greg, we know that the ntsb's go-team left washington. they are, if not already in san francisco, pretty close to landing there. when they hit the ground, what's the first order of business for the ntsb investigators on the scene? >> well, the big thing for the team right now is to get organized. given the fact that they're going to be there late in the afternoon, they're not going to be able to do a whole lot of on-scene activity tonight. so they'll start organizing the particular groups with subject matter experts from the ntsb and be prepared to go out and start doing the on-scene documentation. the other thing they want to make sure that they get is, of course, the cockpit voice recorder, flight data recorder. they want to get back to washington asap, so they can at least get a preliminary read of both the cbr and fdr. that will give the investigators at least a direction to follow, while they're on scene, in san francisco. so those are the two priorities right now. >> greg, you mentioned the subject matter experts. and we heard from

ntsb oversees that. the airline has to provide services to the passengers, but the real teeth in that law is with the ntsb. that's all federal regulation in the united states. they have duties for the passengers, in addition to the duties they perform going through the wreckage and gathering all the data and analyzing that cockpit voice recorder. the ntsb is unbelievably busy on the site with things the public doesn't see. >> the chairwoman was speaking in that last bit of sound you heard there. it was from the cockpit voice recorder. there are two hours, very good quality. those two hours include the last part of that. they were clear to ran runway 28-l. the flaps were at 30 degrees. gear was down. 137 knots below that everything was normal. then they call for an increase of speed seven seconds prior to impact. then the sound of the shaker? >> stick shaker. >> four seconds prior to impact. then about 1.5 seconds before impact they call for a go around. then after she spoke about the cockpit voice record

there is a lot of work with the ntsb to do. we can only imagine that the runway will be shut down for the next three or four days. i can tell you that planes have been coming and going. it will help alleviate some of the traffic that has been backed up. we will continue to monitor these situations. >> tonight we are joined by an aviation expert. he has flown in and out of san s f o thousands of times and was also a jet fighter pilot. we just heard breaking news that this pilot had only flown into this was his first time. is this realistic? >> i doubt that it was his first time. it could possibly be his first time as a captain of the 777. and >> we also heard that he had 43 hours. and thousands of hours as a pilot but only 43 hours as a boeing 77 pilot. >> as a boeing, 777 pilot. >> it is like driving a car and if you have a ford, or persons driving a chevy i do not know if that is really a factor also, there was a co- pilots on this point, 777. >> i think that everybody is wondering is that there are on visual approach it was a

"today in the bay's" bob redell spoke to the ntsb chairman. he joins us live in south san francisco with new details. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning, laura. we spoke with the ntsb chairman who has her operations headquarters at this hotel in south san francisco, specifically trying to get a better sense of why that pilot waited 90 seconds before ordering the evacuation of asiana flight 214. just after it crashed saturday morning, a flight attendant knocked on the cockpit door, asked the pilot if they should start evacuating the aircraft. he said no, tell the passengers to stay calm and in their seats. it wasn't until another flight attendant notified them that a fire was starting outside the window around row 10 that he ended up ordering the evacuation of the airplane. the ntsb said the pilot might not have initially realized how serious this crash had been, hence the delay in ordering the evacuation. >> people seated in the back had a very different experience with respect to the crash forces and the damage that was in their com

we know at this very moment they're at the ntsb lab, and we know that simply because the ntsb has shared pictures online of the actual flight recordings inside of the lab. so, we're working to turn that around for you. but i can tell you that the analysis of the data that is happening as we speak, they're tryi ining to pull that data of. that's already happening. on the flight data recorder, that holds information like altitude, the speed, the position of the plane. and the cockpit voice recorder is capable of picking up things like the background noises and any warning signals that may have gone off, candy. >> what else is critical to these investigators as they try to figure out what went on? >> well, we know that they're also going to look at things like human performance, specifically those four pilots who were on board. they're going to be looking at their training. did they follow all of the procedures? any possibility of fatigue? because remember, this flight was more than ten hours long, an international flight. they're also going to look at blood and alcohol tests. and the fligh

