meteorologist kari hall has been glued to her equipment, tracking this microclimate weather alert. kari, when will the wind die down? >> it's still pretty gusty out there, scott. although the high-wind warning has been allowed to expire, we are now seeing fires in the santa cruz mountains, as we get a look at what's going on here. some of our alert fire cameras picking up on these fires that have recently been sparked. there's not one but several of them in the santa cruz mountains. we'll continue to monitor this situation as we are still getting those high wind gusts across the bay area. some of those gusts reach over 90 miles per hour earlier this morning. so, this was the fear, that we could see some fire sparking across especially our upper elevations when those winds are just really roaring. we've had a lot of wind damage across the bay area. of course, as we go into the next several hours, very critical with this low humidity and also these high winds that do continue. we could possibly see some more fires developing. i'll continue to watch this as well as take a look ahead t

meteorologist kari hall is tracking that and the weekend forecast. we've been dying to get out for a little walk, kari. it's been rough. >> yeah. we can do that now that the sun has come back out. and we can see from our live camera from san jose, it's be a beautiful morning now. few lingering showers outside the sacramento valley, widening out the view to see what else is out there, the next storm is right there off our coast and will be moving in, starting in the north bay by tomorrow. so, as we look at how much rain we measured, this was huge. a lot of us got more rain with this one storm than we did all season long up to this point. and getting over 10 inches of rain at the santa cruz summit. morgan hill from this one storm reaching six inches of rain. fremont, redwood city, reacing over two inches of rain. we're seeing two inc san jose. oakley reaching over 2 inches of rain. so now that we are getting a chance to let all of that soak in, temperatures are still pretty cool. and we're going to only see it reach into the low 50s for today. we'll ta

meteorologist kari hall is tracking just a gorgeous start to the weekend. >> yes. and we're going to see more weather like this, scott. this is that look in the south bay as we get a live view in san jose. i did want to show you what i am watching as we go into the weekend. as we're seeing some big waves crashing up along the coast, we just now had a high surf advisory go into effect. for the rest of the weekend, near record high temperatures. we're talking highs up to 70 degrees today. and then by sunday, especially sunday night, we'll be watching out for the potential of a high wind event. high surf advisory, we will see some of those breakers up to 20 feet and with weather this beautiful, i know that people along the coastline will want to go out there and enjoy some time at the beach but stay well away from the water. we could see some of those sneaker waves coming up and catching people off guard and that can sweep you out into the ocean. you'll really want to be careful with that as well as temperatures that we're seeing inland, reaching into the 70s, especia

on the conditions, let's start with meteorologist kari hall. good morning. >> and, scott, it is crazy that we are talking about fire conditions in january. this is supposed to be the middle of our rainy season, but we haven't gotten a lot of it. now we're dealing with very dry vegetation and the winds coming in. and we have an elevated fire risk for the bay area. now some of our mountain wind gusts have already been over 80 miles an hour and for our valleys, we'll start to feel those winds going into this evening. so all you need are some type of spark that could really make things go out of control really quickly under these conditions. as we look at what's going on, right now most of us are feeling a light wind in some of the valleys. then you can see how that wind is funneling through the delta as we look at fairfield and even toward napa. 43-mile-per-hour winds. then it's been quite breezy in santa rosa as well. when you go up above 1,000 feet, these are the kind of winds we've seen. recent wind gusts in the hi healdsburg hills topping 87 m

let's go fo meteorologist kari hall, tracking the rain for us all morning. good morning, kari. >> good morning. it's nice to get a break where the rain can skrust soak into the ground. it is nice to see some breaks in the sky. i wanted to show you what's happening to the south of us. this atmospheric river has moved and stalled. as we get a closer look, in these last few frames we can see the rain is starting to retreat back to the north this is exactly what we were expecting as we are going to see the rain returning, especially for the south bay and some of those heavier downpours will start to creep back into the bay area, as well as the santa cruz mountains that will get additional rain later this evening. if you're wondering how much rain we've seen, it's been up to 4" of rain at the summit, lake curry and napa, on the border of sonoma county, had three inches of rain. almost three inches in fairfax. oakland and san francisco had .8" of rain. and we've seen those totals up to 1.75" in santa rosa, antioch 1.50, dublynn, 1.25, and about half an inch of rai

that dome is our storm ranger, and it can plunge through any fog and help meteorologist kari hall track the showers. when do the umbrellas come out? >>> well, we probably need them right now for a lot of those getting the heavy drizzle but not a lot in the radar in terms of the rain coming down from the clouds. very low across the bay area so even though you're walking out the door and feeling that mist on your face, it moved on. we're still seeing the dense fog and it's moving into the bay area and so we're seeing all of that moisture left behind with the storm system still with us even as we head through midday and we'll clear for the afternoon. our temperatures are still cool but warming up in the south bay. still some low 50s in the north bay. we're also getting more sunshine. thinner clouds are moving through. we'll see that gradually moving out. we'll have a nice weekend ahead. how much rain we've measured is coming up in the full microclimate forecast. >>> president-elect biden says his administration will release batches of vaccine to states all at once instead of holding them b

meteorologist kari hall is looking at what's happening off the coast and the risk those waves pose to the bay area and you'll explain what causes those dangerous waves. >> yes. so, during the winter months, we have a stronger gravitational pull from the moon. even in this still shot you can see the white caps on the waves. it's been pretty volatile at times with those big breakers coming in. you do want to make sure you're staying well way from the water. there is is still that chance one or two of these waves coming in today may reach over 20 feet as well as these long period swells. that means that the water draws you out. it takes a long time before the next wave comes in that could push you closer to the coast. the result is that you get drawn out farther to the ocean and you may get caught into some rip currents. some of those sneaker waves catch people off guard, they come up higher. with water temperatures only at 52 degrees maximum, you have two hours to survive in those conditions. it's been very dangerous. we also have the king tides. that maxed out earlier this morning. by

i posted an article about that from cnbc, my social media page at kari hall weather. if you want to check out more information. let's get to the rain. we are going to see some of the showers coming in here by tomorrow. we're all dry today. tomorrow it looks like we'll see a quick round of rain coming in during the afternoon. this is right in time for tomorrow evening's commute. and it's going to quickly move from north to south so it looks like as it continues to move out of the north bay, it's going to weaken and the south bay is not looking at a whole lot. if you're in the north bay you're going to get a nice soaking tomorrow. rainfall totals may possibly reach up to about a quarter of an inch, but for the most part most of the rest of the bay area is not going to see much out of this as we look at san francisco up to about a quarter of an inch but nothing for san jose and fremont. so that's our next wave of rain. it's very weak and then on friday another chance of, again, most likely spotty, light showers. we're drying out for the week as our temperatures reach int
