and at berkeley -- i won't give you the whole litany -- but berkeley is one of those communities that is highly educated. we have 22 nobel prize winners from brerkly. the gentleman from fema, we have more people take "the new york times" percent-wise than new york city. we also take "the chronicle" in higher percentage than people? san francisco. i don't know. people in berkeley have been extremely generous. we have one of the highest tax rates in the nation. you know, not just in the state but in the nation, and people have still said it's important for them to deal with disaster preparedness and to make steps -- earthquake our schools. so the citizens of berkeley have actually approved $362 million in bonds to strengthen our schools, all 16 schools have been strengthened or re paired or reconstructed. the city now has an earthquake-safe emergency command center. they've given us money to be able to -- what i really like, it's a really cool thing, an emergency water supply where they take it down to the bay and drop it in the bay and they can pump water all the way up to the hills if

high and berkeley city college. cal's annual mario savio memorial lecture was already scheduled to be taking place tonight. it was scheduled to be held this year in some ballroom on campus, but thanks to a request from the occupy cal protesters, the mario savio lecture tonight will be held outdoors, it will be held outdoors where the plaque is. where those cops beat up those protesting students. just last week. at this hour, the student protesters are reportedly planning to erect tents on the grass near where the lecture is to be given. because of that, they say they expect a confrontation with police. they expect to be removed from the free speech memorial plaza again. maybe in the middle of the mario savio free speech memorial lecture. mario savio's widow put out a statement saying the lecture was going to be moved outside, quote, in protest against the use of excessive police force and against nonviolent demonstrators. she said, we apologize for your inconvenience, but as mario said, there comes a time. today in

. >>> uc berkeley campus police have launched their own p.r. offensive. it comes in the wake of a video that shows how they cracked down on campus protestors. they say they are getting mixed messages from their bosses. phil? >> reporter: that is right, dana. demonstrations aren't new in berkeley. they've been happening for decades. but now the cops are getting tired of what they see as finger-pointing after the fact. here is the story. november 9th, it was an image that went worldwide and drew criticism from the top of the university of california administration. cops using batons on student demonstrators. >> i was appalled by what i saw in that film click at davis and by the prodding with the batons at berkeley. we need to know who gave the orders, we need to know what happened immediately before the events occurred, what occurred after. >> reporter: today the union representing uc berkeley cops fired back with a letter, saying it was not their decision to engage protestors and telling the higher-ups please don't ask us to enforce your policies and then

high and berkeley city college. cal's annual mario savio memorial lecture was already scheduled to be taking place tonight. it was scheduled to be held this year in some ballroom on campus, but thanks to a request from the occupy cal protesters, the mario savio lecture tonight will be held outdoors, it will be held outdoors where the plaque is. where those cops beat up those protesting students. just last week. at this hour, the student protesters are reportedly planning to erect tents on the grass near where the lecture is to be given. because of that, they say they expect a confrontation with police. they expect to be removed from the free speech memorial plaza again. maybe in the middle of the mario savio free speech memorial lecture. mario savio's widow put out a statement saying the lecture was going to be moved outside, quote, in protest against the use of excessive police force and against nonviolent demonstrators. we said, we apologize for your inconvenience, but as mario said, there comes a time. today in n

uc berkeley police fire on pan who pulled a gun. happened this afternoon at computer lab at the school of business. john is live on camp because that story tonight. john. >> dan fit police say there was a videocamera in that computer lab that may have captured the actual somewhating. police are still trying to identify the suspect and in the sure if he is connected to uc berkeley at all. now tonight in a classroom at the school of business we saw university police alameda county investigators questioning witnesses who saw the somewhating or who heard it. when the uc berkeley officer opened fire on man reportedly point ago gun. in the lab it's still sealed off and guarded by uc of sevrlts around 2:18 this afternoon a uc employee reported seeing a man with a backpack and gun walk into that lab on the third floor. she told her bosses that a 911 call went out. 2 minutes later police say 4 officers approach the suspect. one of the officers fired several shots. tonight witnesses are telling police here they heard what so so you knowed lik

and new information on the man tonight shot and killed on the uc berkeley campus. alex savage has more on that and a look at the computer lab where it all happened. >> reporter: well, chris travis had been working at a security company and also taking classes to earn his degree from the haas school of business. but yesterday afternoon he was shot to death by university police after he brought a loaded gun into a crowded computer lab here on campus. a facebook tribute page set up to honor 32-year-old chris travis, the uc berkeley business student shot to death yesterday after pointing a gun at campus police. his brother said he was a great person and asked people not to judge him? meanwhile, the room where the shots are fired is still closed off where there was a crime scene this afternoon. the entire thing is captured on this surveillance video. jesse pereso, a computer lab manager showed us where travis was sitting when he was approached and ordered to drop the loaded handgun he was holding. pareso said there was a number of students in the room when they fired. >

the uc berkeley chancellor we talked with him this afternoon, he told us that there was a woman, a staff member who spotted this man or road the elevator with this man and saw the gun in his backpack. he apparently while he was in the elevator with this staff member, he reached in the backpack and reached in for the gun. that drew concern in her and she ended up alerted authorities. no one hurt in this shooting, we are still waiting. we asked police for an update on the condition of the man with the gun who was shot. he was rushed over to highland hospital we understand. we don't know his condition, police are not releasing his condition. they're not saying much about who he is either. we asked whether he's a student, they said at this point it's unclear if this person is a student or not. all we know is he is a man, a white man in his 20s, and again, uc berkeley police confronted him. he had a weapon they say inside of the business school this afternoon and he was shot by uc berkeley police officers. that's the latest as we know it here from the cal campus, i'm alex sadvedge. >>> from a
