we've done some calculations that suggest that global tropical cyclone activity -- "tropical cyclone" is a generic name for a hurricane -- is what's doing this mixing. narrator: putting this theory to the test, emanuel has built hurricane models where the hurricanes control the heat flux in the oceans. these models may provide an explanation for the climate on earth 50 million years ago -- the time known as the eocene heat wave, when the temperatures in the tropics were about the same as they are today, but the poles were much warmer. this is when there were crocodiles wandering around greenland and alligators in london and places like that. and this is a great mystery. but we think it was a very stormy climate and there were a lot of hurricanes and that this was driving a fantastic poleward heat flux in the ocean which was responsible both for keeping the tropics relatively cool and for keeping the high latitudes warm. narrator: the idea that hurricanes are in some way driving the earth's climate complicates our understanding of how the climate system works, presenting new challenges

also, tropical depression expected to become a tropical storm moving to vietnam and indochina peninsula you'll be seeing heavy rain showers through the coming days. over towards the americas, remember last week, we had the severe flooding throughout much of colorado. good news, fair weather is working in. clear skies popping up overhead. but that heavy rain has shifted farther towards the east across the central plains. we'll be seeing rain showers out here. what's pushing it farther to the east is the strong southwesterly winds that are very dry across much of the desert southwest. we have fire weather warnings in place across much of utah, nevada, southern california, even portions of arizona. that really dry air pushing through here, sometimes gusting up to 80 kilometers per hour, will bring the risk of wildfires. if they do develop, they could spread rapidly. farther to the northeast, if you want cooler weather, these are the lows on tuesday. take a look at this, buffalo with a high of 4. toronto with a 4. new york, just getting down to 9. it's feeling very fall, almost winter-like

toward the americas, we first start off with a tropical depression, expected to become a tropical storm pull off to the northwest. but moving very, very slowly. and that is the key with the forecast of this storm. it's not expected to become a full-fledged hurricane, just remain tropical storm status. not a big wind event. but due to the fact it's monday into tuesday, it's still over open water, it will drop a heavy amount of rainfall near coastal areas here in the pacific, even extending to the mountains. actually in the pacific and gulf of mexico, this is where we'll be seeing this. in the pacific we have a new low pressure area that could become another storm system. a flood threat here, also continuing to watch the severe flooding in new mexico, out towards colorado. boulder, colorado, actual deaths confirmed at this time due to the severe flooding there with the moon sonsoon al moisture. it's going to taper off a little bit, but not too much of relief. severe thunderstorms rolling off towards new england into the canadian maritimes. behind it, high pressure is working its way in. a

. >> this is our next tropical system. it's tropical storm gabrielle, pushing out towards the island of bermuda. actually, impacting down toward puerto rico over the weekend. and late last week. but started to fall apart and dissipate, now you can see the cloud cover reorganizing here. tropical storm warnings are in effect for the island of bermuda. winds about 65 kilometers per hour. you could see one-meter high storms at high tide here. that is really the main impacts out of this. you'll also see the risk of heavy rainfall for the island here, about 50 to 150 millimeters, very well possible as this pushes overhead. right across the island. the good news is bermuda to withstand hurricanes. this is not expected to become a hurricane. don't really expect so much of these significant impacts out here. just wait for the storm to pass and improving weather behind it. farther to the west overlooking at the risk of flooding there to the southwest. the four corners region. we have the deep monsoonal moisture surging in from the p

i want to talk about the tropics. we have a new tropical depression starting to form in the south china sea and all of the infwreed yents are in place right here for the possibility of this developing into something bigger. we definitely want to keep a close eye on it, but the big topic is we have been seeing this continued monsoon flow and that has been bringing some devastating floods down here, deadly landslides, as well and this could make that situation worse, so definitely want to continue to keep an eye on this and even if it's not named it will bring the heavy rainfall with it. for the temperatures across, they're in the 30s and shanghai at 25 and seoul on thursday. let's take a look at the americas and what's going on in the pacific northwest. we have a low pressure area. some severe thunderstorms in the northern plains and behind it into the rockies we'll be seeing snowfall at 30 centimeters at some of the higher elevations is very well possible there. high pressure dominating much of the great lakes region

first we start in the tropics where there are tropical storms and hurricane. one of each. tropical storm. gabrielle is heading towards bermuda with two to four inches of rain. that will continue to push to the north. hurricane umberto is off the coast of africa, and that will stay off over the ocean not impacting land. as far a gabrielle, it will impt nova scotia and turning away from the east coast. boston is at 94, and it will not last, the heat is here today. but once the storms move through we'll see cooler air following that. the storms over the great lakes. we'll have a few more hours today with the heat, but tomorrow things change. all this heat moves to the southeast. montana and denver seeing temperatures drop quite a bit. what to see with the radar and the clouds, you see that line here. that will slowly move east pushing the hot air out and bringing nice comfortable air for the weekend. dropping over the northeast at 86 tomorrow with a shower or thunderstorms drying out friday, saturday, and sunday. needs to dry out in the southwest. more flash flooding possible

