at least 23 wounded in two explosions at the boston marathon. this occurred about 2:10 eastern time. two explosions very near the finish line, right it finish line, another one it appeared about a block shy of the finish line on boylston street in boston. we do not have official word that the explosions were caused by bombs but the boston marathon officials are describing them as bombs. we have received reports from our own reporter and also from the associated press that its police found at least one and maybe two additional explosive devices that the boston bomb squad has dealt with. bob orr has been talking to his sources and federal law enforcement. bob, what do you know? >> scott, we've been careful as we should be in something like this because we don't have anywhere close to all the facts here. and we laid out all the possibilities. these could be explosive devices, they could be something accidental. but when we asked federal official a short time ago are we safe in assuming that these are bombs, he said, quote, heck yes, what else could

is this the moment that the second suspect in the boston marathon bombing has been captured? we do not know yet. police radio frequencies a moment ago described someone in custody at this scene. there was a cheer that went up from the crowd. but we do not have confirmation that the man who is? custody, the man who was seen around the boat, is in fact 19-year-old dzhokar tsarnaev, the last remaining suspect in the boston marathon bombings. his brother, as you may know, was killed last night when the two brothers were involved in a ferocious nooir fight with police officers. bombs were thrown. 200 rounds of ammunition was fired in that firefight. his older brother, 26-year-old tamerlan tsarnaev, was killed. a police officer was gravely wounded, and the search has been on for the 19-year-old younger brother ever since. boston police, apparently, have tweeted, "suspect in custody. custody." we want to be very careful about this. it's a tweet that we understand came from the boston p.d., "suspect in custody." it is the same thing that we have heard on the police scann scanner. the

we look at the sight of the boston marathon. i don't know if you've mentioned so far, but there are a multitude of injuries. appears there are dozens of people injured. still looking at confirming that there have been fatalities, but a lot of these injuries have been dramatic and very serious injuries, being described as loss of limbs, tremendous amount of blood. described by witnesses as to explosions that occurred. occurred not at ground level, but possibly from above their head. no word on what caused those explosions. it is worth noting how significant a day this is for boston. the boston marathon is a massive event for the city, really for the state of massachusetts and all these people from all over the country and world to run this historic race. it is patriots' day, a lot of workplaces have the day off. the city of boston is not just packed with people running the marathon, people downtown to go to the baseball game, the red sox play. the marathon is occurring today, and all those runners coming across the finish line at

the boston marathon is a heavily policed event. more than 500 national guard troops were on scene as well as members of the boston police and fire departments. but that did not prevent this from happening. >> anyone can walk up to the sidelines on the stretch of boylston street, anybody can get off the subway or bicycle in or walk down, and walk right up to the lines where this bomb took place. it would be impossible to screen everybody along the 26-mile route of a marathon. >> reporter: cities around the nation now on high alert. bomb-sniffing dogs patrolling the streets of chicago. airports in washington and new york, stepping up their security. in new york, the stepped-up police presence could be seen everywhere. police cars lined the streets in times square, which itself was the scene of an attempted bombing in 2010. that was only foiled when a local vendor alerted police about a suspicious car. the attack is one of many targeting u.s. civilians. in 1993 terrorists targeted the world trade center, killing six people. two years
