as you know, bret, just at the end of last year, speaker house boehner achieved trillions in revenue by reforming the tax code and can do that from the well connected. we are only asking for $580 billion. and not a trillion. $580 billion . that is balanced and it is fair. >> i will talk about revenue in a second. you have the social security disability trust fun that runs out of the money in 2016 on the president's watch . the medicare trust fun runs out in 2024 . we have the social security that only pays out what it takes in . impose the overnight cut in benefits in 2033 . change cpi in 2035. the question is does the president believe that more has to be done? >> the president believes that we will continue to work to strengthen the program in ways that protect them ands for our seniors. what is interesting the alternative proposal from the house republicans, that would voucherize medicare as i said and claims to balance the budget without providing spectaculars . the - specifics. they don't want to get in the details of how you provided tax cuts to the mostly well off. you have to

we were very close to an agreement with speaker boehner. that included serious entitlement savings and spending cuts. but it also included having reasonable amount of revenues, overall the package is more than $2 in spending cuts for every dollar in revenue. what the president has done is kept the same offer to the speaker on the table that we had in december. the speaker himself had put forward $1 trillion in revenue and has unfortunately pulled back any revenue even though only about 60% of that was done in the fiscal plan. so all the president is doing is asking for what i think everybody in the american public would like, who would like to see stronger job growth and like to see an economy doing better and better. for the middle class, is that we compromise and have saens of fairness and balance. >> it's the word, obviously, mr. spurling, balance, that creates a lot of the conversation there in the nation's capital here as well. given the fact that there's two different perspectives, of this idea of balance. >> i want to talk about what

i think, christine, that boehner and the republicans were largely responsible for the sequester and we don't know for sure how much the sequester impacted this number. it was a very cold and snowy march in much of the u.s. and that was a factor as well but for the republicans to complain when they were complicit with the sequester is disingenuous at best. >> payroll tax holiday, when it went away at the beginning of the year we were surprised that the the strength in the economic reports. could it be that is starting to bite? >> yes, for the first couple of months, christine, january, february, everything looked fine, into march it looked fine but when you combine the payroll tax hike, which does hurt consumers, and then you combine all this anxiety over furloughs and layoffs coming with sequester, you add them up plus high energy prices the stars are in alignment for weaker growth. >> rana, the idea we're entering into a new phase in the american economy where the normal economic growth that we're used to seeing doesn't translate to the commensurate jobs growth you're used to seeing.
