a democrat from hawaii and a liberal democrat from michigan. that was a friendship that lasted until phil hart died. >> he called me on the 14th, saying this is your anniversary. i hope it is better than the one you had in 1945. i saw him again today. at walter reed hospital. i was there to get therapy. we were wounded a week apart. phil hart had a superficial flesh wound. he was just the greatest guy in the world. he would bring us food and empty our bedpans and write letters for us. his wife was jane briggs. the briggs family owned the detroit tigers. he would bring in baseball tickets. just a wonderful man. the building is named after him where my office was. that symbolized what an outstanding person he was. >> that transcended politics. >> all the time. if you check my record with phil hart, there would be -- there would not be many similarities but we always respected each other. i used to sit in the back row of the senate. anytime phil hart would come in, he would nod and have a little smile on his face. a nice person, a decent person. >
