ian pannell is in london with the story. good morning, ian. >> reporter: good morning, george. that's right. as you say, this is navalny's first interview since he was poisoned. just to remind you, he's russia's leading activist activist and a thorn in the side of president putin. he fell ill on a flight to germany. he was eventually taken to berlin for treatment where he is now recovering. germany says navalny was poisoned with a deadly nerve agent. chancellor angela merkel calling it attempted murder. now navalny accuses vladimir putin of ordering his poisoning saying he was supposed to have died. the kremlin has just responded, calling the accusation baseless and insulting, but navalny describes this as having a nuclear bomb dropped on him. his hands trembling at times and it's said he should recover at least 90%, and so the interviewer asks him why. navalny says i'm not afraid. if my hands tremble it's not from fear but from this stuff. i will not give putin the gift of not returning to russia. george? >> courageous man right there. ian, thanks very much. robin? >>> now we

we go to ian pannell with the latest. good morning, ian. >> reporter: yeah, good morning, michael. there's been widespread global reaction as you would expect. here in britain prime minister boris johnson just tweeted his best wishes to president trump and the first lady saying, hope they both have a speedy recovery from coronavirus. johnson is one of a number of world leaders who knows exactly how terrible the disease can be having spent weeks seriously ill in hospital himself. like president trump and bolsonaro of brazil, johnson's one of those leaders who is accused of being skeptical or minimizing risks only to discover firsthand how widespread and potentially devastating it can be. and amidst the wall of well wishes there is a tone especially on social media of i told you so but vladimir putin for one appears wholehearted in his sympathies. the russian president sent a telegram. he doesn't tweet. saying i'm sure your inherent life, energetic cheerfulness and optimism will help you, and there's also been widespread sympathy across asia. to the president of the european council

ian pannell joins us now and has the latest. good morning, ian. >> reporter: yeah. good morning, robin. this is a rapidly developing story. what we know so far is that at least three people have been killed and a number wounded in a terrorist stabbing attack in a church in the southern french city of nice. it happened at notre dame basilica, 9:00 local time and the suspect who is reportedly been injured is now in police custody. the authorities appear to have arrived rapidly on the scene storming the church as you'd expect. the area is now cordoned off with a heavy police presence there, armed police on the scene. president macron is also going to go down to nice and to try and assess what's going on. remember, this comes just under two weeks after that terrible beheading incident in paris, france, that this is another stark reminder of the threats that exist in the city and a country that has a terrible history of this kind of incident. michael? >> thank you so much, ian. >>> now we're going to turn to the latest on the coronavirus emergency. an hhs memo obtained b

it's a controversial approach that regulators will need to approve and ian pannell is in london with more. >> reporter: volunteering to be deliberately injected with coronavirus may sound crazy, but some also think this is the best way of testing some of those vaccines currently being developed and a group of volunteers here in britain is now stepping forward to do just that. and in the last couple of hours, the british government said it's going to sponsor these trials. this morning, britain giving the greenlight to highly controversial vaccine testing that will deliberately expose people to coronavirus. these so-called "challenge trials," which will be the first of their kind to be authorized in the world if regulators give the go ahead, will take healthy young volunteer, inject them with the vaccine and then days later they'll inhale a specially manufactured dose of the virus. the first step of the process announced today using a small group of 18-year-old to 30-year-olds to establish the dose of the virus to be used in the trials. they'll then be monitored in a quarantine ward at
