. >> our correspondent barbara starr joins us now. you have new information about the u.s. operation that killed him. >> we're now just learning from our sources here at cnn that when u.s. special operations forces moved in, this happened in syria, their goal that time was to try to take qaduli alive. they were going try to capture him and interrogate him for whatever intelligence he had. he would have had plenty being the so-called finance minister of isis. we're told something went wrong during that effort. when u.s. helicopters moved in, special operation commandos on board. qaduli was in a vehicle below. something happened. it made them unable to take him alive. some kind of fire fight by all accounts breaking out. when it was all over, qaduli was dead. some of the most dangerous work for u.s. special op rags forces. i mean, just think about it. they're going behind enny lines. enemy lines. there are no friendly forces on the ground in syria that would be welcoming to u.s. forces. this was a very high-risk mission. something done by the most highly trained forces in the

let's get right to barbara starr. she is live at the pentagon. barbara, how much do we know about how much this guy has been talking? >> well, supposedly talking a fair bit. captured and interrogated by the pentagon's supposedly secret expeditionary targeting force. this is a group of 200 forces operating in northern iraq ready to go into syria with the goal of capturing key isis operatives when they can and interrogating them for intelligence. they got this guy about three weeks ago. they have been interrogating him ever since. he is said to be by u.s. officials a top official in isis' chemical weapons program. they interrogated him for everything he knew and then began to carry out a series of limited air strikes against isis' suspected chemical sites. chemical sites associated with mustard agent. something that isis has used in the past in both iraq and syria against civilians. the u.s. wanted to get these targets, not clear yet how much of the chemical capability they really destroyed, jim. >> so another story, what can you tell us about an a

let's begin with our pentagon correspondent, barbara starr. barbara, the search has been stepped up, the investigation much more urgent right now. what's the latest? >> wolf, tonight u.s. counterterrorism and intelligence officials are racing to figure out where the next threats may be coming from, racing to figure out what isis is up to. multiple isis plots in europe on the radar, possibly linked to the paris and brussels networks. they are in various stages of planning. a combination of electronic intercepts, human sources and database tracking indicate several possible targets had been picked out by the isis operatives over the last few months. since the attacks earlier this week, information found in a raided apartment, including maps, indicated other potential targets had been chosen. across belgium, the manhunt now on for two suspects still unidentified. this man on the right at the airport dressed in beige clothing is one. a second suspect spotted on surveillance holding a large bag at the subway blast. not clear if he is dead or on the

let's bring in barbara starr. barbara, what do you think -- why do you think trump released this statement reversing apparently totally reversing his position on the use of torture? >> well, look at what's been happening the last several days, wolf. trump has been talking about waterboarding in fairly general terms. but last night he really shifted ground on this. he basically said he would order it and that the u.s. military, the troops, will do what they're told, that they would not refuse him. but this is potentially setting up a huge battle between -- you know, if he became commander in chief and the troops he commands because waterboarding is illegal under u.s. law and international law. if troops get an illegal order even from a commander in chief, they are obligated to refuse it. if they can't carry out their orders, they have to next face the possibility of resigning from the u.s. military. one official i talked to early this morning after listening to the debate last night said he believed there could be

let's get right to barbara starr live at the pentagon. barbara, what can you tell us about this mission? >> good afternoon, jake. this is a very odd air strike. a mix of unmanned drones and manned fighter jets attacking this training camp 120 miles north of mogadishu killing, according to the pentagon, about 150 militants on the ground. but this is an unusual place for al shabab to operate and unusual for them to put that many people in one place. the pentagon says they have been watching the camp for several weeks and the intelligence showed them, at least, that these people were in the midst of planning an attack and they believe they ended an imminent threat against the small number of u.s. troops in somalia and the african peacekeepers also there. a bit of a surprise because al shabab has been back on its heels in recent months and years, however more recently, of course, al shabab, the group said to be involved in the recent attack that brought down a commercial airliner. also other attacks in and around somalia. this is a group that

so let's get you straight to the pentagon, to our correspondent barbara starr for the latest on both of these developing stories. barbara, first to this air strike. tell me what you know. >> hi, brooke what we do know is that on march 4th, the u.s. was targeting abu omar al shashani, also known as omar the chechen, a top isis leader. u.s. air strikes moved in over the town of sadati, the area between the syria -- on the syria/iraqi border, a town isis often uses as a border crossing. fighting had been heavy in that area. we don't know what intelligence the u.s. had that drew them there, thinking that shashani was there, but they did target him there. now, u.s. intelligence agencies and the u.s. military are looking at the results of the strike, trying to determine once and for all if they did get him. that is often very difficult to know from air strikes, if you don't have troops on the ground, it may be difficult to know if you were successful in exactly killing the person you were going after. but clearly they were going after him. top operative, $5 million reward on his head by th

