let's go to jack cafferty. >> thanks. as newt gingrich continues his rise in the polls, there is one key issue that could hold him back. character or will it. a new quinnipiac poll shows he scores higher than mitt romney on most key leadership traits except for personal character. for example, republican voters say gingrich is a stronger leader by romney by 34% to 24. they say he's stronger on foreign policy 46% to 16 and they say gingrich has the right knowledge and experience to be president by 48% to 22%. these are huge margins. but gingrich trails romney 32% to 9 when it comes to who has a strong moral character. a lot of that likely goes back to gingrich's personal baggage. overall, gingrich is at the top of the republican pack in this poll. 26%. compared to romney's 22 and the rest are also ranked. in a head to head match-up, gingrich does even better. he tops romney by ten points, but it might not matter. ooempb though republicans find gingrich competent, they worry about his character. family values part and all t

only here on cnn. >>> back to jack cafferty for the "cafferty file." >> this will be your second debate this election season, right? >> i did tampa and now, washington, d.c. it's very exciting and i'm honored. it's a great thrill to do it. >> great stuff. you do a good job, too. much bert than some of your colleagues at the other networks. just about a year out now until election day, the united states is a rationally divided nation when it comes to president obama. consider these numbers. a new cnn opinion research corporation poll shows that whites disapproved of the way president obama's handling his job by a margin of 61% to 36%. that's almost 2-1. for nonwhites, it's the mirror image. only 32% disapprove while more than twice as many, 67%, approve. for a president who is supposed to symbolize a post racial america, this isn't good news. when mr. obama defeated john mccain in 2008, he did it with significant support from white americans. exit polls from that election showed that obama won 43% of white voters. that was the largest share of white support in a two-man race since 1976.

. >>> jack cafferty's here with the "cafferty file." >> a new poll suggests republicans more likely to go to church than democrats. this is fascinating to me. a gallup poll shows that 40% of republicans say they attend churnl weekly. 21% say they attend nearly weekly and 38% say they seldom go to church. only 27% of democrats go to church every week and 52% of democrats say they seldom or never go to church. these polls also show that democrats are less religious and republicans are more religious. consider this. almost one in five democrats identify with no religious faith. about 20%. compared to only one in ten republicans who feel that way. just 10%. this might explain why religion often seems to play a more prominent role when it comes to republican politicians, especially during the primaries. this time around, rick perry held a major prayer session in houston at the astrodome before he announced his candidacy. he's also been known to pray for president obama and last april, he designated a three-day period as days of prayer for rain in texas. faith also plays a large role in mich
