here's john kirby. >> just some things at the top. i think, as you heard secretary austin address just last friday in his remarks with the chairman here in the briefing room, we remain focused on the evolving situation in europe and russia's actions on the ukrainian border and belarus. as the secretary said, the united states stands shoulder-to-shoulder with our nato allies. the current situation demands that we reinforce the deterrent and defensive posture on nato's eastern flank. president biden has been clear that the united states will respond to the growing threat to europe's security and stability. our commitment to nato, article v, and collective defense, remains ironclad. as part of this commitment and to be prepared for a range of contingencies, the united states will soon move additional forces to romania, poland, and germany. i want to be very clear about something. these are not permanent moves. they are moves designed to respond to the current security environment. moreover, these forces are not going to fight in ukraine.

john kirby joins me now. sir, thanks very much for joining us. the latest on where we are right now. obviously things are moving fast. but we just heard the latest drop deployment caught some of the soldiers off guard. >> right. we're proud of the 82nd airborne soldiers. we put them on a shorter tether to deploy a few weeks ago. you remember that. so they certainly knew as that soldier said that it was a possibility. but we believed it was the right thing to get them over there to join the 1700 of their fellow soldiers in that same unit. >> today the ukraine's president said in a series of announcements or posts that wednesday looks like it could be today. now one said he might have been joking. another one felt like he was serious about that. where are we with respect to the timeline, the potential invasion of the ukraine by russia? >> we said for quite some time now, charles, that it could be any day now. what i said earlier today is that he could move with little to no warning. so it could clearly be really any time now. i wouldn't get into sp

the briefing by john kirby was long and extensive and detailed all things considered. tell me what we learned? >> we learned more about the raid. we knew a bit already based on how the day unfolded. u.s. military helicopters landed a couple kilometers away from the building, and then they proceeded on foot, and then they used bullhorns to say to come outside, and before the u.s. military entered the building there was a large explosion on the third floor. that was the head of isis detonating himself. he was killed, as was his wife and two children. we also now know that the second floor of that building, there was an isis lieutenant, some sort of a deputy along with his wife and a child, all three were killed. so the u.s. military spent about two hours on the ground, and that may seem like a pretty long time but that's because they do what is called sight exploitation, anything they can could be operational intelligence that they could use to go after future isis targets or figure out something about isis that might help them, and then when they went back to the helico
