obviously retaliation for the raid and siege at the mall in nairobi, there have been developments on that story. the military has started to name names. what are the details? >> that's right, steven. first of all, the unofficial release through sources firstly through the kenyan media, then others of the video showing the four gunman in a storeroom in the supermarket looking quite casual, at time sharing the time about five hours after the initial attack in most of the killing, no sign of any hostages. now we have names given by the kenyan defense force, it's spokesman giving these names. a somali, and omar neban, known company item from the district here, where he left 16 years of age. sources suggest he left with his uncle to go to somalia. he is a kenyan arab. we understand from the united nations monitoring group that he may well have been related to the most wanted al-qaeda operative in the east african region. he was killed in 2009 in a strike led by u.s. navy seals. furthermore, the u.n. monitoring group also knows of two more names, they are apparently part opartof the al hid

hundreds of protestors gathered in nairobi, marching to police headquarters. in june, six men attacked the girl known in the media as liz in the town and then threw her into a pit used as a latrine. a day later, the community handed three of the men to police. as punishment, the men were told to cut the grass at the police compound and sent home. the rape was not reported in kenya media until october when doctors treating the girl went public. a few weeks later, she had spinal surgery and now needs to use a wheelchair and is still undergoing treatment. we were sent this update from the heart of the protest in nairobi. >> this is a complaint for accountability and an end to the impunity in which women are raped across kenya. this is an outrage of the punishment to young men who gang raped a girl who is 16 years old. they are here to present a petition signed by 1.2 million people to the inspector general of police. now, the inspector general has told the media in the past forth eight hours that they have arrested the six men who gang raped the girl who is known

new picturessive of the devastation inside of nairobi's westgate mall, the scene of a siege by militants. the pictures appear to show the aftermath, damage, looting. >> cameras are still not allowed inside the west gate. we have obtained these new pictures that give a sense of the terror shoppers faced that saturday afternoon as they fled through the core doors of the complex, pursued by armed attackers. shop owners have been allowed in to retrieve what is left of their merchandise. the destruction they found inside was not just to the aftermath of the battle, looters had been at work here also cleaning out shops, currency exchange offices come it even parking machines. some have blamed the looting on security forces. a committee of mps will try to establish whether the attack could have been prevented and whether the subsequent security operation was mishandled. a number of attackers probably used this sewage tunnel to make their way out of the shopping center and escape according to one security official that i spoke to was involved. he said some of them might already be in somalia. th

cracking down on muslims because of al shabaab's recent attack on a shopping mall in nairobi. meanwhile a new video has been released as andrew simmons reports. >> for the first time, images that identify some of the westgate mall attackers. one gunman walks through what appears to be a store of a supermarket, join by a second and then a third man. the closed circuit video gives this as 10 past 5:00, five hours after the attack. the men appear almost casual. another clip shows the checkout on the ground floor. some signs of the commotion earlier with one attacker not appearing to be on his guard, strolling towards the cash desk. and there are still images in the clips, unofficially released and passed on to kenyan media. but while they may identify some of the attackers they don't give any insight into what happened to remaining civilians or how the siege came to an end with the collapse of this part of the building. the video emerged after a day of rioting after kenya's port city of mombasa, and police used live rounds as demonstration at a mosque turned into a riot. protesto

last night, we brought you the news that one of the gunmen in the nairobi mall attack has been identified as hassan abdi dhuhulow, a norwegian national of somali origin. at the scene of the assault, three bodies were pulled out. authorities say it is highly likely two of them were the attackers. will ross has the latest. >> the moment of sheer terror when the gunmen strolled in, firing at random shot -- women andmen, children, hiding whatever they thought they might be safe. here, one of the gunmen calmly shoots a man. another returns to fire a second shot. traces of bullets can be seen, and intense fear can be seen on the faces of those caught up in the habit. even injured children are taken away at gunpoint to be held hostage. the gunman appeared composed. lay down took time to their guns when it was time for muslim prayers. part of the building collapsed during the siege. almost four weeks on, charred bodies are being found. the bbc has learned that three bodies have been pulled out. the head of the committee investigating the attack told me that two of the bodies were likely to be tho

let's speak to our correspondent peter who joins us from the kenyan capitol nairobi so peter what is next now for the deputy president? >> well, he says he will stay in the hague. this is going to quite some problems and arguments back here. icc has been under enormous political pressure not just from kenya but from the entire african union. the african union betrayed the icc as a near colonial constitution persecuting african leaders and will lend weight to the argument. we can expect to see attention focused on the un security council which is to consider a resolution by the african union asking the security council to put off both trials until both of kenya's president and ruto has left office and that is a controversial move and that is where the focus will be for the diplomatic and political efforts here in africa. >> reporter: how do you see this affecting kenya's ties with the rest of the african neighbors? >> this is an interesting one. i think there is now enormous pressure on both william ruto and kinyata to somehow withdraw from the icc. they have a difficult line because

al jazeera's correspondent sent us this update from the heart of the protest in nairobi. >> this is a complaint for accountability and the end to women being raped across kenya. this is against it punishment meted out against young men who raped a girl, 16 years old. they are here to present a petition signed by 1.2 million to the inspector-general of police. now, the media has been told in the past 48 hours that the six men have been arrested who gank raped the girl known as liz to the media. activists who are here told us that they have been in touch with the family, with people who live in the area where liz comes from, and the arrests have not happened. they are calling on the inspector general of police to arrest the men and make sure they face the charge of rape. they are calling the act of asking the men to cut grass and being released as the worst punishment for rape in the world. this is not the only case of rape in this country. it's a widespread problem in this country. it took the courage of the doctor who treated her for a broken back, and a medical condition of fistula w

peter has been monitoring the court ruling and has more for us now from the kenyan capitol nairo nairobi. >> reporter: they had to deal with when the trial judges have the authority in principle to give the accused the rights to be excused from part of their trial. on that score they found the appeal, the trial judges were right to consider his request to be excused but that they overstepped the authority and granting what amounted to a blanket excusel. the trial judges said that he could be excused from appearing throughout most of the trial apart from certain key parts of it but the appeals judges say that was too much and said that, in fact, the trial judges should be allowed to adjust their court calendars and should be allowed to grant adjourn ms for brief periods for specific circumstances when william ruto has to come back to kenya to deal with certain crisis and certain official duties. generally what it means is william ruto must be present for the entire duration of his trial in principle and that only from time to time will he be allowed to come back. >> reporter: he was tippe
