cantor: mr. speaker, i thank the gentleman. mr. speaker, since this is our first colloquy following the thanksgiving break, i'd like to ask the gentleman if he could give the members a sense of what legislation perhaps that we'll be voting on for the remainder of this month. i yield. mr. hoyer: first of all let me say to the gentleman it's my hope that we will adjourn the first session of the congress from the house perspective by the 18th. with respect to the bills that we are considering, obviously we have seven appropriation bills that have not yet been enacted. the continuing resolution expires on the 18th of december. it is my hope that before that time we will have provision for the passage of all seven of the appropriation bills. either individually, which may be difficult because the senate has not passed three of those bills on its floor, in one form or another we will have all seven of those bills passed prior to the 18th. the speak earn i and -- speaker and i and leader reid all want t

"washington journal" continues. host: joining us from new york, steve forbes, the author of "how capitalism will save us" -- former ceo. you indicate in your introduction that he began writing the book in 2007 before the economic collapse. what prompted you to write a book on capitalism at that time? guest: well, there's a lot of misunderstanding about what true free markets are. how they work and what rules are needed. in that sense even though most have a favorable view, it is like the proverbial fish not knowing that it is swimming in water. we have the system but people really do not understand how works. i thought the book with a question and answer format would be useful. then the disaster came along in the along2007, so we have to focus it on the fact that the whole

as my colleague, eric cantor said, during this difficult recession back in our district, families are cutting back. they are looking for where they can find savings. they are looking for maybe a second job to bring in a little more income, and yet they see washington, d.c. literally going to the floor, and on the very backs of our soldiers preparing to pass the debt limit increase that will raise the debt limit buy nearly $2 trillion. i mean, what the democrats are doing here is essentially facing difficult times by raising the debt limit on their credit card. that's not what the american people are doing right now. the people back in indiana, the people all across this country are making hard choices to pick their own fiscal house in order and put their family budget in order thanks to the leadership of steve scalise and kevin speed and the leadership of those that are gathered here. house republicans have a better plan. we believe that enactment of the cap and debt act would provide the accountability, clean up or down vote. let the american people count the role and see who in cong

what about more serious cases like cantor of long-term illness? our they handled? guest: what france does better is the fundamental advantage is that there is no insecurity. you wake up, you are born, you have health care. at american at any given time, scores of millions of people do not tell health care. we underestimate how much of an important deal that is. it does not bankrupt you and you move on. in america, the quality of the highest care is better. when i am 30 years old and i do not have many medical6ú issues d all i was catastrophic insurance, i would rather be in france. talk to me when i am 65 or 72 and i need an angioplasty or whatever, i would prefer to be in america for the procedure. the quality of the procedure is better than -- in america, not a huge amount better, but definitely better. in france it will not bankrupt you. another difference is that in america because we have this clause i-free market -- quasi- free market, it is individual- you ask your doctor for an opinion you get a second opinion. in france, they tell you how things are with
