it used to say the seattle police department and now it says the seattle people department. and all the windows are boarded up because the officers who work at this station essentially abandoned ship. let me explain how this came about. you had several days of violent clashes between police and protesters in front of this station, and there was tear gas deployed. it was a terrible situation. and officers within the department made the calculated decision they wanted to try to deescalate things. so they decided to pack up and leave. and when that happened you had a void and protesters filled that void. and that's what you've had since monday. now, despite the fact that this all gun violently, right now it's entirely peaceful. in fact, you can see these protesters behind me. in fact, let's pan the camera around. it really has the feel of a street festival. they're serving food down there. they're giving out free food. there's medical tents. people are hanging out. they have movies at night. there's live music. so that's what the situation is like now. but right now there appea

joining me now is seattle police chief carmen best, served in the seattle police department for nearly 30 years. police chief, thank you for joining us. i appreciate your time this morning. with everything that is happening in your city. can you talk to us about what you've learned regarding the shooting suspect, any motivation and have any charges been filed? >> well, the incident happened yesterday in the late afternoon, so we know that the suspect, as you mentioned, is in custody, and that the victim of the shooting is recovering at the hospital. what we can tell you is that the suspect who was in a black car drove straight into the crowd that was demonstrating and the capitol hill area of seattle, the crowd tried to stop the car as it was progressing steadily down the street. one person from the crowd was wrestling with the driver when the driver pulled out a gun and fired at least one round striking the person in the shoulder. so that occurred yesterday. we have that person in custody. the motive has yet to be found. we will try to figure out what prompted this very scary and trag
