meteorologist kari hall has been glued to her equipment, tracking this microclimate weather alert. kari, when will the wind die down? >> it's still pretty gusty out there, scott. although the high-wind warning has been allowed to expire, we are now seeing fires in the santa cruz mountains, as we get a look at what's going on here. some of our alert fire cameras picking up on these fires that have recently been sparked. there's not one but several of them in the santa cruz mountains. we'll continue to monitor this situation as we are still getting those high wind gusts across the bay area. some of those gusts reach over 90 miles per hour earlier this morning. so, this was the fear, that we could see some fire sparking across especially our upper elevations when those winds are just really roaring. we've had a lot of wind damage across the bay area. of course, as we go into the next several hours, very critical with this low humidity and also these high winds that do continue. we could possibly see some more fires developing. i'll continue to watch this as well as take a look ahead t

meteorologist kari hall is tracking that and the weekend forecast. we've been dying to get out for a little walk, kari. it's been rough. >> yeah. we can do that now that the sun has come back out. and we can see from our live camera from san jose, it's be a beautiful morning now. few lingering showers outside the sacramento valley, widening out the view to see what else is out there, the next storm is right there off our coast and will be moving in, starting in the north bay by tomorrow. so, as we look at how much rain we measured, this was huge. a lot of us got more rain with this one storm than we did all season long up to this point. and getting over 10 inches of rain at the santa cruz summit. morgan hill from this one storm reaching six inches of rain. fremont, redwood city, reacing over two inches of rain. we're seeing two inc san jose. oakley reaching over 2 inches of rain. so now that we are getting a chance to let all of that soak in, temperatures are still pretty cool. and we're going to only see it reach into the low 50s for today. we'll ta

kari hall has the forecast. >> good morning. and we're not seeing a lot of fog near the ground because we have a lot of clouds higher up and also rain just to the north of the bay area, we're still getting in on the spotty sprinkles up around uhe could i a. take a look at the big storm system out in the pacific. but a lot of the rain is staying to our north and that is what we're expecting the next several day. so as you head out, no need for the windshield wipers and you can leave the umbrella at home. in the east bay, temperatures starting out in the mid-40s. a mix of sun and clouds for today as our temperatures heat up and take a look at how nice it will be this afternoon as we reach into the mid-60s. and to about 65 degrees in morgan hill today, santa rosale weather in the forecast. any issues for the morning commute? >> no issues for the commute. there are a couple areas with overnight crashes but they have cleared out. so westbound 580 toward richmond bridge, you are looking at 7 minutes. le westbound 80 towards the bay br

it is a glorious day, nbc bay area's kari hall tracking some spring-like weather. it's january and i am just delighted. kari? >> i know, isn't this great? even though we've still seen some fog in parts of the north bay, i wanted to show you the current visibility where it lingers in napa, as well as in santa rosa. it's cleared out there, but novato visibility is improving as well so once the fog clears out all across the bay area, we'll see more scenes like this, what we're seeing in san francisco with a lot of sunshine right now. now as we go through the forecast, we are going to have near record high temperatures for today, and we are looking at some of those highs in the upper 60s, and when we look at the extended forecast, it does not change. we are heading into some spring-like weather, highs in the low 70s, as we go into the weekend, but there will be a cooldown as we head into early next week, but it is all dry in this forecast, and we'll talk about the impacts of drought, that's coming up in the next microclimate forecast. scott? >> all right, kari. >>> we

meteorologist kari hall is tracking just a gorgeous start to the weekend. >> yes. and we're going to see more weather like this, scott. this is that look in the south bay as we get a live view in san jose. i did want to show you what i am watching as we go into the weekend. as we're seeing some big waves crashing up along the coast, we just now had a high surf advisory go into effect. for the rest of the weekend, near record high temperatures. we're talking highs up to 70 degrees today. and then by sunday, especially sunday night, we'll be watching out for the potential of a high wind event. high surf advisory, we will see some of those breakers up to 20 feet and with weather this beautiful, i know that people along the coastline will want to go out there and enjoy some time at the beach but stay well away from the water. we could see some of those sneaker waves coming up and catching people off guard and that can sweep you out into the ocean. you'll really want to be careful with that as well as temperatures that we're seeing inland, reaching into the 70s, especia

as kari hall mentioned, it is coming in strong and fast. >> and all this hour we have live coverage. we'll check in with kris sanchez and pete later to see how burn zones are preparing. first "today in the bay's" bob redell kicks off our coverage in danville, that's where the storm and the impact on outdoor dining which is just restarting. bob? >> reporter: good morning to you. we've actually moved to downtown pleasanton, one restaurant owner tells us they don't know if they could have gone a couple of more months if the outdoor dining that you see behind me wasn't allowed to resume. you'll recall yesterday governor newsom did lift the stay-at-home order for the state including the bay area, as you can see on this map right now. all nine counties have been moved back into the purple tier of reopening which means that outdoor dining, personal care salons, outdoor wineries, outdoor zoos, those businesses are able to reopen. bars, indoor gyms, indoor museums, indoor movie theaters, those type of businesses must remain closed. a number of restaurants in pleasanton and throughout the bay

