we begin in michigan this morning. families there are grieving after a horrific shooting at a high school in suburban detroit. the shooter, a 15-year-old student at oxford high school, now in custody and on suicide watch after killing three of his fellow students and injuring, badly injuring eight other people tuesday afternoon. the three who died, teenagers, hannah saint juliana, tate meyer, died in a deputy's car on the way to the hospital. traumatized students now coping with something no young person should have to experience. >> we heard two gunshots. and then after that my teacher ran to the room, locked it, we barricaded, and then we covered the windows and hid. the very first thing in my head was, this is actually happening. i'm going to text my family, say i love them just in case if i were to die. >> the students were trained for this. they were trained for the worst, and they jumped into action quickly within minutes. that one student there telling anderson cooper that they armed themselves with calculators

in this case i don't know the details of the michigan law. but it looks as if these parents bought a gun for their child who shouldn't have ever possessed it. and so if parents are in violation of state law, they should be held accountable. i do think this really should make us think hard about safe storage laws. in connecticut we have on the books a law that requires parents to safely store their guns. and if those guns aren't locked up with minors in the house, they can be held accountable without question. michigan doesn't have that law on the books, but we should pass that on a national basis. i think we could get a lot of gun owners to support us to say, if you have minors in the house, if you have weapons, you have to keep those weapons locked up. if we just made that change, not only would that prevent some of these horrific mass shootings -- >> suicide. which is most of the gun deaths in this country, suicide. >> and accidental shootings. so a safe storage law may be the kind of thing that could draw bipartisan compromise that could g

look at what's happening in michigan versus the rest of the country. look at the midwest, there's been these waves of the transmission. we have seen this over time. we keep talking about the numbers as a country. it's been a bunch of regions so here in the south, we had a significant sort of up tick, as you see there. there's the orange line. it's come down and now you see what's happening in the midwest. on top of that, cooler, drier weather. people are i doors more. more transmission as a result. you only get about 55% of the state is vaccinated. that's a lot of unvaccinated people. let me show you quickly to miguel's point, you look at what's happening many the hospital. of the covid patients in the hospital, in michigan, 76% of them are unvaccinated. 87% of the covid patients in the hospital in the icu unvaccinate and 88% of the covid patients unvaccinated op a ventilator. it's significant. people are looking at this in the rear view mirror. that tells a different story. >> these nurse who is are having panic attacks and having to hide crying becau

let's discuss with the oakland county michigan sheriff, michael brouchard. thank you for joining us. authorities are searching the home of the man who actually helped the crumbley parents hide trying to evade arrest. could he face charges? >> obviously the determination we have to come up with via evidence and interviews are did he know they were on the run and was he aiding them with that knowledge. my detectives are currently executing a search warrant, seizing digital items such as phones, computers, tablets, et cetera, to determine as relates to communicative action before and after. he is cooperating. his attorney is cooperating. they offered to come in. they have talked to our detectives at length. we'll have to see what information the investigation, search warrant and these discussions bear. >> as far as the parents are concerned, sheriff, you say the circumstances of their arrest do indicate that they weren't looking to surrender. they now face four counts of involuntary manslaughter. do you believe they should face additional charges for apparently

you mentioned michigan. michigan, after being in a republican gerrymander the last decade, that state could see many competitive house races this next year, and michigan is one of the growing number of states that's using an independent hypothetically nonpartisan maps, and that's drawing attention across the country. >> you can see nevada on that front. i think you picked this up the other day, the number of battles right now are interesting. i think there's one in michigan, one or two in california right now. what are you seeing there in terms of how that nets out for each party? >> this is something that pops up from time to time, particularly in the eastern district, that you have two members in the same district. there was one created in michigan. the map was finalized this week of two democrats running against each other, haley and stevens in the same district. a lot of this is democrat versus republican in the same district, but particularly in states where there is a lot of midwestern states losing po

we are at the fourth surge now in michigan. the number of hospital san diegos hospitalizations are seeing what we saw in the spring of 2021. and the problem these numbers are not only in specific areas in michigan, but throughout the state. and it is taxing our healthcare systems, our hospitals, our staff significantly. and it is honestly takinge ing from the capacity delivered care. >> what you're seeing now, the hospitalizations, this is pre-omicron, the bulk of the folks now crowding icus, is that from the delta surge? you haven't seen the worst of omicron? >> you're absolutely correct. and this is why we are very concerned. because this is a result of what we have seen with the -- that started with us in fact in august. i was looking at our numbers and we started seeing this in august. and it has peaked last week. but you're very concerned because as our test positivity rate, the number of people testing positive in our hospital, in the past few days, throughout our system, we have been running now about 25% positivity rate

in michigan, it has covid hospitalizations hovering around a new peak. cnn jason carol went inside one michigan hospital to see how they are handling it. >> it's been a lot worse but we do what we can. i'm in the a super hero. i'm just a nurse. >> reporter: she's a covid nurse working on 8th north team. 8th floor, north tower at beaumont hospital in dearborn, michigan. she's worked here since she graduated from nursing school about a year and a half ago. lately the covid unit is seeing more and more patients all while there are fewer nurses to care for them. >> there's been days i'm like i don't know how much longer i can do this and i'm brand flu. it's very rewarding what we do. >> reporter: the new wave is flooding michigan's health care system overwhelming doctors and nurses. admission to hospitals statewide have risen 43% over the past month. currently, there's more than 100 people being treated for covid hospital. by comparison in july, hospitalized covid patients were only in the single digits. the influx of pashtients has tad this hospital to so m

athena jones is live in oxford, michigan this morning. i'm curious what the school is saying in the wake of this tragedy. >> reporter: good morning. well, since the very day of the shooting, there have been a lot of questions raised about the school's handles of ethan crumbley and now we're hearing more of the school's version of the events and how they responded on monday and tuesday when two separate teachers raised concerns about the behavior of ethan crumbley. monday it was because they saw him viewing images of ammunition on his cellphone and tuesday it was because they saw a disturbing drawing that crumbley had that depicting a semi automatic gun, a body that appeared to be bleeding and words like blood everywhere. and also the superintendent says in the letter that school counselors and school staff decided that based on ethan's answers and demeanor and the answers they crumbley's parents, they concluded that he was not likely to inflict harm or on others. and they said that he had to get counseling within 48 hours. and they told c
