breaking news in prince george's county. a gunman who took a hostage for nearly 9 hours in capital heights this morning. we talked with two of the hostages. >>reporter: a terrifying ordeal f family members who say they were inside the house when the gunman stormed n eight people were being held hostage. the standoff ended nine hours later, after the suspect turned the gun on himself. this chopper video shows the wild seen on richborrow road. police were in the middle of a standoff with a gunman, that barricaded himself inside a house with a female hostage. others who said they were taken hostage, and she was 18 and the ex-girlfriend of the gunman who didn't want to let her go. the gunman, upstairs in the master bedroom, turned the gun on himself. >> he got mad. >> i came home with my girlfriend, and he had everybody hostage. he eventually let us out of the house. he took my niece upstairs, that is where it all ended at. >> it is not unusual inthis situation for a barricade to last this long. time is on our side. >> reporter:

prince george's county executive candidate rushern baker celebrating on this day. at 11:30 last night he claimed victory in the race for county executive over share of mike jackson. this has been an interesting race of two high-profile, well- funded candidates. they felt perhaps mike jackson a couple too many controversies surrounding the sheriff's department. baker has campaigned for change and he said in his acceptance speech that change is what you'll bring to the county. >> i think the people have spoken. [applause] i think the message is loud and , it isprince george's time to a medical good county great. george starling himself was quite frugal. and during the days when they were actually winning in those groves, he was saving a lot of money. they were making so much more money than they had before. >> what did he do when he got to harlem? how did he make his money there? >> interestingly, he took a job as a railroad porter, where he ended up going right back to the south that he had sworn he'd never go back to. he found no trouble finding work, because being male gave him something of an advantage in that era. and he also -- it was during world war ii when he left, as opposed to ida mae, who left during the depression. so, life was so much easier. so, he found a job as a railroad porter and went back and forth. and there are lots and lots of stories of him going back and forth, observing the migration and then running into -- the experience of going back south. in other words, going from a place that was free, and then having to adjust oneself whenever he went back to the south. >> what were the adjustments? >> well, one of

she's got more now on the closely watched race for prince georges county executive. who's vying to be the ne leader for the county's neay 900,000 residents. >> reporter: as you know, this is an extremely critical primary here in prince georges county. chances e, whoever wins the democratic primary today will become the next county executive in prince georges county. there are no repuican challengers. there are a lot of politking and electioning going on here in upper marlboro. the candidates are baker, jackson, dean, levi and turner. they're all vying to become the next county executive. the county board elections told me today that surprisingly, turnout has been extremely low today. as of 3:00, only about 2% of voters had had gone to the polls. >> it's surprisingly going very slow. the percentage of people coming out has been very, very minimal. we're thinking at first a lot of this is due to the fact that we had thearly voting for the first time this year. >> because of the economy and everything goingon, health care, education, the foreclosures, i just think if i

george? as you speak about the systems, the systems today are real different than it was i came out of treatment 25 years ago, in that there's more availability of systems willing to allow you to access services, employment and church-based services and faith-based services and so forth. and in our program is that we have the client advocate, the case management component that help the client move along the systems and help them to understand the systems, to help them to navigate those systems, and sometimes to negotiate them. how do i negotiate with the criminal justice systems? that can be very complex for the individual as well as for the family member, as well. and for us, it's about citizenship. how do we start the conversation around what i'm doing now in recovery is helping me to restore and to establish being a citizen, a normal george citizen, and accessing those things that help me in that journey. and that is employment and support services. and the whole faith-based piece as well