meteorologist kari hall is timing it all out for us. >> and we are in between the weather systems. i wanted to take a closer look at this oakland camera you can see pointed towards the bay bridge. it is shaking around, so you do need to make sure you are very careful with those high winds that are still gusting, even as the weather system that we had yesterday starts to roll out of the bay area. we can still see some spotty rain as we take a look at the radar of some of these spotty showers moving across the region. but still some snow coming down for the sierra. we're going to see some of the rain tapering off today, but still the high winds, especially near the coastline, up until about 10:00 this morning. after that we'll have a lighter breeze and sunshine for today. and once again, this is our break before our next storm system comes in. we'll get a look at our wind forecast, how much rain and how much snow we'll see in the sierra as well as the bay area hills. that's coming up in a few minutes. mike, that wind advisory up for those bay area bridges. >> that's right. so you're

on the conditions, let's start with meteorologist kari hall. good morning. >> and, scott, it is crazy that we are talking about fire conditions in january. this is supposed to be the middle of our rainy season, but we haven't gotten a lot of it. now we're dealing with very dry vegetation and the winds coming in. and we have an elevated fire risk for the bay area. now some of our mountain wind gusts have already been over 80 miles an hour and for our valleys, we'll start to feel those winds going into this evening. so all you need are some type of spark that could really make things go out of control really quickly under these conditions. as we look at what's going on, right now most of us are feeling a light wind in some of the valleys. then you can see how that wind is funneling through the delta as we look at fairfield and even toward napa. 43-mile-per-hour winds. then it's been quite breezy in santa rosa as well. when you go up above 1,000 feet, these are the kind of winds we've seen. recent wind gusts in the hi healdsburg hills topping 87 m

let's go fo meteorologist kari hall, tracking the rain for us all morning. good morning, kari. >> good morning. it's nice to get a break where the rain can skrust soak into the ground. it is nice to see some breaks in the sky. i wanted to show you what's happening to the south of us. this atmospheric river has moved and stalled. as we get a closer look, in these last few frames we can see the rain is starting to retreat back to the north this is exactly what we were expecting as we are going to see the rain returning, especially for the south bay and some of those heavier downpours will start to creep back into the bay area, as well as the santa cruz mountains that will get additional rain later this evening. if you're wondering how much rain we've seen, it's been up to 4" of rain at the summit, lake curry and napa, on the border of sonoma county, had three inches of rain. almost three inches in fairfax. oakland and san francisco had .8" of rain. and we've seen those totals up to 1.75" in santa rosa, antioch 1.50, dublynn, 1.25, and about half an inch of rai

that dome is our storm ranger, and it can plunge through any fog and help meteorologist kari hall track the showers. when do the umbrellas come out? >>> well, we probably need them right now for a lot of those getting the heavy drizzle but not a lot in the radar in terms of the rain coming down from the clouds. very low across the bay area so even though you're walking out the door and feeling that mist on your face, it moved on. we're still seeing the dense fog and it's moving into the bay area and so we're seeing all of that moisture left behind with the storm system still with us even as we head through midday and we'll clear for the afternoon. our temperatures are still cool but warming up in the south bay. still some low 50s in the north bay. we're also getting more sunshine. thinner clouds are moving through. we'll see that gradually moving out. we'll have a nice weekend ahead. how much rain we've measured is coming up in the full microclimate forecast. >>> president-elect biden says his administration will release batches of vaccine to states all at once instead of holding them b

our meteorologist kari hall tracking when the next batch of rain will come in. good morning. >> good morning. we have seen the rain every other day in the forecast as we take a look at our visibility. that's been the issue throughout the morning, especially in parts of the north bay where it is still pretty hard to see around napa. visibility around to a quarter of a mile and a mile and a quarter in nevada. it is improving in some places. we take a look outside in walnut creek where now the clouds have parted and we're getting some sunshine. take a look at the low clouds and the fog that we're seeing huddling up with the buildings there in san francisco. and, so, in some parts of the city you are seeing some clear skies. temperatures today will stay in the mid-50s for the inland east bay, reaching into the upper 50s for parts of the north bay with santa rosa reaching 58 degrees. 59 in san jose. i amtraki tracking a storm syst coming in. the time line and how much you can expect coming up in the microclimate forecast. >> thank you. >>> well, nearly every day we c

