casey: thank you. ms. hannon: a couple of quick highlights -- a more flexible workforce, arrangements, because workers want autonomy and they want to be able to work from home. it doesn't cost more to retrofit your office. if you can do that, commitment to the community college system. if there is any way we could build on what they are offering today, that is great. there was a wonderful consortium recently in a new york city with universities around the country trying to figure out how can we deal with this segment of our population that needs education, which we have ignored for years? it is not the young people, it is the old folks. we need programs for them. finally, the idea making financing easier for senior entrepreneurs to have access to that. a lot of people in this age group do want to start their own business and it is hard to get loans for. mr. godwin: as senator kaine knows, we have a high percentage of veterans in virginia. it benefits the older populations as well. sen. collins: thank you.

casey is msnbc's political correspondent. and casey, it looks like hillary has taken the stage there, the first of the candidates to go. what is the event there tonight? >> reporter: well, chris, this is the annual wing ding event that the democratic party throws a to the surf ballroom, which, of course, you may know for being the last venue buddy holly ever played before he was killed in that plane crash. and this is a regular famous stop for democratic politicians lang the way, and this is a rare opportunity for us to see hillary clinton, bernie sanders, martin o'malley and even lincoln chafee all together in the same room at the same time, talking to the same crowd, a chance to compare them all against each other. as we were coming in, you had noisy groups, competing groups of hillary supporters and o'malley supporters. the o'malley supporters were particularly noisy, i will say, compared to my experience with him yesterday at the fair, where most people were trailing behind the few cameras and boom mics that are following

we begin with casey greene on the 1900 storm that decimated galveston. ♪[music]♪ >> the 1900 storm struck galveston saturday, september 8 1900. the storm began at noon increased in dramatic intensity and then finally tapered off toward midnight that evening. this hurricane was and still is the deadliest recorded natural event in the history of the united states. the destruction totaled about $28 to $30 million. certainly it was a destructive hurricane. there was major damage. but the death toll was why we remember the storm more than anything. it can happen again. saturday september 1900, people thronged to the beach. and the rising tide, the rising wind certainly drew them. they watched in amazement as pottboth of these physical factors battered the beach structures. at that time we had wooden bath houses out over the gulf of mexico. and we also had piers and we even had a huge pavilion called olympia by the sea. as the storm increased in intensity, these beap beach structures literally were turned into mashed decks by the hurricane. the problem is,

i'm libby casey. antonio mora is on assignment. we begin with the massive explosion in northeast china, all out rescue effort is under way. chinese president xi jinping is calling for a investigation in the port city of ti rarvetionnjin. meanwhile these are some of the images of the aftermath of the explosion. the area resembles a post apocalyptic scene. authorities say they expect the number of casualties to rise in the coming hours. adrian brown filed the report from nearby beijing. >> this is an incident continuing, according to the local authorities the force of the first blast equaled more than 3 tons of tnt, and the second blast more than 21 tons of tnt so a huge blast. some residents say they felt like it was an earthquake. many people perhaps as many as 300 have been taken to hospital. there have been a number of deaths. now authorities stress they believe this was simply an industrial accident, nothing more serious than that but we have to put this into context. industrial accidents like this
