ninas do santos is covering this from london. good morning, nina, give us a sense, you've been following debt bond yields in europe and their responses to the euro zone crisis. how does that relate to how bond investors are going to see the debt ceiling discussions in the united states? >> well, if anything, we can use, for instance, some of the countries that are running the risk of a default, for instance, greece as an example of the ramifications the u.s. faces if it doesn't manage to nail down the debt ceiling issue and to try and avoid a default. greek yields have been in the double digits for ages really, and what we're seeing at the moment yields on u.s. treasuries rising in response to the ongoing concerns about hammering out a plan to tackle that 14.3 tlts ceiling in the united states and raise it. on the stock markets, we do have some stock markets opening lower. ftse 100 edging back into positive territory finally after about an hour and a half of losses. one bright spot i want to bring you up to date with, is gold. th

the london ftse making some gains, so is the xetra dax t. zurich smi is pretty much flat at the moment on this wednesday morning. nina? >>> pauline, of course, the effects of italy's debt crisis are being next right across the board. let's have a look at where the ftse is. the milanese has lost about 4,000 points in the last six months alone as fears of contagion after the bailout is awarded have been hitting the shores in italy. it is the southern and peripheral areas of the eurozone that are most at risk. we also have the euro trading at 1.40 versus the dollar. up a little bit. boy, is that a currency that has suffered over the last few days because a lot of people have been saying that if italy is the next country that requires a bailout, it could be too big to fail. >>> nina, we're also seeing investors flee to the safe haven of the yen. it has broken that 80-yen mark but weakening just slightly from yesterday at 79.63. china announced a higher than expected gdp figure for june which eased worries about an abrupt slowdown in the economy.

let's go to this story in london. rebekah brooks will answer questions before parliament about this hacking scandal. how shocking is today's arrest? >> it is pretty shocking. people expected the police to talk to her and she was expected to show up at the hearing and on friday her spokesperson told us that she is expected to at least answer their questions. she did not, however, expect to walk in on sunday and be arrested. so it clearly was a shock to rebekah brooks herself and it sent shocks throughout the media. so this investigation -- the reason why she was arrested was because of an ongoing allegations of phone hacking and also that "news of the world" had paid off police officers to get information. so it's important to point out that she was arrested this afternoon and she still remains in their custody. she's been questioned for more than five hours and we're waiting at this point for police to give us more details and we're expecting a press conference any minute now. >> so this arrest hits closest to rupert

local time here in london, they were called to the scene of an apartment in north london where police officers acording to a statement said they found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene. her record label universal released a statement moments ago saying we're deeply saddened at the sudden loss of such a gifted musician, artist and performer. our prayers go out to amy's family, friends and fans at this difficult time. she has had a real history of drug abuse and alcohol abuse throughout her short career. she's just 27 years old. and she has been in rehab many times. and her last appearance on stage was in serbia in belgrade where she was booed off the stage, people saying she did not seem her -- she did not seem to be with it and just after that she decreed with her record label she would get help and she came out of a rehab facility and now we understand now is that just about 3 1/2 hours ago, police were sent to her home and that's where she was found dead. again, they're not saying what the cause of her death is, they're simply saying it is unexpla

paul mcmullen joins us from london. you didn't engage in any phone hacking yourself, knew about it, went along with it. is it morally wrong for journalists to tap into the voice mail of some celebrity or royal family member? >> well, i've always said no. my argument is if you want to have a free democracy and an open society where politicians behave well, you have to have a press that is allowed to stray into the areas of the dark arts, i.e., not the illegal area, to catch people out. fundamentally you don't go to a politician and say, hello, i'm a "news of the world" reporter, are you having an affair with your secretary while presenting yourself as a happily married man. you've got to be more clever than that, you've got to catch them. i think that's the public interest defense, that sometimes it's in the best interest of the country to have -- after all, who polices the police and who polices our politicians if it isn't a free press? >> if journalists are going to try to police politicians and the police andon'theysi

and andy coulson has turned himself into the police in central london. they said yesterday they wanted to talk to him about the hacking saga, and claims of his payments to two police officers. and this woman, news international chief executive and former "news of the world" editor, rebekah brooks, formerly rebekah wade, has taken plenty of flack. she's been facing calls to step down but denies knowledge of the hacking. >>> want to show you some live pictures, charles, waiting for the british prime minister, david cameron to speak. he is expected to speak very soon. mr. cameron has come in for his fair share of criticism. he employed andy coulson, former "news of the world" editor, the man at the center of a lot of these hacking allegations. he employed andy coulson as his head of communications. coulson has since resigned. there is newspaper speculation rife in the uk that coulson may be arrested in connection with the hacking in the next few days. waiting for the prime minister to address those issues. we'll bring you that live when it happens. >>> earl

let's bring in cnn's dan rivers who's been following this story from london. so dan, has the move to shut down the paper kind of quelled the public anger? >> well, interestingly, we're hearing that the print run of the paper is actually doubled for tomorrow's edition to 5 million copies. rather than about 2.5 million which is about normal circulation. we have got a copy now of the front page which i think we can bring up which is a collage of all of the various different front pages down the decades with the headline across the front thanks and goodbye. we're just waiting here now for most of the staff to come out of this building behind me, including the editor collin miler who we're thinking will make a statement. earlier a few of the employees came out. here's what they said. >> it's extremely emotional, but every single one of us stays very proud that we're working for the news of the world. we're very proud of our colleagues, we're very proud of our editor and we go out with our heads held up high. >> reporter: one other british newspaper here is asking t

what's the good news in this scandal coming out of london? >> first of all, "news of the world," it never was. and the reason that it was the highest circulated newspaper in the world is not -- does not have anything to do with news, necessarily, as it has to do with semi-naked people and celebrities and scandal, and better even if you can put them all together. the good news here, though, because we don't rejoice in the closing of any newspaper these days, but it could happen to any one of us. but the good news is that there are actually boundaries. which in this culture, in the celebrity tabloid culture, and i don't blame tabloids for that, it's the culture at large, it's nice to know there are boundaries. and apparently rupert murdoch, as you pointed out, is the last great press barren, found one of those boundaries and stepped over it. and there were consequences. it's always good to know what the prompters of your cultures in the extremes. >> bonnie, what are the parameters for the culture media? i'm not sure i entirely agree with phil.

dan rivers is following the developments in london with new arrests, right? >> yeah, well, that's right. andy carson, the former editor, was arrested friday here in the uk. he was questioned for about nine hours in london police station and then released on bail. so that is a very significant development. that followed revelations that the newspaper had been bribing police officers in order to get stories. something that has been illegal here for more than 100 years. but that wasn't the only arrest in this saga. there were a number of other arrests including a 63-year-old man who was believed to be a private detective who worked for the newspaper. and also its former royal correspondent who had already served a four-month sentence in prison for hacking into prince william's voice mail. he was rearrested and questioned again over the allegations of bribing officers. >> and, dan, i wonder, has there been anything said about the former editor, one of the top executives, rebecca brooks, and whether she should be worried at all that investigators will be coming he