meteorologist kari hall joining us. good morning. >> yeah, good morning, we're seeing a beautiful day across the south bay as well as the rest of the bay area. we getter get out there and take it in because we have huge changes on the way. this will be the last day of this warm weather. then by tomorrow, some off-and-on cool showers will be moving in and we could see some rain and possibly some snow on some of our bay area hills. as we look at these high temperatures for today, this is where we're headed. low 60s in parts of the north bare, martinas reachin degrees. we have not one, not two, but three storm systems headed our way. as we take a look at the satellite imagery, we can see the first one that will be dipping down from the pacific northwest as early as tomorrow. and once again, this will bring in our first round of rain but drag down some very cold canadian air. and then right behind that, there's another storm system and then another one right behind that that will move in on wednesday. so we'll talk about th

meteorologist kari hall is looking at what's happening off the coast and the risk those waves pose to the bay area and you'll explain what causes those dangerous waves. >> yes. so, during the winter months, we have a stronger gravitational pull from the moon. even in this still shot you can see the white caps on the waves. it's been pretty volatile at times with those big breakers coming in. you do want to make sure you're staying well way from the water. there is is still that chance one or two of these waves coming in today may reach over 20 feet as well as these long period swells. that means that the water draws you out. it takes a long time before the next wave comes in that could push you closer to the coast. the result is that you get drawn out farther to the ocean and you may get caught into some rip currents. some of those sneaker waves catch people off guard, they come up higher. with water temperatures only at 52 degrees maximum, you have two hours to survive in those conditions. it's been very dangerous. we also have the king tides. that maxed out earlier this morning. by

i posted an article about that from cnbc, my social media page at kari hall weather. if you want to check out more information. let's get to the rain. we are going to see some of the showers coming in here by tomorrow. we're all dry today. tomorrow it looks like we'll see a quick round of rain coming in during the afternoon. this is right in time for tomorrow evening's commute. and it's going to quickly move from north to south so it looks like as it continues to move out of the north bay, it's going to weaken and the south bay is not looking at a whole lot. if you're in the north bay you're going to get a nice soaking tomorrow. rainfall totals may possibly reach up to about a quarter of an inch, but for the most part most of the rest of the bay area is not going to see much out of this as we look at san francisco up to about a quarter of an inch but nothing for san jose and fremont. so that's our next wave of rain. it's very weak and then on friday another chance of, again, most likely spotty, light showers. we're drying out for the week as our temperatures reach int

meteorologist kari hall, how are we looking? >>> we're looking good for the north bay. that's where this much-needed rain is going to be coming in. right now we're starting out with dense fog and visibility very low in parts of marin as well as sonoma county. once again that rain moving in for the north bay here we are at 1:30 seeing it moving closer to santa rosa with some patches of brief, heavy rain. it will move through quickly and weaken out of the for the bay. the rain falling apart to spotty showers. i don't expect a whole lot here for the south bay. mike, you've been watching breaking news this morning, what's the update now? >> right behind me i have one of our cameras access. i see a tow truck blocking one lane still. we do have some live feeds coming in. it looks like they've stopped traffic for a short period of team. perhaps to move a vehicle there. talking about the bridge, we're looking at westbound dragging. looks like they've stopped all lanes temporarily. highway 37 to the north or the bay bridge to the south. either way out of richmond it takes about

meteorologist kari hall i'll have her forecast in a minute. bob redell is live with a look at the damage done. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, scott. sustained winds in the past few hours downtown los gatos, you can see the american flag there blowing to the left side there and as a result what we are talking about is a danger of wildfires. i know we're in january but the temperatures are warm, hasn't been much rain and with the winds a concern and there's a reason for it. this is from overnight in cupertino on cowell drive. a small fire on the side of the 280 ball on the calvert drive side. the fire department was able to put that out. last night in the hills above mill tee pass the fire spread to two acres before the fire department was able to put it out. several people were evacuated from their homes as a precaution. >> yeah, i think there's a fire at the end and we get to the door to get out and smell so bad, the smoke, and it's really, really weird, you know, the smoke is really bad. >> reporter: this is video from the al

first let's start with meteorologist kari hill -- hall, rather, sorry. with the impact of the rain and how long this storm will last. kari? >> it's going to be a high rain event. high winds moving in. this is where the storm is now, just now starting to make its way into the far northern corner of california. and we are quickly going to see our window close for preparation, and then time for just hunkering down and getting ready for all this rain that's heading in. look how much snow we're seeing farther to the north in redding, eureka. and we're seeing cold temperatures we already have in place. storm ranger, mobile doppler radar, we have it parked on san bruno mountain. it will give us a very high resolution view of the rain as it moves in and will take us into this evening, where the rain is really going to start to hit us. so, here is what to expect. it's cold out there now. we're all bundled up. we had some cold temperatures to start out this morning. as we go through the day, more clouds move in and the winds will really start to pick up. and we're