it looks like -- ntsb said the same thing. looks like the landing gear may have hit first, hitting the jetty that separates the bay from the actual runway. that could have caused the plane to go up. there's a lot of other speculation here. we won't know until the investigation goes forward. it could be pilot error. could be mechanical. it does appear that landing gear hit first. why so many people were able to see this unlike other airports in the country, one, obviously people in the terminal can look out the window and see. but here in san francisco, san mateo, the hills are very close here and look right down on the runway, right down on the airport. it's one of the selling features for many of the homes here that you can look out over the bay across to oakland but also see all the planes coming in, taking off at san francisco. >> that's not a sight you would expect to see, certainly. but they will get answers by examining where everything is at this point. about the injuries, adam, it is truly a miracle, as you said, that

the ntsb had a press conference this afternoon. kpix has more on what the pilots were doing seconds before the impact. >> the flight data and cockpit voice recorders have given investigators a lot of crews. now, the so-called black boxes were recovered in tact. soon after the crash landing. and ntsb investigators escorted by u.s. marshals took them to the lab. they heard what happened in the critical, final seconds, seven seconds before impact one of the crewmembers called for more speed. the plane was going dangerously slow. then four seconds before crashing the sound of a stick shaker is heard. it is activated and 1 1/2 seconds before impact to avoid crashing a crewmember called for a go around. ntsb chief investigator explains. >> the approach speed was 137 knots and the question was whether or not we had the lowest speed that the crew achieved. i will tell you that the speed significantly below 137 knots. and we are not talking about a few knots. we still have to look at the information. it was a preliminary read of the recorde

bob, you had a chance to talk to the ntsb chairman now. the question, what is she saying about the pilots not being tested for drugs or alcohol after the crash? >> reporter: good morning, jon. we spoke with ntsb chair hersman about that issue, why those pilots were not drug and alcohol tested after the crash of asiana flight 214. she tells us that it's up to the airline's policy as to whether or not that happened. she does not know if policy was followed saturday morning. that is something she tells us the ntsb is still trying to understand. ntsb investigators headquarter at the hotel here in south san francisco are also trying to understand why the auto throttle was not working during final approach. the two pilots at controls of the 777 told investigators they thought the auto throttle was armed and maintaining a steady 137 knots, the minimum speed necessary for safe landing. question, why did they not notice this was in the the case, they were in fact too low and too slow, dangerously so? because it turns out they might have been distra

the ntsb has a team on the way. the fbi is also assigned to investigating why this plane went down at around 11:35 this afternoon local time, breaking apart, losing its tail, and filling with smoke, causing two people to lose their lives. eyewitness accounts ver vary ga. some say the plane seemed to cartwheel. others say the pilot seem to overshoot the runway. determining exactly why this plane crashed the way it did could take weeks, possibly months. in the meantime, greta, back here at san francisco international airport and we're in the international terminal, airport operations are starting to resume very slowly on a very limited basis. we have two of the four runways here reopened, but one runway is going to be closed for certainly a significant amount of time. we have a very wide and broad debris field. that is where these ntsb investigators and federal agents with the fbi will be going to collect these pieces. they're going to look for those black boxes. they're going to be talking to people on board the plan

what is ntsb saying this morning? >> we have a good view of the wreckage and the investigators working. what they are doing out there -- they have a big box out there. i asked about that. they said it is a trailer full of equipment. that is how they got the equipment out there. they are using g.p.s. on the runway to help locate all of the debris. the ntsb posted this picture of the chairman and investigator in charge, bill english, on the runway, discussing the progress. we asked her when they would move the wreckage and re-open the runway. >> we are certainly talking days, hopefully not talking weeks. we need to allow our folks to do the work and the salvage operation will be significant. >> today they plan to finish documenting the debris on the runway and along the seawall. then they will move to the plane. they will finish their conversations with the pilot and interview airport personnel with respect to the emergency response. we hope to talk to the cab ben crew about evacuation and deployment. >> investigators u

the ntsb is extremely methodical. they have developed an international reputation for being very precise and not engaging in hyperbole. they will spend a good deal of time looking at all the evidence and collecting all the evidence from the human activity inside the plane, including the pilots and the crew, the air traffic control tapes, the flight data recorder, the cockpit voice recorder. they'll look at the air frame, the history of the plane, the engines, the engine maker. this will go on and on and on, and they will not draw any conclusions until they do a final board meeting, as greg mentioned, in 12 to 18 months. that said, this is a very transparent organization. they will generally release what they know when they know it. so if they know for example in about two days or so precisely what the flight data recorder is telling them in terms of the approach angle, if you will, the line of attack, then they may release that. and then you'll get all of us using that information to try to speculate. we will generall
