we go to the big board for msnbc national political correspondent, steve kornacki, steve my friend, good evening to you. we are getting results and from kansas. was influential onto wet levels. one because of the elections that are going on. but to because they have got a referendum in a primary, about abortion. it's the first time in america people are going to the polls after roe v. wade has collapsed. >> this is the first one of these that we have seen in the statewide level. we will see some more this november. i think we will see many more in the years to come. here it is and kansas. the proposal is a constitutional amendments that would say that the constitution of the state of kansas does not allow for, does not provide for, a right to an abortion. that with then if this passes, that would open the door to the legislature enacting a ban, if it wanted to, a severe restrictions if it wanted to. it would open the door to that. so what you are seeing here with 11% or so, more than 10% of the voting early. no is off to a good start here in terms of where it is positioned early. i'm see

let's get right to the big board and steve kornacki. steve what is happening there on the ground. this seems like a surprise. is it given the polling going in? take us what we're throughout we're seeing. >> there wasn't too much polling, one poll showed this very close, the yes leading 47 to 43. what's happening here -- there's a couple of things -- generally what you're seeing -- first of all you're seeing massive turnout. we think now about 800,000 people maybe more are gonna end up voting in this primary. typically in a kansas primary are looking at about 400 or 450,000 something in that neighborhood. so a massive spike in turnout that was generally generating clearly by this referendum. some of the highly populated counties. let's start with the biggest in the state, this is johnson county, the suburbs of kansas city. what they reported out here was the early vote, the vote by mail, the no vote racking up 72%. the early vote, and a vote by mail is me most friendly to democrats generally, so we assume it's the most friendly to the no vote. but we can see here in johnson county,

steve kornacki is with us all night. he joins us at the big board. i see once again you are choosing arizona to start with right now. we were talking to vaughn hillyard a few minutes ago. there was cheering in the lake headquarters. tell me why there would be. >> i think this is where they're is the most suspense right now, and think will be stuck in a state of suspense potentially for a few days. what you see here is the karen taylor robeson as a lead of eight points here statewide over kari lake. if you are watching an hour ago that was closer to ten points. so what's basically happened in arizona there are three phases to this vote. first, the county's report out, this is what happened in the 11 pm east our. all the votes they receive basically through yesterday. votes cast weeks ago. it was expected that big bucket of votes would be ten robson's best bucket of oats and will give her some lead and it did. then the question would be the next two buckets of votes. could she withstand what was in them. we are now in the second bucket of oats. we may

let's head back to steve kornacki at the big board. what do you know, steve? >> yeah. this is the way it works in arizona. sort of explosion of results in that first 20, 30 minutes or so after 11:00 p.m. eastern time. and you can see by 60% now of all the vote in this republican gubernatorial primary has been counted up and released. karrin taylor robson with the lead over kari lake here. it's about 8.5 points just in the last couple minutes. we got a big piece of realize here, a big chunk of pima county, where tucson is. a few more big geographically but won't be huge in terms of population and votes. there will be some more votes from these counties that are reported out tonight. what's going to happen is over the next -- over the next couple of hours they're going to report out votes that were cast in person today. but it's also going to turn and pill over into tomorrow. the ballots that were dropped off by people today have to be processed, have to be validated, signature verified. it can take days in arizona. i think the bottom line in trying to understand this ra

steve kornacki, back at the big board. steve, where do things stand right now? >> yeah we'll stephanie, you said the biggest toy so far of the night clearly, this one kansas, this referendum, constitutional amendments. that would stay the constitution and the state of kansas. does not provide for the right to abortion. goes down to defeat, goes down to defeat as you say, overwhelmingly. this is a tremendous surprise whatsapp and here. a lot of people did not see the fact of no winning, nor the magnitude of it. i think it's gonna be a political significant repercussions from this result. also the potential here, in terms of you see where the no votes, a lot of energy in the suburbs of kansas city. democrats have been saying hey, that is the area that there is the kind of voters who are gonna turnout in november two, for democrats. we will see if that happens. but this is the biggest headline of the hour. certainly, also by, now playing out is a very close house race in western michigan. in a very significant one to. it's a third congressional district here. now m

i want to go back to steve kornacki at the big board with the latest. steve. >> yeah we've got about 60,000 in their, we're starting to see a bunch of counties report votes. you can see no on this referendum by vote a little less than 2 to 1 margin with the early numbers. this is starting to come into focus on how this is going to play out tonight. what is looking out is consistently every county is reporting out that mail vote, that early vote first. that is the strongest most democratic vote, we know it's likely to be the strongest vote in opposition to this constitutional amendment. some of the counties that have come in, here's reilly county for instance, this is where manhattan, kansas, kansas state university. it just look here, in the 2020 presidential election, joe biden carried his county by about four and a half points. right now no has about a 50-point advantage. that is on the strength of the male vote and the early vote. you can expect in a county like riley county that number to come down as the night goes on and the same-day vote comes in

