i respect kellyanne conway enormously. but i would say that steve bannon, his tactics almost undo what it is that she's there to do. i wouldn't be surprised if we saw trump going off teleprompter a little, as well, too. that's something that shored up his base. i don't think it plays as well in the general election crowd. i don't think we'll have teleprompter don for the next 80 days. >> rick, your thought on the new shakeup or structure of the campaign? >> look, i think it's a -- definitely a big shakeup. i think jessica's right. it was needed. but look, i disagree with her a little bit in that donald trump's problem is just with gop voters. if he can bring them home, the numbers show, and a lot of people in d.c. don't want to admit this, but trump is doing better than romney with nonwhite voters and categories except for with republicans. he needs to bring republicans home. the combination of steve bannon and kellyanne conway is exactly playing to that. they are try and would true republicans. they know the base and know

and we've seen since donald trump hiring kellyanne conway that he has been making this presidential pivot. ironically after firing the guy that said it was going to happen, it's happened under kellyanne becoming the new campaign manager. we'll see if it lasts. and i, you know, donald trump we know has been a very volatile candidate. and of course he deserves media scrutiny, but i think he also deserves credit for at least making these initial attempts. >> but mostly i would say the press was either puzzled by this, leslie marshall, or negative toward it. i know you're no trump fan, but how much of the coverage do you think was influenced by the increasingly hostile tone in the press about donald trump and his candidacy? >> well, i think quite frankly any time trump opened his mouth, everybody would cover it because he's good for ratings. i mean, that's the reality and that's a real bottom line. i don't think trump had any disservice. we have to look historically, this is probably the most shakeup we've seen in a presidential campaign, at least in the most current elections in modern day.

you see the influence of kellyanne conway. the question is, can he stay on track. >> i want to distinguish here between bannon and conway. what skills, experience does she bring to the trump campaign? >> look, she is more of a veteran person in politics. she's worked on a lot of campaigns, interestingly with kind of anti-establishment characters in the past. so she's comfortable in that realm. she's very knowledgeable about the women's vote. she's made a kind of study and art of it. her goal is to maybe make donald trump not just more rigorous and disciplined, but humanize his campaign a little bit and make it more optimistic. she said as much. >> that's not steve bannon's forte. >> his is to appeal to unionized democrats, the forgotten people as trump describes them. trump has finally figured out he's not going to win merely with the base that provided him in the victory in the primaries. the opinion polls show you lose if that's all you get in the general election. now, i read that speech where he talks about the system bein

kellyanne conway, very well respected across the board, has been elevated, as has steve brannon. the trump campaign says this is just in addition. we have nothing compared to those working for the clinton campaign. >> no campaign ever admits it's in the midst of a shakeup. it's always an addition, an expansion. this is obviously a big deal, and it is a demotion for manafort, and his involvement with russia and ukraine doesn't help. but i just want to say one thing about the briefing. listening to the general speaking about this, you get the idea it was a very general discussion, probably didn't reach anywhere near the level of secrecy that you find in the clinton e-mails. but the second thing that it points out is, almost on every issue abroad, the opponent is the one who would benefit if something bad happened, the incumbent would suffer. there's one exception, that's russia. if russia did something it could do, to invade ukraine, and essentially to dismember it, this would be the one item that could reflect really badry on trump because of the warm way he spoke about putin. hil
