i'm katy tur. we're learning new details about the man behind a hostage situation at a synagogue in texas. malik faisal akram, a british national, was identified as the hostage taker. he was killed during the standoff. now british authorities say two teenagers are being detained and a law enforcement official tells nbc news the teens are akram's sons. akram held a rabbi and three congregants at gunpoint for ten hours inside the synagogue. a live stream initially set up for virtual prayer services captured negotiations with police as well as the suspect's shouts. in that livestream, the gunman could be heard saying he targeted the synagogue because the united states only cares about jewish lives. during the standoff, akram demanded the release of aafia siddiqui, a pakistani neuroscientist who is currently serving a federal prison sentence in fort worth, texas, fewer than 25 miles from that synagogue. siddiqui was convicted by a federal jury in 2010 for the attempted killing of u.s. officers in afgha

first to you, katie benner. and on the indictment itself, talk about its significant. >> sure, this is an extremely significant indictment. the most serious charges brought in the january 6th investigation and also shows what happens when the justice department does its work slowly and thoroughly. there was a lot of criticism levied over the justice department over the past year for not bringing this kind of charge. we know that through our reporting and through public statements made by former officials under the trump administration this sedition was on the table almost immediately after the attack. however, the case had to build over time. we know that last year there were people, oath keepers that we saw in earlier indictments who were being looked at for sedition charges. but this indictment is interesting because it includes stewart rhodes who was not somebody who was part of the earliest discussion. clearly, the department had worked vigorously over the last year in order to try to gather as much evidence

and katie benner is the justice reporter for "the new york times." the white house has given us a bit of a preview. they say he's going to lay the blame for january 6th squarely at donald trump's feet, but this is a tough line for the president who got elected. he ran and got elected on the idea he was going to be a unifier of sorts. >> that's right, ali. but when it comes to january 6th president biden has always been crystal clear that he saw the attack on the capitol as a stain on our democracy. he sees it as a real threat to american democracy, and he's always said that the people who were responsible should be held accountable. he's been very clear he wants to be independent of the department of justice's investigation. but we can expect that tomorrow on the anniversary of this terrible day where we saw white supremacists and all sorts of hate groups and all sorts of people fueled by the lie fed to them by the former president trump that he is going to -- president biden is going to be very forceful in his words and very much marking the moment

>> katie fang, explain how these sentences work. what's the possibility that any of these men will actually get a chance at parole? >> probably not likely, jose. the reason why is paced upon the findings of the evidence, it would militate towards the idea that all of these convicted defendants, that went to trial with a jury of their peers, that jury found them guilty. for the reality, as we know, for people like travis mcmichael, greg mcmichael and roddie brian, travis is 35 years old, but greg is 66. william is 52. so jose, 30 years even with parole is going to be effectively a life sentence for those older gentlemen. but it's not just closure today in the state case, though. there's a federal hate crimes trial that's coming up in just a few weeks on february 7th, 2022. 1,000 perspective jurors have received a 14-page jury questionnaire. as we know, it took two and a half weeks to seat a jury for the state charge, but now we actually have federal hate crimes, as well as attempted kidnapping charges, and that could be an additional

katie beck is outside the courthouse in brunswick. also with us on this friday, charles coleman, a civil rights attorney, former brooklyn, new york prosecutor. he's an nbc news legal analyst. katie, who are we hearing from this court today and when can we expect the sentences to be handed down? >> reporter: well, as you said, this is a mandatory life sentence. the judge is determining whether any of the three defendants should have given the possibility of parole after serving 30 years. he will make that decision after hearing several testimonies from the stand. we know that arbery's mother and father will make brief statements. we don't know if anyone will call -- we know the defendants themselves will be given an opportunity to speak to the judge directly before they are sentenced. now, outside the courtroom, we're seeing a lot of the same familiar faces we've been seeing throughout the trial. a lot of advocates for racial justice supporting the arbery family. this morning in the way into the courtroom, his mother talked and spoke t
