as scott was mentioning. our entire republic is based on having different viewpoints and sorting them out in a way that doesn't involve arms. that's the entire premise in the way in which our government was set up. so, i think they're mistaken. i think to scott's point, this is a group, disparate citizens across this country that we need to listen to and listen to attentively. >> you have good political instincts. you've never lost a race. you're pretty great at reading your constituent base. what do you think the mood of voters is out there? and does that give you any cause for concern for going forward, for the republican party going forward? >> yeah, i think that we're at something of an inflexion point. if you look at government spending numbers, we're at a real problem point in government's ability to deliver on promises that have been made. that's not just tied to the affordable care act. it's tied to a whole set of different promises. one of the thin things i said on saturday to the group assembled is

good thing you rushed the vote on scott pruitt. if scott pruitt does end up taking fall because of this growing scandal around him, he will be falling for a much greater height because of the way republicans rushed him into the cabinet. that does it for us tonight. see you again tomorrow. now it's time for the last word with lawrence o'donnell. >> rachel, i have worked on tv dramas where we have tried to write cliff hangers at the end of a particular season or episode, but the cliff hanger you just left us is better than anything we could come up with in tv drama. >> and when the republicans decided they were just going to put a brick on the gas pedal and jump out of the car, they could see the cliff and they did this anyway. >> and in the past, wherever clouds like that developed around nominations, the party in power always pumped the brakes a little bit, because they were afraid of exactly this. like, we don't want to confirm him this week and be in trouble two weeks later. >> exactly, they would at least delay it if not just ya

why was it coretta scott king's letter that seemed to raise their hackles the most? these are good questions we can come to our own conclusions. >> i can read your conclusions on your face. i have one last question for you, sir. >> yes. >> when the new president came to office, one of the intriguing things was that you're both new yorkers. he initially said some not unkind things about you and you talked about the fact that even though you weren't friends you had crossed paths a few times and were able to have a conversation. he has since called you a clown, he has accused you of fake crying over the refugee ban. are you talking to him at all? >> i haven't talked to him much in the last few weeks. when he praised me, it didn't matter. when he called names, it didn't matter. we're guided by our values. we have strong values, it's what america should be about and what happened is the donald trump presidency moved so far to the right it's hard to see compromising with them on almost anything because they are not what donald trump campaigned on. as i said to you last tim
