i mean, i'm from michigan. i went to high school about a 20-minute drive away from this high school in oxford, and i knew people, had classmates who were given guns as gifts. i'm not saying that every one of them and their families were irresponsible in the ownership of that but it speaks to a culture that exists in so many parts of the country, and you add on top of that not just political and social divisions, but the fact that these divisions have been, you know, have such a violent rhetoric attached to it. children are not immune from this. and i think that those are some of the factors behind what we saw happen tragically in michigan, but i think shannon is absolutely right. laws that target two things. one, safety, things like requiring that they be locked up, and also, not targeting the types and numbers of guns but who has them, things like the red flag laws. these are things that are a common sensical. hopefully events like this will help push them but we've seen so many times that there's so much resi

but back to the michigan case here, you have said that the school in michigan could and should have done more. what's your reaction to the announcement of this third party investigation? >> there absolutely needs to be an investigation. the school should have done an behavioral threat assessment and make sure this is not a threat and if it is, they need to be doing something. law enforcement should be involved, mental health counselors. they need to sit down and have gone through this threat to make sure that this student didn't have access to guns and wasn't going to have a threat and kill anybody that day. the school is at fault. they should have done a behavioral threat assessment. >> and cynthia, we know that the school district has said that counselors did meet with this student, and there have been questions about why wasn't the backpack searched. and the superintendent said, it's not clear at what point the student did have the weapon on him. as a prosecutor looking from that lens, could any school or district official or officials face any legal ramifications here? >> there will

i'm the top law enforcement official in the state of michigan. my department has extensive experience in these types of investigations. we investigated the events related to nasser at msu. one of the biggest clergy abuse investigations in the nation, the boy scouts of america investigation, the flint water crisis investigation. so we're used to wide-scale investigations. and i think that we're uniquely situated to do this, because, again, not only do we have criminal and civil attorneys, but we also partner with state agencies like the michigan state police, the department of education, and even our licensing department at the state in case there are people who have not committed criminal conduct but perhaps they ought to be stripped of their professional licenses as a result of any infractions that occur. >> i mean, have you been in touch with school officials there? why put this out on twitter? do you know if this is something that they want? >> well, you know, we sent out an email to the attorney that represents the oxford community schools. w

under michigan law they weren't required to. but when you put those two pieces together, this knowledge that he's thinking about it, and this knowledge that he has access to a gun, and they don't tell anyone, they return him to the classroom, that's the sort of recklessness you need to prove involuntary manslaughter. >> what about the school here? they had a meeting with the parents on the morning of this incident where the teacher found that drawing. the parents did not want to take him home. can't the school send him home? doesn't the school have the ability to say, we're not comfortable with him here today? >> and that's why ms. mcdonald said the investigation is ongoing. they need to know precisely what happened there. this is a child who should have never been allowed back into a classroom. the school will perhaps say we had no idea that he had access to a firearm and that the failure is on the parents. >> i'm surprised, though, given the nature of the photo, and the fact that it showed a bloody person on the ground, two gu

, shaq, thank you so much. >>> lear with me is michigan prosecutor karen mcdonald. thank you for being here. i'm just wondering, as you look into this case, if there was a way to see this coming. the kid had a meeting with his parents and the school just hours before he went allegedly on this rampage. was there no indication? >> it's difficult for me to comment on what somebody else knew. i can tell you that we are reviewing potential charges against mom and dad. and, you know, based on all of the evidence that we have so far, i can only say that i think that this was absolutely preventible. >> why would you want to charge mom and dad? >> well, if you knowingly have -- if you own a weapon or possess a weapon and you knowingly allow someone to have free access to it, who you have reason to believe might use it to injure somebody, that is willful. it's gross negligence. and there are lots of criminal consequences for that. you have to -- owning a gun is a right, but you have to have responsibility with it too. and if it's not safely stored, if it's not secured, that's

shaquille brewster is on the ground in pontiac, michigan. shaq, what can you tell us about this news conference from the county prosecutors? this is where we're going to find out if the parents are going to be charged? >> that is definitely the expectations, craig. it's being billed as an update on the latest with the investigation, but the prosecutor during a press conference yesterday said that she would have a decision on whether or not to charge the parents of this 15-year-old suspected shooter and possible connection to the shooting. she would have that decision within 24 hours. now, she didn't get into the nature of the possible charges or the severity of those charges, but one thing that we've been hearing from her since the day after the shooting is an emphasis on the idea of responsible gun ownership. we know, for example, that the gun that was used in the shooting was purchased by the suspect's father a week ago from today. so there's a question over how that suspect got access to the gun and how that gun then got into the school.

what does michigan need right now? >> well, certainly michigan is short on antibodies. our system, we keep whittling down the people who qualify. you have to be over a certain bmi. you have to have certain risk factors and within seven days of symptoms. it's based on that. if you're a vaccinated person, you don't qualify. and frankly, you're so well protected that the benefit of the antibodies is very might be mall if you're vaccinated anyway. as far as staff, you know, it's been tough. nursing staff have chosen to go into other clinical situations where they're not in the er and the hospitals. some have left nursing altogether just because it's a system -- it's easy to get burned out right now. not necessarily just the workload, but the frustration of dealing with patients. in our area it's about 45 % vaccination rate. a lot of people are very upset with nurses when they ask them if they're vaccinated. we try to test people. a lot of people resist to even getting tested, suggesting we can make up any result we want. i think a lot of people never envisioned that as part