it's indicating we did see ugasi push on land as a tropical -- as a category 2 tropical storm. we will continue a north/northwest track as it makes its way north of hong kong. really by 3:00 o'clock in the morning, really local time, 3:00 p.m. here east he were time. we are going to continue to see that storm push towards the west where it will become a tropical system and a remnant low as we continue to look at this storm. look at how huge it is. it will make its way toward hong kong. we are expecting to see winds pick up around 3:00 o'clock in the morning, local time here in hong kong. historically, we had another storm as mentioned earlier in the live shot. we continue to see these storms track from the pacific across the strait into the south china sea but the last time this happened, really, at this magnitude was back in 1979. hong kong really does have to deal with this through the course of typhoon season that peekstically from june toward december, the most catastrophic typhoon, that is, that ever hit hong kong was in 1906 that killed 11,000 people. then we had the grea

this is still maintaining the intensity as severe tropical storm status. this is quite a fast moving system, but it's making a very erratic movement. it will be staying in japan for quite some time. packing up 126 kilometers per hour in the center of this. 122 kilometers per hour gusts have been reported already. and that's likely to continue. so the rough sea conditions as well as the tropical moisture is included in here and associated with a stationary boundary, which means that the storm system, the tropical moisture, the stationary band and cold air aloft will all make it a very unstable condition. we're talking cats and dogs for a few days. but this will be bringing more heavy rain on top of 400 millimeters that we've already had. but on top of that, 300 millimeters is possible just into thursday morning in the area. a lot of the areas are seeing more than 100 millimeters. any additional amounts could trigger flooding, landslides, mud slides. it's going to be a very high risk. so a lot is happening here. so due to the cold air aloft, quite a diversio

this is a tropical depression. it looks like it will be making landfall possibly in eastern vietnam. as a tropical depression status. this is already packing so much rainfall. about 300 millimeters or even more in some localized areas in vietnam having reported it. northern thailand already has seen 200 millimeters of rainfall from this system enhancing the southwestern monsoonal flow. more rain to be pounding the similar areas, so landslides, mudslides, flooding will be varied. a huge concern especially, and also storm surges. do stay away from any of these waters. to the north high pressure is covering much of the regions, and we're talking about a very clear sky. it is a perfect night to celebrate. the harvest moon. it's going to be a full moon too. it's quite rare for the full moon to be falling on the harvest moon day, and it's going to be about eight years later for the next full moon to be appearing on this day, so don't miss it. tokyo at 29 degrees. nothing autumn-like here reaching up to 36 here. new to eu

yes, very, very busy in the tropics at the moment. we're going to go first to some video coming out of vietnam. this is showing you what the situation was like earlier on today. typhoon, a typhoon then wutip. prior to landfall, the storm had already been blamed for the sinking of three chinese vessels causing 74 people to go missing in the south china sea. an estimated 61,000 fishing vessels heeded typhoon warnings. these are vessels from both vietnam and china, that went back into port ahead of the storm. authorities have also evacuated thousands of people in vietnam from low-lying areas. and regions prone to landslides. this typhoon wutip is the strongest storm to hit vietnam since 2006. so that was the situation earlier on. it is no longer a typhoon. we now have a severe tropical storm. that's what happens after making landfall. we see the system start to downgrade, start to dissipate and lose their strength. if we take a look at the winds here, you can see it's still a strong, potent system. winds at 108 kilometers. it hasn't real

we are seeing lots of tropical storms. last week, we talked about typhoon that was usagi which affected southern taiwan. the northern philippines and southern china with floods and this time we have a severe tropical storm first south of japan. this is causing lots of rain and strong winds too the ogasawa islands as we go into tomorrow. as a severe tropical storm, it's going to maintain its intensity, but the good news is that it's not going to make landfall in mainland swjapan. it's not going to produce lots of rain to mainland swra pjapan coastal areas will see high waves and rough seas as well and winds could be a little bit stronger. now, talking about the remnants of usagi, it's now located over southern china. it has weakened. however, it's still packing a lot of moisture to cause heavy rainfall. we're expecting more than 100 millimeters of rain to fall into the next 244 hours. in the line of thundershowers, from this area through the korean peninsula, up into the hokkaido area. now, across the americas, we're lookin
