diane macedo joins us now with more on this story. >> we keep hearing about how the u.s. economy is in recovery but that isn't having much of an impact on food stamp enrollment. according to the department of agriculture enrollment in the supplemental assistance program first hit 47 million back in august of 2012. since then the markets are up the unemployment rate is down and yet the department's most recent figures show enrollment in august of 2013 actually climbed to nearly 48 million. that is way up from the less than 32 million people enrolled in the program when the president took office in january of 2009. that year people also started getting as much as 13.6 percent more in food stamps as part of the federal economic stimulus package. that increase expired last week which will save the government about $5 billion next year. we will see if that has any impact on the number of people enrolled in it the program. for now the current number means that nearly 1 out of every 7 americans left food stamps. >> thanks, diane. the time now is about 15 minutes until the top of
