>> that's right, randi. the gap is as wide as it's been in 25 years of the housing market was the biggest hit in the west. that's the biggest reason the pew research study said there's such a disparity in household wealth. take a look at this. according to the study the median household wealth among hispanics fell 66% from 2005 to 2009. black households suffered 53% drop in net worth and whites suffered 16%. now, the standard also shows the median wealth of hispanic households. 5,677 for african-americans compared to $113,000 as a median wealth for white households in 2009. it's important to note household wealth means assets such as car, home, savings, minus the family's debts like loans and credit card bills. it's not really family income per se. for a lot of people trying to strive for the american dream, they put a lot of their money into their homes. >> they sure did. >> other white families or black families, hispanic families were not very diverse in their portfolio. two-thirds of their entire wealth

randi? >> and all are okay, which is wonderful news, considering what we just saw there in the video. any idea why you had come under fire? >> reporter: what we know is that when we arrived at the outskirts of the village, there was a check point manned by two teenage boys. they told us that gadhafi's forces had entered the village. the drivers went to the top of the hill next to the road. when they got to the hop, they saw just about 150 yards away from them, two carloads of military forces. we actually saw them just moments before that incident that you saw on tape. and they also came under fire. clearly what had happened is the gadhafi forces out flanked the very lightly defended rebel forces in the village and started to open fire. as you know, a long battle ensued and it was not until this time yesterday that the rebels were there. this is significant because it's about the last road before you get to the main highway that links southern libya with the capital tripoli. and that's a gadh

randi? >> paul, thank you, your next update from the best political team on television is just an hour away. >>> a new hour brings a new push to end a stand off that is getting very, very old. the house of representatives is reconvening as we speak to reconsider a debt plan it was planning on voting on yesterday. today, of course, we are one day closer to d-day, default. the government's ability to handle obligations could be less than four days away if the president signs an increase in the treasury's authority to take on debt by selling bonds. house speaker, john boehner still trying to sell his fellow republicans to hike the debt limit by $2.5 trillion. he'd also cut spending over ten years. senate majority leader reid says there's no time to wait for the house or he'll try to pass his own plan to cut spending by at least $2.2 trillion by raising the debt limit by $2.7 trillion all at once. for his part, president obama says, and i'm quoting here, "the power to solve this is in our hands.

randi? >> do you have a sense from other afghan leaders from this wave of executions and assassinations, are they concerned of their own safety and security? >> reporter: being in politics here in afghanistan, there's always a danger. we spoke to a member of parliament, a women that doubles the amount of danger that they endure on a day-to-day basis. but it's clear the series of high profile assassinations created a certain paralysis in the government. so the question really becomes a question of who you can trust x is the location that is supposed to be safest really safe for afghan politicians. >> is anything being done to increase security for them? >> reporter: again, there is not that much they can do. you can rotate your bodyguards, but at the same time, this is afghanistan and it's very unpredictable in terms of who has access to who. there are all kinds of corruption, and that's a major problem here. but in terms of what this represents, and both in terms of the taliban and the assas

"cnn newsroom" continues. >> hello to all of you, the debt ceiling deadline is one week away. we're tat that seven-day deadline. we're warned all financial hell will break loose until washington increases borrowing power. while there's plenty of partisan bickering in public, there's still no sign anyone is willing to compromise on a deal to increase credit limit. couple of things happening. first the white house. they are calling in troops. veterans group there at pennsylvania avenue being briefed on what could happen to their ranks if the debt ceiling is not raised. also cnn is learning some states making contingency plans. california specifically taking out a temporary $5 billion loan just to help pay its bills in case congress fails to act and turmoil in the credit market makes it difficult to borrow money after august 2nd. take a walk with me. i want to look at what exactly is proposed here. we have two different plans, two different bills on the table. one from democratic leader,