and let's bring in steve kornacki at the big board. le's start with the special election in new york where people are looking at how this is going to go because it may tell them something about the fall. >> it is in the hudson valley, in the catskills, the 19th congressional district and the democrat is pat ryan and the republican matt mollin. and that was not supposed to happen. that was supposed to show you that this is the ultimate swing district. this went for joe biden by a small margin in 2020. had gone for donald trump by a small margin in 2016 and voted further back for barack obama. so in many ways it is tracked with the country over the most recent presidential elections here. and so we've been talking about these special elections potentially, especially since that supreme court ruling over turning roe v. wade. raising the question has democratic enthusiasm gone up. we have seen the generic ballot and get tighter in the special elections potentially offering us a clue. so we'll be paying attention to this one tonight. and th

nbc news national political correspondent, steve kornacki joins me with the latest. so, steve, i just want to know first, i have this theory that we were going along with this issue of parental rights was going to win, and roe comes in and changes the dynamics of that. how much do you think roe changed what is going to happen in the midterms? >> i think tomorrow is potentially an interesting test of that question, because kansas is the state we are gonna have the first post dobbs decision referendum on the subject of abortion. what is on the ballot there in kansas tomorrow, is a constitutional amendment which would say there is nothing in the state constitution of kansas which enshrines the right to abortion. so, if this referendum passes tomorrow, it would then open the door, potentially, to the legislature into kansas having severe abortion restrictions, maybe an outright ban, something like that. so sort of a two-step thing that could potentially be initiated tomorrow. it's interesting, this has been on basically the same ballot measure, with four other state ball

let's go back to arizona, steve kornacki, and look at that governor's race being watched very closely. the dynamic has changed a bit overnight. >> yeah, it did. it was the overnight hours on the east coast. basically what happened here was carrie lake, the trump backed candidate did extremely well in some of these counties in the same day vote, the election day vote. that is to say the folks who went out to the polls yesterday and voted in person. that's what was counted overnight. lake was trouncing karen taylor robson. that vaulted carrie lake somewhere around 4:00 p.m. east coast time into the lead over taylor robson. you see the margin at over 10,000 votes. if you were watching late last night east coast time in the 11:00 p.m. midnight hour, we got a huge initial batch of votes, like 60% of all the vote in arizona. it put taylor robson ahead of lake by about ten points. the sequence in arizona is a three phase process for reporting out the vote. that big batch last night were all the early votes that arrived at election offices by monday. that's always what gets reported out first

joining me now, steve kornacki at the big board. how do the votes break down in that rank choice system? >> a lot of suspense in both races. we could pick it up with sarah palin's comeback attempt here. this is for the at-large congressional seat in alaska. special election to make this even more confusing. there's also yesterday a primary for the full two-year term that palin and these other candidates are all a part of as well. we will start with the special election right here. still have the votes being tabulated. this is a special election, as you say, being done by ranked choice voting. three candidates on the ballot. folks went to the polls yesterday. who is your first choice, second choice? you mark up your ballot like that. the key here is there were two republicans, palin and begicl and one democrat on the ballot. it looks like is happening -- some votes to be counted. it looks like peltola is on course to finish first in the initial round of tab ooh lags here. palin does have an advantage of over 5,000 votes over begich.

we have nbc national political correspondent steve kornacki. karen, let me start with you. you live here. you've been reporting here. watching it from afar, the secretary of state seemed absolutely shocked by the numbers of people that turned out yesterday. i mean, it was crazy! nobody would have predicted it. tell us how this happens in a very red state like kansas >>well, i think you're right. the secretary of state was absolutely stunned. his prediction was a 36% voter turnout. it turned out to be more than that from the unofficial results we have seen so far. closer to around 45%. nearly half of registered voters. that's a lot of people who say they care about the issue and went to the polls yesterday. >> amanda, the big question now is, is kansas a oneoff or tell us something about the country and frankly the energizing ability of the abortion issue? >> i think the numbers are so big. it's hard not to take a look and say wow, this is the first real data around how voters will react. it's been a long time. the democrats have been saying how important the issue is. now i

joining us from the big board is nbc's steve kornacki. steve, tell us what you're watching today. >> i think the marquee race today is actually not a primary. it's the special election, the 19th congressional district of new york. this is a competitive district politically. obviously we've been asking that question in the last couple weeks and months. has there been a shift in the midterm climate in the democrats' favor in the wake of the supreme court decision overturning roe versus wade. the 19th district in new york, hudson valley, out to the cat skills and look at how the district has noted in presidential elections, went for biden barely in 2020 by two points. go back to 2016, it went for trump by seven, so it was a trump, biden district in a normal midterm climate it favors the out-of-power peat. this looks like a good setup for the republicans. normally the out-of-power party does well in midterms. republicans would look for things to go back closer to where they were in 2016 so it's going to be an interesting special election beca

