john, i want to start with you. talk about these misconceptions that still exist about rape and who the rapist is. >> yeah, there's still a lot of misconceptions out there. and if we can't overcome some of these, simple things like when i say rapist, the image in somebody's head is somebody jumping out of a bush. but the vast majority of these cases are non-stranger from intimate partner down to an equatance. if we can't get over those humps it makes it really difficult to make these cases. the vast majority of rape victims never come forward. and when somebody has the courage to come forward, we need to start out by believing them. >> eleanor you are the survivor of an attack at knife point, tell us about your story. >> my story comes from [ inaudible ] i was walking home late one night, and i noticed there was a man behind me, and i got nervous, and i pulled out my cell phone ready to call 911, but before i was able to do that, he put a knife to my throat, and ended up taking my phone from me. and [ inaudible ] an

let's in attention, vice president biden, john kerr i and other national security staff. it was thought that he would be hard for him to get support from his long-time critics, including john baner, but john boehner came out in support of the president. >> nato is not likely to take action. the united states for our entire history has stood up for democracy and freedom for people around the world. the use of these weapons has to be responded to, and only the united states has the capability and the capacity to stop assad, and to warn others around the world that this type of behavior is not going to be tolerated. this is something that the united states as a country needs to do. i'm going to support the president's call for action. i believe that my colleagues should support this call for action. >> reporter: now while john boehner believes his colleagues should support the president's call for action, later his press secretary released a statement saying mr. boehner intended to support the president himself, but that he would leave it to other members of the house, repub

so in that context john, is it really that big of a deal? >> yeah, let's put it in a couple of different ways to look at that. first of all the reported incidents are only times when people are absolutely sure that a problem was caused by a dietary supplement but most people don't know. when they come down with an illness or reaction the last thing they might believe is that a dietary supplement caused this. because a dietary supplement is worthless or harmful. is if one person dies of listeria because of a problem that's front page news, and this is quite scary in my mind. but look what we know for a fact is that th alphabet vitamins are made in china, we know that they are not regulated, we know that good manufacturing practices are not being followed by the bulk of the industry, the clip early on where the senator said modeled vitamins, they actually cause, cancer, cause problems. we know that many of these vitamin supplements that they cause drug interactions, there's no requirement at all for a manufacturer that knows that their supplem

john kerry has started speaking. let's listen to what he's saying. >> i'm particularly grateful to sergei lavrov, who stayed extra time from what he had originally planned hoping we would finish sooner. this gave us additional opportunity to be able to work through some of the issues. i especially want to thank the cooperative effort of sergei lavrov who has worked hard, and his entire delegation, including teams of the world's foremost chemical weapons experts who have joined us here for the important discussions we've had over the last two days. two weeks ago president obama made the decision that because of the agregious use of chemical weapons in syria against women and children all discriminately murdered in the night that claimed the lives of people trying to rescue people, he believed it was critical for the world to say, no more. the president made the difficult decision that after multiple warnings it was his decision that the time had come to take military action to deter future use of such weapons. he also

let's get you back to john terrett now. john, what has been the reaction so far, if you have been able to engage, and i believe you have, to the speech from iran's president? >> the reaction is if anybody thought this was going to be a vocalization of that op-ed piece that appeared in the "washington post" on friday then they were only partially right. i don't think this is a man who is going to be sitting down with president obama any time soon. but we did hear a very, very different sort of speech from the kind of speech we have had from the iranians in recent history of the un. no mention of israel directly as you were saying, no mention of the holocaust, none of the viciousness towards israel that we have heard in the past. but hassan rouhani did say there is no place in iran's doctrine for weapons of mass destruction. he said the zero-sum game is over meaning that era where countries go to the n-th degree for their political beliefs. and he did offer immediate nuclear talks. let's listen to a clip that illustrates how

