time evacuate americans from afghanistan is running out and the pentagon is already making some tough choices. i'm joined now by orrin lieberman. >> on sunday they said there were 500 staff evacuated but a number to go. the total number that need to be evacuated from the embassy is 4,000. at some point in the future in the coming days, the u.s. military will be able to move about 5,000 people a day. that's the maximum capacity of people they can move. but they're not at that number yet. as you pointed out, time is critical here. the secretary of defense lloyd austin sending in another 1,000 troops into afghanistan. that will be a total of 6,000 in the coming hours and days. the mission, to secure the karzai airport, the critical location to get in and out of afghanistan. if it were to fall into the hands of taliban, that would be the worst case scenario. the airport is the critical point for getting americans and afghan interim rhetters and others who have helped the u.s. it appears from what we're seeing on these websites that there are ongoing flights into and out of the country as

it's expected to make landfall as a category four storm likely some time late sunday afternoon over louisiana. there's been a lot of comparisons here to hurricane katrina because it's very memorable for a lot of folks that live there. katrina was technically a category three at landfall, whereas ida is expected to be a category four. so in terms of winds, ida is expected to be a stronger storm compared to katrina but one thing to note is the path. technically, the track went to the east of new orleans. where ida is expected to go just to the west. putting new orleans on the eastern side of the storm. that side has slightly stronger wind speeds than the western half of the storm and more specifically, the northeast quadrant, also called the front right quadrant. not only tends to have strongest winds but highest surge and greatest tornado potential but that sun fortunately where new orleans is expected to be. we have the potential, not only for tornadoes but also water spouts and even damaging winds tomorrow for new orleans, even up through jackson, mississippi. not just the potential for torn

early on sunday. and probably, around noon on sunday. that's when we're looking at a landfall. then, it lingers come sunday, on into monday and tuesday. and any time you have a system that's just meandering, you know you are going to pick up a lot of rain in short order and that's what we are going to see. now, models are in really good agreement on this system, henri, makin making landfall up here in new england. if you will remember, over the last several days, some models were wanting to take it into new england. some were keeping it right offshore. but now, models are in really good agreement with an impact in long island going into connecticut. it doesn't take much in the way of rainfall in this area to cause flooding. couple of inches. maybe, three inches, you will get some flooding. we have already picked up a lot in the way of rainfall over the last week because of tropical systems. and now, we're going to see up to 6 inches of rain on top of that other rain that we just picked up. that could lead to the potential for some flooding, as well as trees coming down when you

those customers should check schedules ahead of time on sunday and monday as the situation is changing -- >> and you were just listening to the officials from massachusetts updating on hurricane henri. of course it's heading to that region, and so people there are getting prepared. i want to bring in chad myers, who's covered so many of these storms over the years. chad, give us the latest on this forecast and what are your thoughts in terms of are we going to see this make landfall as a hurricane or might it potentially weaken as they move toward the northeast colder waters? >> sometimes they can weaken because the gulfstream can come out like this. by the time the storm gets into this colder water, temperatures are about 5 degrees colder there. so the storm probably won't get stronger. i'm not convinced it's going to get weaker. i'm just convinced it's not going to get stronger from there. there's a couple things going on with this storm that we don't always have to talk about, but this time we do. there's going to be significant storm surge in long island sound. there's going to sur

according to "the new york times," the group from the university tried to get out on sunday on buses to the kabul airport, but after hours of waiting for clearance, they were notified that the airport gates were a security threat, and their evacuations were called off. joining me now is the president of the american university of afghanistan, ian bickford who we should note was able to get out of afghanistan days before that. thank you so much for being with us. tell us what happened on sunday when students and faculty tried to get out? >> good morning, and thank you. well, first, i should say sunday was the last day of a two-week long effort to help our students relocate from afghanistan to safe sites where they can continue their learning without fear. sunday was, we thought, our best hope. we organized a convoy of more than a dozen buses. something like 500 students, close to 600 students, family, staff, faculty boarded those buses with the sincere hope that they would be given permission to enter the airport, board flights, and begin their journey to a better life. in the course

it was a sad day on sunday. president biden standing for the first time as commander in chief for this solemn movement. we saw him kind of react with anguish, right? it was silent, but we saw his body movements. at times, he put his hands over his heart as he saw those transfer cases being carried down off that c-17. we saw him bowing his head, potentially in prayer. we know that he's a deeply religious man. and it's a significant day for him because this is, as i said, the first time that he has presided over a transfer of cases, the solemn movement. as president, we know that he had done it at least once as vice president. but really this is something that is happening under his watch as a consequence of his actions, of his decision to withdraw from august 31st. that is something that weighs on him. we first saw him yesterday on sunday going to the airport where he privately met with families, really tapping into that empathizer in chief role that we have seen from him a couple times during that presidency. th

timing wise, thinking right around lunchtime on sunday. it will continue to push farther inland before then going back out to the east over the open atlantic. one thing we did notice in the last advisory that started to tick up was the winds forecast with this. the red area here, about 74 to 110 mile per hour wind gusts. look at this purple area here, including montauk, we're talking 110 mile per hour wind gusts. the other areas, 40 to 60 mile per hour winds that's enough when you talk about the combination of winds and rain. along the east coast, from north carolina up to massachusetts, high surf and rip currents will be a concern but the heaviest rainfall is going to be limited in and around that landfall location but it spreads inland so new york, vermont, new hampshire stil

this time as a category 2 storm. it slammed ashore sunday as a cat 4 and is proving to be every bit as devastating as first feared. the first storm related death has been reported. this was near baton rouge amid hurricane force winds, heavy rain, and flash flooding. nearly a million customers are without power at the moment. and people in jefferson parish say water in their homes is coming up to their chests. here is what the sheriff of the parish told cnn. >> we're still getting a lot of wind gusts and still are not able to be able to respond to any calls for service. even if we had, would want to, every road is impassable. during the brief reprieve of the eye i was able to travel a couple miles. i had to zigzag through downed power lines and trees and debris and roofs and at night with the parish completely dark there was no way we could get on the highway and safely respond. >> just south of new orleans the situation in jefferson parish is apparently deteriorating rapidly. the parish president spoke to cnn's pamel

a hurricane could be headed to new york and new england as early as sunday. hurricane warnings are in effect for parts of long island, new york, and southern new england as tropical storm henri makes its way north in the atlantic and gains strength. last time a hurricane made landfall in this region was hurricane bob back in 1991. what is the latest on the storm? >> well, anderson, the 8:00 advisory came out and it is still a strong tropical storm but nearly a hurricane. could become a hurricane sometime tonight or tomorrow morning. new york city is now in the forecast cone and the hurricane warnings have been issued for new england, as well as parts of long island. so here is the latest. 70-mile-per-hour winds. gusts of 85. the storm is moving to the north at 7 miles per hour. it should pick up a little bit of forward speed over the next 24 hours. becoming a category 1 storm. could be a category 1 storm by the time it makes landfall. looks likely that it's going to make landfall along long island, or even portions of, say, rhode island could be portion of th
