 62% and we have to keep emphasizing that as john said, that map, the colors could change as well as fill in. so, you know, we have a lot we don't yet know. but when he shows, you look at pete buttigieg, as you heard the mayor say, himself, if that's a marginal exaggeration or not, pretty much in line with where he was a year ago. here he is making inroads as john points out in progressive and moderate parts of the tate. >> no question, you have to take a step back and give him his due. he has bragging rights that we should, you know, give him. the fact that he was nobody from -- i'm not saying south bend is nowhere, but it's the middle of the country, it is a very small town, certainly compared to where the other candidates who he is competing against are from, name-brand candidates including, and especially, two-term vice president of the united states, you know, who was the guy at the top of the ticket, barack obama, was incredibly popular in the state of iowa. not only did he make his name in the caucuses by beating hillary clinton, he also won in the general election

and to dana's point, does bernie sanders need to win either of those states? perhaps not if he's building up this impenetrable delegate league. if he wins in california, it would be for bragging rights and to diminish the ability for someone else like klobuchar or warren to be able to claim a flat-out victory and have momentum to move forward. >> and then bloomberg is the question mark, dana, since he's not on the ballot in south carolina. since he has infused super tuesday with all of his cash, just what that's going to do on tuesday. >> well, that's sort of goes to the first question, the first topic we were talking about here which is joe biden. and it is an unknown. as big a presence as bloomberg has been in this campaign for the past month or so, it is a good reminder that he hasn't actually had to be on a ballot and prove his meddle when it comes to getting votes. and so that is going to be a question for him. but again, a question if -- assuming that he is staying in this and he's going to keep using his millions and billions to do that, whether or not

joining me now, cnn chief political correspondent dana bash and former obama campaign manager jim messina. a win is a win, no question for bernie sanders, but the results are likely tighter than the sanders team had thought or wanted. what does this mean for him going forward and also then buttigieg? >> first of all on bernie sanders, yeah, of course it was closer than he would have wanted, especially given the fact that on the moderate side of the ledger, so to speak, it was split. i mean if there were no amy klobuchar, i can just tell you anecdotally and also looking at the exit polls, a lot of her votes would have gone to pete buttigieg and he would have won. that's just kind of a fact of basic math. but a win is a win. and more importantly, just like pete buttigieg, bernie sanders has staying power. he has people who are his supporters and they don't want to go anywhere. in the states to come he's got money, he has infrastructure, he has a movement behind him. those are no small things as jim messina, who kind of was behind and a part of a movement way back when will tell you. but pet

dana, thank you. great reporting. appreciate it. >>> let's talk about this with someone in the room, democratic congressman raja krishnamoorthii get that. i know our reporting on this. so what can you share with me about how you saw meeting go down? >> i can't comment on the specifics of the briefing, but i can say is that unfortunately i think folks on the other side still have not internalized some of the conclusions from 2016. namely that the russians interfered in that election on the president's behalf, and ever since then members of the -- members of the intelligence community have uniformly said that the russians are planning to interfere in our 2020 elections. i think they're under a lot of pressure from their president to somehow change the narrative about 2016 and also to say the russians may not be interfering in the current elections. that's a big problem because we have to prevent them from doing so. >> okay. >> i understand you can't share any of the classified information with us. but you can shed light

dana, great to see you. so this does look like two trains speeding towards each other on the same track. what's the final scene? >> almost, except what's really interesting is that bloomberg has been able through the shear force of his fundraising, i mean, his payments for all of these ads that now he is in the top 2 in national polls. so he has tried to make this a person two person race and pushed biden, pete buttigieg and off to the side. the reason to believe it doesn't work for this week's purposes bloomberg isn't even on the ballot in nevada. and his team had some nerve today but, you got to hand it to them, he basically said that bernie sanders is so dangerous that everybody else, biden, buttigieg, warren, klobuchar should drop out now because bloomberg, he says, is the only person that could possibly beat bernie. >> tucker: so when does the rest of the democratic establishment, you know, wall street, tech people, the morning show hosts on msnbc, when do they all swing in behind mike bloomberg against
