the taliban leaders have negotiated with dr abdullah abdullah and former president, hamid karzai. it is not clear to me that they have great incentives to make concessions to them, given how the republic and the afghan security forces folded rapidly. it is also an issue whether they want to include leaders who are so associated with the past corruption and who they decried as apoststates, as stooges of the west, but i wouldn't focus on those leaders, i would focus on whether technocrats are purged, executed or whether they are allowed to work in the taliban government. whether we will see ethnic representation, and of course women, at least in some form, being allowed to work in the government and outside the household. could this be a bit like iran, then? immediately after the revolution in 1979, a lot of the technocrats were expelled, a lot of professional people, for want of a better word, were punished and indeed executed, but then not very long afterwards i have certainly spoken to iranian expats in this country, who say relatives of theirs who held senior positions in things

we saw him at carr's eye, the former president, the first president of afghanistan —— hamid karzai. he was talking with the taliban and political leaders from other groups this week. they are saying no foreigners are being kidnapped. there was a report this morning that 150 indians had been detained on the way to the airport and the taliban said that group had been stopped, but only so they could been stopped, but only so they could be escorted to the airport securely. it says they are questioning some burners before they exit the country. that was something that will worry people —— questioning some foreigners. the expectation was if the right documentation is in your hand, you would be allowed to reach their part for evacuation flights. we know from experience on the ground that was not always happening, people were being stopped and in some cases been turned back, as well as being questioned. the taliban saying they are questioning people before they are allowed through to the airport to take those evacuation flights. but it does say here, ourfighters will evacuation flights.
