nbc10's harry hairston live tonight in darby, delaware county. >> we heard from the baby's father and the police chief about this terrifying incident. how is the baby doing tonight? >> reporter: as well as expected. part of the baby's face was chewed by three ferrets, the family's ferrets. this has been a very difficult time for everyone. the child now at children's hospital philadelphia in stable condition. this all happened yesterday at this home right behind me in the 300 block. it happened 3:30 in the afternoon, according to investigators. they tell us the child was left in a car seat on the first floor of the home while the mother had gone upstairs to use the rest room. and then she heard screaming. it took a while, according to police, before the mother got downstairs and found the ferrets attacking the child and then started to throw the ferret as way from the baby. police say the parents and their five children aged 1 month to 5 years, all lived here and all have special needs. police telling us that the home was also full of fleas and mites. the other pets in the home, six ca

. >>> it was a close call for police on 69th street in upper darby delaware county tonight. that's where "eyewitness news" reporter diana rocco is live with details. diana? >> reporter: jessica quite a chaotic scene when police were conducting a raid on the suspect suspect, he ran and went right for police officer. philadelphia man is in jail after trying to run down an upper darby police officer on 69th street friday afternoon. the female officer pulled her gun. >> she fires one shot at the vehicle. the shot enters through the window of the vehicle. the vehicle then knocks over two or three parking meters. we had him boxed in we thought but he drove right up on to the sidewalk. >> reporter: police were conducting a raid on the suspect who sold drugs to uncovers on four separate occasions. he got away jumping in his car and ramming the front door of a furniture store then begunking for the officer. police pulled him out of the car where the window was shot out. inside bundles of heroin and semi-automatic weapon much on the suspect they found thousands in heroin and crack. >>

we begin with a shooting involving police. >> reporter: we are on 69th in upper darby. the chief tells me this was a drug raid that quickly turned violent. can you see the black sedan detectives are focusing on. this is the suspect's car. police were moving in to arrest this drug suspect when he started to try to attempt to run over some of these undercover officers. can you see this car is literally sitting here in the sidewalk. we can tell that it knocked over at least a few traffic poles, slammed into a building on the side breaking the window. now, police tell me as this suspect was trying to run over the officer, one of the female undercover officers fired one shot missing the suspect. let me let the chief of police explain what happened on this sidewalk. >> she runs up on the sidewalk crashes into the side of a building. then he backs up and tries to run over one of our upper darby undercover officers female officer. >> reporter: now, none of the officers were injured. that suspect was not injured either. he was taken into custody immediately following this violen

police say the infant's mother put her in a car seat inside a home in darby borough. she left that girl on the ground while she went upstairs. that's when three ferrets got out of their cages and attacked the child. the baby has severe injuries to 25 percent of her face. vernon odom will have a live report including an interview with the child's father. that's coming up at 4:30. >> an 11-year-old girl was can killed in a crash this morning in philadelphia's east oak lane neighborhood. according to police a ford mustang crossed over into oncoming traffic near cheltenham avenue and old york road around 8:15. that is when it hit -- it was hit by a minivan. the 11-year-old was a passenger in the mustang. she was pronounced dead at the hospital. police say her mother was driving the mustang at the time. both she and the minivan's driver were hospitalized. >> well, this is tom wolf's third day as pennsylvania's governor. he's making significant waves. the democrat removed more than two dozen of tom corbett's appointees from their posts this week. corbett made the appointmen

this all happened, according to investors at this home behind me in darby late yesterday afternoon. police say once they got into the house, they found there were five children in there. aged between 1 month and 5 years old. they also found fleas, mites, three ferrets, six cats two dogs, and a lot of food for the animals but they say nearly nothing for the children to eat, only peanut butter and cranberries. we are told the child was inside this house in a car seat when all of a sudden the baby started screaming. the mother came down i'm told by one of the parents and saw a ferret was on top of the child. picked it up and tossed it away. the police chief tells me this was something very hard for him to symptom. to stomach. >> this is the most horrific thing i've seen happen to a child in 45 years in this town. these kids need to be prekedotected, all five of them. it's not that their bad parents, it's just -- the children resident being taken care of. >> reporter: now, we're also told all five children have special needs. and police say the parents have special needs as well. we did
