more now on the evolving sex abuse scandal at penn state. joining me, ron mott, in state college p.a. for us once again. what's the latest from your vantage point, ron? >> reporter: hey there, alex. good day. one of the things people were looking forward to this week was getting this football game played and getting it over with after everything we saw this week with coach paterno being fired on wednesday and that riot as some described it with the students acting out on campus. they got a stern talking to from everyone from the governor on down about how to compose themselves for this -- comport themselves for this game on saturday. they were almost muted at the beginning of the game yesterday. the crowd really wasn't into it as much as i thought they could have been or would have been otherwise. then as the course of the game went on, they got a little more enthusiastic. one of the things we noticed, too, coming out of the gate, both teams met at 50-yard line and all the players got down on a knee and said a prayer for all of the victims o

none of that was going on at penn state. they arrived mostly in a benign way, because they generally speaking as compared to the general standards of college football and big-time college sports they did the right things, they arrived at a point where nonetheless there was no institutional control. where nobody was big enough, nobody, not the athletic director or university president was big enough or powerful enough to say to joe paterno and the football program, wait a second. wait a second. hold on. we got to do something here. they obviously were so concerned about the money that was raised by the football program and the importance of the image of that program to the university that they were willing to turn a blind eye to possibly horrific behavior rather than risk the hit to their image that they would have taken had they acted at the very latest in 2002 and probably they should have done it prior to that. >> bob costas, thank you again this week for your reporting on what continues to be an awful story. by the way, a