let's go to pentagon correspondent barbara starr. what are you learning about the situation on the ground? >> wolf, tonight the u.s. military is targeting very crucial, very specific areas around raqqah and mosul. but as the old saying goes, it's getting complicated. on the battlefields of iraq and syria, isis is losing key ground, suffering crucial setbacks. >> in recent weeks, coalition forces have severed the main artery between isis power centers in rauc assyria and isil in northern iraq. and begun the early stages to collapse isil's control over mosul. >> reporter: the u.s. exploitsing what advantages it can like the daring killing of the finance chief mustafa al qaduli. u.s. special operations forces on helicopters flew at a very low altitude in front of qaduli's car firing warning shots to stop. when an occupant leaned out to fire with an ak-47 back at the helico helicopters, the u.s. team quickly obliterated the car. >> the pressure we put on isil has degraded their capabilities and reduced their resources. >> reporter: but t

barbara starr is joining me now from the pentagon. a lot of activity in somalia. i wonder if this is a direct response with an explosion at an airport. luggage apparently hidden, laptops that were bombs. we had a flight out of the airport in somalia that blew up because a laptop exploded. a lot of al shabaab claims of responsibility for this kind of terrorist action. is that what this is following? >> well, it certainly is following it. there have been a number of very resurgent attacks, as you say, by the al shabaab group in somalia in the recent weeks. what the pentagon announced to reporters a short time ago is that on saturday they did a drone strike against a suspected al shabaab camp, north of mogadishu. they say there were about 200 fighters there, and they were in the final stages of an imminent attack against u.s. troops and african peace keeping troops in somalia. the u.s. keeps a small number of troops at an airport in mogadishu and they go other places in the country to conduct assistance efforts, working with the african forces there. that presence is

i want to get over to our pentagon correspondent, barbara starr. this came from your reporting, all of this even before the secretary of defense came out, and i thought your question to him was so important when you said if he says this man would have been involved with external plots as the secretary said, does that mean he would have to at least have some knowledge of or some involvement plots like paris and brussels? >> well, plots like them. this is what the intention community is looking at right now as you see these cells emerge in europe. how do they trace back to sort of the head quarters elements of isis in syria and iraq? who is inspiring these cells? who is directing them? the secretary indicated, i think, what many u.s. officials believe right now which is it's a mix. some of these operatives in europe are directly perhaps under some type of orders. maybe not time tadate and placef where to attack, but at least some direction, go forth and launch attacks. s some of them inspired by others and come back to europe. this is a very long ter

starr live with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. those sanctions, of course, aimed at crippling north korea's ability to develop weapons, but right now the you're right. the rhetoric is extremely high out of pyongyang. the u.s. feels it's due to regular exercises. two of them underway. they won't wind up until the end of april. we're potentially in for several weeks of hot het rick out of the north. the u.s., the exercises are aimed at demonstrating the u.s. commitment to the defense of south korea. so what's the assessment? what is kim jong-un really up to with all this talk? clearly the u.s. view is that they hope it's just talk. but there's a lot of concern. the north koreans recently conducted an underground nuclear test. they launched a satellite that gave them the ability to test the equivalent on a long range missile. they're sensitive about the sanction. you have all three things coming together in the north korean regime. from the u.s. point of view, they're watching carefully right

let's get to barbara starr. what are the details you're learning? >> wolf, tonight the administration trying to assess what's really going on. if russia moves ahead and does withdraw its troops from syria, the next question what will that mean for the ability of bashar al assad to hang on to power? a stunning announcement from russian president vladimir putin. >> translator: i believe our armed forces have fulfilled the goals we set. that's why i have ordered the ministry of defense starting tomorrow to begin the pull out of the main part of our military forces from syria. >> reporter: but there is more than meets the eye. putin says two bases in syria will continue to operate. the naval base at tarius and the air baas at latakia. the underground fuel tanks signal a long-term operation for air strikes and resupplying the assad regime. the syrian president now in a much stronger position after months of bombing opposition and civilian targets by moscow to shore up his once teetering regime. the regime able to participate in peace talks in geneva now

i want to bring in our barbara starr. would was this man, what are you learning about this last-minute change? as you know, they wanted him alive. >> well, that's right, erin. this is a guy the u.s. wanted so badly they were willing to send u.s. special operations forces into syria. very dangerous business. we're told that they went in by helicopter. they were targeting him. they wanted to be able to capture him alive. as isis fins minister, he would have had a lot of intelligence, they believe. they wanted to interrogate him, find out what he knew about the operation, where other operatives might be. but it didn't work out. and the pentagon, not offering a lot of detail about this covert operation. we know that when the helicopters got overhead and were targeting the vehicle, that he was in, something changed. we don't know what that was. the helicopters could not land. something happened and they had to open fire, killing him and others in the vehicle. so they believe very strongly they got him and that he's dead in tha
