cnn analyst john avalon is here with me. there is a heck of lot to go through but let's start with this senate intel committee subpoena of don jr. so just as the president himself had said the mueller report exonerated him, which it didn't, he is now saying that his son has been exonerated and he is surprised by the subpoena. i'm not quite sure if he is going to fight it though. what do you think of that? >> what is striking is the letter on behalf of don jr. calling burr a so-called republican unwilling to stand up to his boss warner. burr is a republican in quite good standing. he's the chairman of the committee and been operating in bipartisan fashion something unusual in washington but this is the tendency in the party to call out anyone who breaks ranks with the trump family as a hairetic. it is an insult to burr and thein defense of the senate. they said written questions may be okay so we're back to that game. but they've been calling witnesses back. they want to get it right and they've had their own investigation go

cnn's manu raju is on capitol hill. and what can you tell us? what is the committee specifically asking for? >> reporter: well, they want these lawyers to turn over documents and submit to interviews as part of this committee's investigation into potential obstruction of its own previous probe into russian interference. now, this all stems back from michael cohen's testimony to this very committee, when he downplayed the effort to try to get that trump tower moscow project back in 2017, when he testified. he downplayed the role of the trump organizations pursued, suggested that it ended in january of 2016, when it went on much longer. he later acknowledged lying, and that's one of the things he pleaded guilty to. now, after the democrats took control in this congress, they brought michael cohen back to this committee. he provided the committee with edited statements that showed that he had some -- there was some involvement by trump attorneys before he testified, before the house committee back in 2017. now, what adam schiff is asking for is mor

cnn's boris sanchez is at the white house. boris, judging by his twitter feed, the president has a mixed bag of things on his mind today. did anything foreshadow this very strong warning to iran today and do we know what specifically triggered it? >> ana, we've asked figures on the national security council about circumstances about his tweet about iran. they have declined the comment. the president has not been shying using inflammatory rhetoric regarding nations that have difficult relationships with the united states, notably not just iran, but previously north korea until relations seemed to warm up a bit between the two. the president also tweeted about congressman justin amash, the first republican to suggest some of the actions by president trump described in the mueller report are impeachable. the president tweeting out to him, calling him a loser. certainly democrats don't feel that way, including senator elizabeth warren. obviously she is running for president. he is defended justin amash today on the campaign trail.

cnn's fred pleitgen joining me right now. fred the plane left the airport in moscow only to turn around with trouble. >> reporter: yeah, you're absolutely right. turned around only after a couple minutes. certainly looking at that video it seems a surprise that anybody would have walked away from that crash alive. you can see the plane coming down at the airport and took off from that airport only a couple hours before that incident there happened. then comes to a screeching halt and seems to somehow slide off the tarmac absolutely engulfed in a ball of fire. as you said, people then running out of the plane. now, apparently what happened is that it took off a couple minutes later. it declared an emergency and decided to return back to that airport. it's unclear what exactly caused all that. the plane then touched down about 26 or 28 minutes after it had taken off. so far what the russian investigators are saying is they say those engines caught on fire after the plane hit the ground. so it could have been somewhat of a hard

cnn's stephen jung is following the story. stephen, of course, the big question at this point, everybody wants to know how will china retaliate? they haven't said so, but what are the options? >> that's right, rosemary. they have not offered any specifics on their promise of countermeasures against the u.s. they could obviously impose countertariffs on u.s. imports but not dollar for dollar because, remember, china imports a lot less from the u.s. than the other way around. so they're literally running out of american products to tax. they can also cancel major purchases from the u.s., especially in terms of agricultural and energy products which could hit hard on the political base of mr. trump in the u.s. the chinese could also create non-terrorist barriers for american companies. or even launching an official retaliation by making american companies' lives very difficult. for example, delaying the issuance of licenses or customs clearance or even sending fire inspectors. rosemary? >> well, if this is going on, where are the

let's get right to cnn's pamela brown at the white house. tamel pamela, what is the white house saying? >> reporter: we have learned that president trump is asserting immunity in order to block former white house counsel don mcgahn, a key witness in the russia probe, from testifying to congress yesterday. the subpoena deadline from the house judiciary committee was tomorrow and so late this afternoon, white house counsel pat cipollone, sent a letter to jerry nadler, the chair of the house judiciary saying that don mcgahn cannot be compelled to testify, citing a 2014 doj memo laying out the legal argument. pat cipollone also saying the white house is doing this on the advice of the department of justice. now, don mcgahn is a private citizen, he could choose to not follow the white house directive, but sources tell us that don mcgahn wants to do what the white house is telling him to do, because of the committee's interests in his time here at the white house, as white house counsel. but certainly, this sets up just yet another flashpoint in b

you're watching cnn, i'm brooke baldwin. to a disturbing story out of ohio, ohio state university failed to act as a team -- failed to act as team doctor richard strauss abused 177 athletes and they found that coaches and administration did not speak up about this, for two decades. in 1996 doctor strauss was removed from his role following an investigation. he died by suicide in 2005. and when accusers started coming forward last year, i talked with michael desabatto a ohio state wrestler and one of the athlete as -- abused by strauss and this is what he told me one year ago. >> they were conversations with a group of athletes who were complaining on a regular basis. not only about dr. strauss, but the conditions within lock and tall which forced us to take showers with not only dr. strauss but other university faculty members and professor who had access to our shower facility and on a daily basis were involved in lewd acts that included public masturbation, excessive soaping of their groin area and dr. strauss was one of t

let's go right to cnn's barbara starr at the pentagon. and barbara, how specific and credible is the pentagon being here about what the threat actually is? >> well, they are publicly saying nothing about the threat, jake. but several u.s. officials tell me that what they are seeing is intelligence that indicates to them iran is moving short-range ballistic missiles around by sea, on boats, in the persian gulf. so these short-range ballistic missiles could pose a threat to u.s. forces up and down the gulf and to the entire region. the issue, of course is, if they could manage to launch them off one of these boats or move them to shore locations, but basically to move them around, it might be more difficult for the u.s. to find them and to find the launch points, so the u.s., now the pentagon is talking, internally about sending additional air defense missile defense capabilities to the region, something like the patriot missile. but the bottom line is, they are hoping that they can deter any intention by iranian forces. they are hoping tha
