first year i was in congress drove across the hampton roads tunnel and i saw three ships, i was just at norfolk the week before. it was in the drydock for 27 months. we all know that -- there are five carriers and nor folk right now that cannot -- nor folk right now that cannot deploy. a variety of reasons but all because of maintenance. 73 was being refueled. 74 was waiting to be refueled. and the others that i mentioned. so we really have not been able to use the ofrp to increase added capacity, we just used it for other ships. easy double deployments of truman and ike for the last two and a half years. and we have gotten ourselves drawn back into the gulf again. with what happen with the drones in the saudi oil fields. and now, and afghanistan. i think this is one of the biggest mistakes that we have made, and maybe in my lifetime, strategically has taken the reagan from westpac and sent them to be in support of the withdrawal from afghanistan. going through my article, you have to have presidents to create a deterrent. if we do not show the resolve that we will keep a carrier, at a minimum,

i went to high school in virginia beach and my my family still lives there and my brother lives in norfolk. so i'm i'm pretty familiar with with what you guys do over there. and i really appreciate you guys taking the time to talk to me. so the rock force is an interesting book only in that i really had no idea of anything about anything about the 503. and i was in my editor's office in new york. brent howard and his grandfather jumped on corregidor and he was you know, we're talking about doing a book together and trying to find a topic and and he's the one that mentioned corregidor and the five or third and thought it would make for a great book. but at this point at that point, i really had no idea the only only really familiarity i had with rock force was that i saw they've got a mannequin in the special operations museum and fayetteville, north carolina of one of the paratroopers and i just knew that they had jumped in the pacific. so for me this book was as much of a journey of discovery as anything and and what i found i think was is really an overlooked operation and in the pacific