john what can we expect today? >> reporter: we predicted from the outset this would be a newsies general assembly, and i have slept through a fair few of these general assemblies in the past, but not this one. this one had really made headlines. i want to tell you about the syria story first, because here is the resolution that the security council passed last night. this is the document that has gone to the hague in holland where it will be reviewed by those who will be responsible of taking away the chemical weapons. we're looking for a vote around 5:00, 6:00, or 7:00 this evening. that's where we are at regarding jair. and the mourn ministers who should have left today, many are hanging around. sergey lavrov for sure is hang around. he wants to be in the russian chair whenever the secure security council signs this into international law. and that could be today or if the it is delaid in the hague, it could be over the weekend. the other great story is that of course we now have that incredibly historic meeting

lynn, you said that john lewis' speech was railroad important to you. >> it was. he was not much older than i and just hearing him speak out in the spirit that that i believed in of really stepping forward and agitated and making sure that what was needed would happen. he -- i think he spoke to the young people that day. >> we have some hour questions let's go to her mel a for those. >> anna this question is directed specifically to you. do you feel different about yourself as an american for having. participated in the march and what still needs to change in the united states? >> i do feel different . i had a serves optimism. the news clips and headlines those days were horrendous when i went to the march then and today the takeaway is we have made progress but not close to being where they wei need to be. half a dozen people said to me over and over, we are still fighting the voting rights act battle. how can that be? so i think we have to work harder at it. i think we have made progress but we are not home. >> i want to leave you with one last picture. there is

john, a republican strategist, and president of quinn gillespie journalists. so congressional ratings are very low. but that is new nothing. does it matter? >> i think it tends to disengage people from the process, they decide these guys are all jerks. they are never going to be helpful, so people feel they don't have confidence that they can engage in the political process and see change in a meaningful way. and they may be right at this point. but it really doesn't help them feel like they are active citizens. >> there was a poll on american's thoughts on syria, and two to one people today that congress should have the say on whether the u.s. engages in military strikes. >> we have been joking that two out of three people said congress should be sent to syria, but it is true, they are concerned particularly about getting into a war, and having congress involved gives sort of more oversight to what the president right be doing. even on the people don't want us to go to syria. >> buzz it give the president more gravitas at this point? >> i think it makes it mu

the fact it now does not seem a slam dunk by any stretch with senator john mccain, that has to make it a little more difficult for the president to get people on board. >> reporter: as paul pointed out, yesterday house speaker john boehner surprised everyone when he said he supported the president's call for action. as paul points out, he didn't say he supported whatever the plan is going to be. therein lies the rub. the devil is in the tee tails, the plan. that's where they are now. we'll just have to wait and see. >> earlier, randall, we spoke with florida republican congressman trey radle that says he's not convinced to support the plan. listen. >> i'm a father of a 2-year-old boy, and there are children killed right now by the assad regime. we cannot make them based on raw emotion. we have to understand what is important for the united states america. i'm unconvinced we need to go in there. >> it would seem congressman radel is typical of the audience. he has to convince the constituents and the people he represents as well, and the congressman has really tough questions lined up f

>> good to see you john. the fed has been pumping money into the economy to the turn of $85 billion a month. they're buying bonds and these so-called mortgage backed securities and that's been what has kept these mortgage interest rates so low for so long. a lot of economists expect the fed to announce it's going to taper those purchases lower them down not put $85 billion into the economy but start putting less and less probably allowing interest rates to go a little bit higher. we know that's already started to happen. mortgage rates are above 4.5% now, that is a fulling person point higher than in spring. what folks are worried about is the effect that this pulling back or tapering back that the fed might announce on wednesday may have on the economy in general and more specifically on the housing market. >> but this tapering is not sudden is it? >> that's right, it's why they call it tapering, a scaling back of the quantitative easing, qe. 7.3% is well above where the fed says it wants it to be, around 6%