i want to bring back steve kornacki at the big board. i guess a lot of the questions is, can all of these trump-backed nominees in places like arizona be successful in a general election? >> and this is setting up a very interesting test potentially this fall in arizona, in a very critical state. we have a united states senate right now that is 50/50, republicans need a net gain of 1 to get back control of the senate and arizona will be one of the most important races in terms of deciding who wins the senate. so let's just start here, and what vaughn was just talking about, the one uncalled race here in arizona, and you do see kari lake taking the lead here, and the expectation that those late-arriving ballots that will be counted today and in the days ahead will be beneficial to her. if that trend does continues and lake wins this, as vaughn said, that would complete a sweep for donald trump in these republican primaries. because you've got lake there in the governor's race, you've got fincham in the secretary of state's race. you've go

. >>> back at the big board is steve kornacki. steve, good morning. good to see you. what stood out to you from last night's results? >> yeah, jose, it wasn't one of the primaries last night that was the big story. to me, it was the special election, special congressional election in new york's 19th congressional district. here you see the democrat, patriaian, defeating the republican. this is a classic swing district where this happened. take a look here. in 2020, donald trump lost the district to joe biden by two points. in 2016, trump had won it by seven. if you went back to 2012, obama won it in 2012. so it's kind of tracked with the country. obama, then trump, then biden. and it's exactly the kind of district that republicans felt would be ripe for them to peel off in a wave election year. but so much talk early on in this cycle about 2022 looming as a wave election e year. joe biden's approval rating is very low. the mood about the economy very sour. a year ago, republicans overperforming so dramatically in the virginia and new jersey nub thatter toial races. so

we have a lot to get to tonight, so let's get right to it with steve kornacki at the big board. steve? >> this is the story of the night, and i think this could be the story of the summer, politically, in terms of setting the stage for the midterm election. i am talking about the special election in new york 19 district, you mention pat ryan, the democrat defeated mark molinaro, the republican. ryan will go to fill the remainder of the antenna delgado seat. he will run in a different district this november. what mr. significant is several things. first of all, this is the last major special election tests before november election. it comes after a two month period when we had been questioning, folks have been questioning whether the political involvement in this country might be changing away from the republican favor and into the democrat direction. there have been a number of things that have been happening in the last few months, one, the generic ballot. when you ask folks in polling, which party would you like to see control congress, democrats or republicans, earlier this y

here to give us the latest on these key races and help us break it all down is the great steve kornacki at the big board. steve, what are you hearing out of alaska? what should we sort of be expecting in this night of nights? >> i guess patience. you should be patient i think as we get results at the poll from alaska they are now close they've indicated it will be a veteran hour till we start getting the results. what we are gonna get than our votes that were cast in person today, votes that were cast in person at early voting locations in the run up to this election. what's gonna take some time are votes that were cast by mail. there's time for those that were postmarked today to come in, they can take a while to come in. the entire process here to get all the votes tabulated can take a while, and what's really gonna slow things down in terms of getting it out come here, this is a ranked choice voting election here. what happened they had the initial race, or a bunch of candidates, and the rule in alaska is that the top four go to two to the final round. what happened in this race one

national correspondent steve kornacki. steve, good morning. if you're still up, thanks for the california coffee this morning. why exactly are we so focused on this 19th district the special election, upstate new york? >> yeah, willie, good morning to you. the reason is, we've been asking the question for the last two months, i think certainly triggered by that supreme court decision overturning roe v. wade and other backers. we've been asking the question whether the political climate broadly, nationally, has shifted away from ones in which republicans were in a strong, over dominant position heading into the midterm elections to one that perhaps is nor neutral and democrats have an opportunity at the senate and potentially the house level that, frankly, not even democrats thought they would have a few months ago. the backdrop for the special election. you see the final result, pat ryan, the democrat to defeat marc molinaro, just over or two points. this is a classic swing district that ryan did this. in the 2020 presidential election, joe bi

steve kornacki breaks down the numbers. good morning. welcome to "morning joe." it is monday, august 22nd. katty kay is still with us. 57% of americans believe the investigations into donald trump should continue. 40% believe it should stop. issues facing the country, threats of democracy has overtaken the cost of living. the poll shows a dissatisfied electorate. tracking with other numbers we've seen several months now, 74% of americans say the country is headed in the wrong direction. 58% believe america's best days are behind it. and 58% believe the united states is in a recession. republicans have a 2-point edge when it comes to which party voters want to control congress, though it is in the margin of error. tie game there. democrats significantly closed the enthusiasm gap. 68% of republicans express a high level of interest in the upcoming election, versus 66% for democrats. in may, that gap was 8 points. let's go to nbc news national political correspondent, steve kornacki, at the big board, and co-founder of axios, mike allen with us, as well. steve, take
