cnn's jeff zeleny is at the white house. so jeff, what are we expecting to hear from the president in an hour? >> well, alisyn, and victor, president biden obviously knows well the challenges before him. he's watching this unfold in realtime with the voting rights legislation he has been pushing for made a priority is likely to fail this evening, hours after his press conference. that is sort of a sign of the limits of presidential power. but he also has been in this town long enough to see that things go up and they go down at the white house. at this moment, he believes this is a moment for a reset, to reset the -- just the very fact that he has command of all the challenges going on. talking to a white house official just a short time ago, this is how they framed what the president plans to do at the press conference. he will tap his accomplishments no doubt, but will also lean into some of those challenges. the official tells me this, the president knows there's much more work to do. he's going to level with the american

cnn correspondent stephanie elam joins us now. stephanie, does the school district have a plan if too many teachers or staff call out sick now? >> reporter: they do. what we are seeing here, remember, lausd has 640,000 students and they said some 62,000 staff and students have tested positive. that means they're not going to be able to come here back to school today. but they're also saying that when you look at the positivity rate for lausd, they're saying that number is just shy of 15%. for the county overall, it is above 21%. so this is why they're saying they are all systems go and they do believe it is safer for the kids to get back into school. on top of that, they're saying if teachers are not able to come in, because, let's say they tested positive, they say they have some 4,000 credential district staff who will be able to step into those classrooms and keep those classes going. overall there are some 1,000 schools in lausd and they have not closed any of them down during this academic session. they're saying. and they're

cnn's matt egan joins us from new york. matt, u.s. consumers, as we know, are already feeling anxious with high inflation. the biden administration had been pointing to lower gas prices over the past few weeks, so what are they saying now about this sudden increase? >> well, jim and bianna, alarm bells have got to be ringing inside the white house over energy prices. we actually saw gas prices start to tick lower at the end of last year, but that proved to be very short-lived. the national average at $3.31 a gallon. that's up about a penny from a week ago and more than a dollar from a year ago, and pump prices are likely to go higher in the coming weeks because gas follows the lead of oil. u.s. oil topped $85 a barrel this morning for the first time since late october. goldman sachs is calling for brent crude, the world benchmark to hit $100 a barrel by september and then $105 next year. that's going to drive gas prices even higher. prices are already in the danger zone for president biden and the white house knows it. let me read to

cnn's omar jimenez has more from st. paul, minnesota. >> reporter: over a year and a half later the federal trial for the other former minneapolis police officers charged in the killing of george floyd is taking jurors right back to the day floyd was murdered by derek chauvin in may of 2020. monday was dominated by opening statements by both the prosecution and the defense. the prosecution largely stuck to the charges arguing that thomas lane, jay alexander king and tu tou were dlub beliberately indifferent to george floyd's needs. they did not intervene and stop chauvin when the prosecution argues they had the chance to. all three have pleaded not guilty. part of the defense over the course of the day from their individual attorneys ranged from, well, they tried to intervene but were denied. they were deferring to the senior officer and the crowd didn't see the full story of what happened that day. one of the points they tried to intervene but couldn't as they said in the opening statements, lane will testify. lane aske

cnn's paula reid joins us now with more. what does it tell us about the status of the investigation into the congressman? >> in the on going investigation into alleged sex trafficking by congressman gaetz, this is a reminder the investigation no matter what he says is active. it's ongoing. and it could be nearing a conclusion. now, today's witness as you noted was an ex-girlfriend of gaetz's and she is seen as a key witness. she testified before the grand jury hearing evidence in the case in orlando today. and, anderson, i want to be clear. this is not the woman who was just 17 when sources say she allegedly had sexual contact with the congressman and several of his associates. this woman is a former-capitol hill staffer, she was linked to gaetz as far back as the summer of 2017. and that is significant because investigators are interested in that time period because that is when he is accused of having sex with that underaged girl. now, investigators are not only looking at whether he may have engaged in sex with that girl.
