(laughter). >> stephen: the key is to not get hit. somebody should have told you that. (laughter). >> you know, stephen, i miss the camaraderie, i miss training camp. i miss choreographing the fight in my head. i miss all that action. >> stephen: choreograph, do you tap dance, like all americans do? >> yes. a little bit. >> stephen: a little bit? >> stephen: heel ball change... what do you call that? kick ball change? >> that's as far as i got. >> stephen: now you really came to prominence in the 1976 montreal games and that's when i became a huge

and i went to roy leonard's show in chicago, and i sang it. and by the time i got to the other stations where i was singing it, the telephone lines had lighted up, and they had all threatened to cut all the funding for these shows if i sang this song. so, yes, it does happen. and you have to be courageous and go ahead and sing. that path you took professionally and politically began with a rented national guitar, is that right? yes. i had been a pianist, and i studied piano seriously with a teacher who wanted me to become a great pianist. and she said she thought i had the stuff. and i had had a debut with the-- with the symphony orchestra playing mozart at 13, but by the time i was 14, i had heard things like, um, ♪ 'twas in the merry month of may ♪ ♪ when the green birds were swellin'. ♪ ♪ a young man on his deathbed lay ♪ ♪ for the love of barbara allen. ♪ and you know, i think mozart and debussy paled in comparison, because i fell in love with folk music, and i never looked back. and i had this national guitar from the rent

did not know about leonard cohen. that was my universe i could preserve it and he could not touch. that is really -- that kept me strong and allowed me to survive the ordeal for 118 days. tavis: how lumley were you treated in those 118 days? >> you see, i was in solitary confinement for 107 days. during those 118 days, but i was in prison, 107 out of 118 in solitary confinement, i was almost beaten on a daily basis, slapped tomicah it, punched, -- slapped and kicked and punched and i was also psychologically mistreated but the worst part of torture was a solitary confinement itself. because human beings are social animals. human beings need to communicate. human beings need to express their feelings and need to be loved and need to touch people. need to speak to people and depriving people that, that was the worst torture. when people ask me ok, you spent 107 days in solitary confinement but did they torture you? it is like if you ask someone who has cancer, you feel sick, do you have any ellises? that solves her conf

to leonard 66 officers have already elected in the drop, that's 47% -- 27 officers have completed their full drop time, either the one, too, or three year timeframe depending on their rank which is out their maximum eligibility is concluded. 49 officers, 9% elected in and chose to leave early. a drop election is a revocable. once they are in, it cannot be waived off. they would leave the service. that leaves 190 officers currently participated -- currently participating in drop. the numbers at the bottom are of more interest to the retirement board so we can service the officers and insure those who want to elect in will indeed be able to be processed and right now there are 204 remaining officers on the force to have the ability to elect drop if they so desire. that would have to occur by the end of june unless the program would be extended. the next two lines are those who have received personal counseling from the retirement system or will receive counseling, which we strongly recommend they do before they submit their drop election. the last number are those who are eligible but hav

i mentioned leonard goldberg. when i interviewed him we got along famously pps if i would write a pilot on my experience and hollywood you would say yes because there's a lot of money involved. that's what i did. we went into development and i got an agent. everything was going to it i had a terrific meeting with an agent at the best in ten years until three weeks later got a call from him. he said one of my agents googled you and found your web site and at that point my stomach goes through the four pieces i'm not sure we can represent you because he thinks your political views will make it impossible for you to get a job in this town. one of the producers in town had seen my work and told the agent that he knew who i was and he would never work with me. that's how it works in hollywood. scores, hundreds of conservatives in hollywood will not come out for fear of losing their career and they are right because they would lose their career. the biggest names in the industry i won't mention here because it would dam

i still meet with professor leonard, city leaders, but occasionally, to give them updates on our recovery program, neighborhood empowerment programs, and we continue to be updated about where we are at the national level. and of course, we are still taking lessons from everything from not only chile, new zealand, new orleans, but now the newest set of tragedy. what they are doing in alabama and mississippi, what they are doing in those disasters, as we focus on our seismic expectations. i continue to pay a lot of attention to the new seismic lifelines council that we created, through my work in the city administrator's office. that council continues to be unique as it brings together all of our utility agencies in the city, whether the departments or private sector, bringing them in the same room to talk about our gaps, about what we can recover, whether it is pg&e, telecommunications, or emergency coordination with our public utilities commission, having the heads of our fire and police department there, building department there, listening and understanding our role as the lifeline coun
