i'm especially happy to be here at davis cade in memphis. it is one of my favorite book stores and i am usually hear teasing one of my kids on the also it's nice to be here on more professional circumstances tonight. i thought i would start by answering the two questions that i always get asked when i discussed my books. no, i'm not a hypochondriac and secondly i like writing about these stories because to me they are much more about people and they are about a disease. i am one of those people that if there is a natural disaster happening in the world i include to c-span for days. i know i'm not the only one. i think what draws us and is not the tragedy itself of these disasters but more just the hope and miracle of survival. that is what inspired by first book, the american plead about yellow fever and about one-third of it took place here in memphis because i really wanted to show what a yellow fever epidemic was like up close. that one epidemic in memphis in one season killed more people than we lost at pearl harbor and more than we lost

and the confluence of forces that brought king to memphis. my father was a lawyer. and he worked for the law firm that represented king when he came on behalf of the garbage workers who went on strike in the fall of -- excuse me, the spring of 1968. but i got kind of captivated by james earl ray. and this story really became not so much as the story of the assassination but how the fbi tracked down james earl ray, the largest manhunt in american history at that time, $2 million, 6,000 agents, four different countries. he was finally caught by scotland yard in london two months after the assassination as he was in route to become a mercenary soldier in rhodesia. somewhat like bonnie and clyde, ray has his own mythology and ray has his own self-conscious qualities, you know, trying to be kind of a folk hero, i guess. a very -- a very dark character. someone who i guess in a way is a consummate villain in this story. the villain becomes the protagonist because it's how he gets out of these different situations. how he assumes different identitie

that i studied in order to put this together included a biography of elvis presley, "last train to memphis," by peter guralnick or the book by connie bruck on steve ross, "master of the game," and also, "indecent exposure," that wonderful biography of david begelman -- the study of david begelman by david mcclintick. these are great biographies, i think, of contemporary figures that are told with -- in the narrative way so that there's a story. and a lot of the books of washington figures have indexes that make them seem more scholarly and more pedantic than i think that this book is. so there's that. secondly, the publisher decided after studying other books that a lot of people in washington buy a book by reading it backwards. they look at the index, see if they are in the book or someone they know is in the book and then make a purchasing decision. richard ben cramer's book,"what it takes," has no index. and it was packaged for the same purpose. why should there be an index when you should buy the whole thing without wondering who's in it? the paperback version will have an index, i am
