oakland schools not the only schools dealing with covid concerns. we understand marin county is also making some changes. >> reporter: that's right. we were here just last week talking about how the guidelines seemed a bit stricter than other districts. now it seems like they're loosening up. the changes allow an unvaccinated person with a positive covid test within 30 days not to quarantine unless the person is symptomatic and tests positive again. also, a fully vaccinated but unboosted person who was exposed to covid may still attend school if they are asymptomatic and test negative. schools will also stop sending notifications to parents for general virus exposures, but will continue to do so when it comes to closures from close contacts like sports teammates or people in the same carpool. 625 new cases were reported on january 4th. since then the daily average has dropped to about 300 cases. in the east bay teachers and students are making a stand to let the school district know they don't feel enough is being done to protect them from the varia

yeah, oakland, e-mails were sent out so parents are aware of the situation. nbc bay area did receive a copy of the letter to the oakland unified families last night, and it said the sickout could disrupt the instruction, and the district calling it illegal in terms of the union terms. and ousd argues teachers could end up in a situation that is less safe if teachers do not show up. it's not known how many teachers will fake part in the sickout and which schools will feel the strain. parents we spoke with said they are concerned with their child's safety. >> if there's one staff member being asked to watch 90 kids because that's the reality in the moment, i -- i would make the choice, most likely, to pull my kids out of school. >> reporter: so what are teachers there saying? we asked the teachers' union for its take, and it said in part, quote, this is not an official action but we are urging district and state leaders to listen to the urgent demand for better masks and more testing. here in san francisco, sfusd saw a similar sickout from some of its teachers

after a late night meeting there's still no deal between the teachers and oakland schools over new oakland protocols. that means teachers could be closer to a strike. oakland schools are struggling during the omicron surge. >> reporter: they really are, kira. this comes as a time when schools statewide are dealing with teacher shortages. more than 100 staff members in the oakland unified district tested positive for covid last week, and the teachers showing up are stretched thin and are calling on the district to hire more support staff. >> whether there are sickouts or strikes, they are stretched thin. >> the meetings are scheduled to continue. meantime, statewide school districts are dealing with closures because of lack of staffing due to covid, and there could be a need for an extended school year to make up the loss in those school districts. schools outpace health care facilities for covid-19 outbreaks in the fall. palo alto school district recruited parents to fill in as teacher aides when there are shortages, and most teachers prefer in-person learning to distance learning. >> than
