we continue to wait for terry mcauliffe, the governor of virginia. he's going to be holding a press conference coming up here in this hour to address the events of today, the violence in charlottesville and also the tragedy, the death of one person. we are waiting on information about the identity of this person and also about the updates for the others injured. 35 other people were taken to the hospital after a vehicle slammed into a crowd of protestors on foot. this was after a day of violent interactions between white nationalists and the counter protestors on the streets of charlottesville, virginia. we do also have other information coming in that in the 5:00 p.m. hour that there was a virginia state police helicopter that crashed southwest of charlottesville, and we are hearing about the actual aircraft with the virginia state police, saying that there have been two confirmed fatalities. again, this happening in albore more oh county. the crash is under investigation. nbc has not independently verified the confirmation of two people losing thei

this is from charlottesville, virginia. you've seen video from early, just a couple of hours ago where it is clearly very, very tense. a state of emergency has been declared in that city after this violence broke out. it was at a rally held by white nationalists. counterprotesters showed up in large numbers. it happened as they were making their way to emancipation park where a noon eastern rally was planned. it was scheduled to protest the removal of a statue of the general robert e. lee. obviously tensions rose dramatically as these two groups faced off amid very mild police presence at the time. we saw water bottles flying back and forth, police were using tear gas to try to break up this crowd. baseball bats, sticks. we saw people struck. you just saw it right there for yourself, there have been injuries. we don't know the extent of the injuries. we know at least one police officer for the university of virginia injured there. the campus is just adjacent to right where all of this mayhem is under way. let's go to nbc's

the governor of virginia has declared a state of emergency in virginia. local police and state police have declared an unlawful assembly for that gathering and subsequently the pictures that you are looking at right now is of an automobile collision. we do not have confirmation, although it appears to be intentional, of a vehicle that crashed into a group of counterprotesters, there to stand up against what they say is the racism of the movement, of the alt-right and white nationalists there today. this car, a silver dodge, plowed into the crowd. from the video, appears to have backed out and left the scene. nbc's maya rodriguez is on the scene right there as we await remarks in the president. maya, what is the latest on the ground? charlottesville? >> reporter: well, i can tell you that we have seen a number of the counterprotesters moved out of here at this point. we did have police come down the street about an hour ago, just making sure that everybody would move along, and as you can see right now, there's actually a police officer inside one of the v