john kerry is expected here within a couple of hours, sergei later on in the day. it's i essentially like toy focs technical shape and storm of ridding syria of its chemical weapons arsenals and, that will focus essentially three areas to consolidate where exactly those weapons are stored and located over syria's territory. to take control over those weapons with a view to essential i destroying them. but,, of course, the civil war rages on in the country how will hundreds of scientists be i believe to enter in syria and establish the exact location to his essentially destroy the arsenal eventually. questions that they will be hammering out. we know that both men are traveling here with their own weapons inspector chemical weapons experts. so undoubtedly they will have something to say also, but i think more than anything, it's trust between syria and the united states and also the russians that is going to be key and all important as these talks progress. >> and indeed, that's one of the points i want to explore further. both sides as you say are coming in with th

john, what was the reaction to that letter? >> wry smiles all around, john. and raised eyebrows, because for years they have denied having chemical weapons, and all of a sudden writing a letter saying they want to be part of the convention against them. today the secretary general of the united nations ban ki-moon came out with a diplomatic rely, and says he welcomes the letter. now enter the picture, bashar jafari the very colorful syrian ambassador to the united nations, a man who takes a very long time to say anything and to make his point, but he came to the microphone to say the writing of that letter and sending it to the un means that syria is now a fully paid up member of the anti-chemical weapons club. take a listen. >> with this chapter of the so-called chemical weapons should be ended and legally speaking, syria has become, starting today, a full member of the convention. >> so john what are the chances syria will comply with the convention? >> it's a very good question, john. simply by sending that letter, it doesn't mean that syria has fully sign

good evening, john. >> reporter: good evening, john. it's been a bit on off on off throughout the day. we were told they had a resolution, and then they didn't, and finally we learned that a draft resolution, based on that geneva framework agreement had been agreed to strip syria of its chemical weapons stockpile, and right now in the building behind me here, un headquarters in manhattan, the full security council is meeting and discussing that documentation. we're not expecting a vote tonight, although the russian envoy is letting us know he hopes for a vote as early as friday evening. it may actually come later in the weekend. u.s. secretary of state john kerry has been personally involved in the negotiations behind the scenes here. let's take a listen to what he had to say on the apparent agreement. >> prior to this meeting, i was pleased to have a meeting with foreign minister sergey lavrov, and we did reach agreement with respect to the resolution. we're now doing the final work and pulling that language together. >> reporter: and

john what else can we expect? >> well, i think the real headline is going to come tomorrow, because the newly elected iranian president is now in town. he flew in this afternoon, and he is going to be addressing the general assembly tomorrow. and after that op-ed piece, i think it's fair to say that everyone is very much looking forward to hearing his words. president obama of course is also speaking tomorrow in the 10:00 hour eastern time. but clearly iran now, and syria are going to dominate this general assembly. it depends on what the president says tomorrow. regarding syria, for president obama and john kerry spending the rest of the week trying to nail down a security agreement. because right now they just have a framework, and they are looking for a security council resolution, and they can't get one. the problem is paperwork. there's a suspicion the russians are holding the process up somewhere, but in the meantime any process is stalled here in new york. >> all right. john at the united nations tonight. h

al jazeera's john terrett is live and john what did u.n. inspectors find on the ground in damascus? >> well, tony at last today those inspectors were able to publish their report into what happened in damascus on august the twument. and there was -- the 21st. there was a two and a half hour security council meeting, also attended by secretary-general exphoob. ban ki-moon. they were only asked whether chemical weapons were used on the 21st and as you just reported they have said they were. they also cleverly described how those chemicals were delivered. they were delivered by surface to surface rockets which they found to contain trace still of serin gas when they went to the wreckage on the ground. that's tantamount really without actually saying so, to pointing the finger of blame at the damascus government, tony. >> and john how soon will the u.n. security council vote on a resolution to strip syria of its chemical weapons? >> this is a very good question. it's important to understand. remember that agreement reached on saturday in geneva between john kerry and sergey lavrov, is a
