jonathan reiner. i want to start with you, doctor. we learn from what they are reporting that trump was symptomatic throughout this whole process. he was tired, they suspected he had a little cold. this went on for days until we found out many days later he was positive. what revelations, questions do the questions raise for you? >> well, first of all, brianna, we knew last year, several of us last year were saying the president had to be positive at the debate or before the debate. because when he tested -- when it was announced that he tested positive two days after the debate, he was already quite sick and was hospitalized the next day. typically it takes about a week after someone tests positive for them to become ill enough to be hospitalized. but this revelation, i mean, really the big story to me is that the white house knew that the president was positive on saturday. three days before the debate. they did a second test with an antigen test, significantly less sensitive than the rapid molecular pcr test that the white house wa

jonathan reiner from george washington university. south african scientists looking at the data in the cases they are seeing are saying there are a lot of people coming in with omicron who were previously infected. what's the significance of that, doctor? >> that previous infection doesn't protect that well against this variant. john, what we know about this variant with certainty, there are dozens of mutations to the virus. and some of these mutations change the shape of the virus or change how the virus presents itself to antibodies, either naturally occurring or antibody that are produced by vaccines. so it has a different appearance. at least from these initial small reports out of south africa, it looks like the antibodies obtained naturally may not be enough. now, we also know that infection induced antibodies wane over time, the same as vaccine induced antibodies. so the combination of a changed appearance of the virus and waning amounts of antibodies may not be enough to protect. >> and, doctor, the white house says that one o

jonathan reiner. great to have you with us this morning. 500 million test kits available, i guess within a few weeks. not today but a few weeks. is that enough? how often should all of us be testing, doctor? >> i think it is a good start. i think we're going to need a lot more than that. so the way to keep our economy hope and to keep our schools open and to keep each other safe going forward, at least until this pandemic is really brought under control, is going to be to test frequently. so, you know, last year, if someone in your office tested positive, particularly before we had vaccines, everyone was isolating for ten days. now, particularly in our vaccinated world, we don't need to do that. we can test people, and you stay at work, stay in school as long as you remain negative. our tests are really good at doing this. they take 15 minutes. they're inexpensive, or they should be inexpensive. i think this 500,000 tests a big step forward. but, you know, the proof is going to be in the pudding. we'r

jonathan reiner, a doctor and professor at george washington university. 86% oxygen level. what does that mean? >> it means the president should be hospitalized. he was sick. it means that pneumonia. and we know his doctors were essentially panicked about him they threw at him essentially the kitchen sink of experimental therapies. so he received remdesivir. he also received steroids, which the white house initially declined to tell the press. then they also treated him with a monoclonal antibodies, not yet approved by the fda. they were so worried about the president that they sought approval and delivery for this x pe experimental therapy because they feared for the president's life. >> regeneron is when he was in bed, before he went to the hospital. what does that tell you? >> regeneron, the -- the minn monoclonal antibodies from regeneron are a very effective therapy for people who are sick early in their illness, who have not yet developed their own effective antibody response. so, you know, it tells me that they worried about the survival of the president. but there i
