anniversary, there was a ceremony in philadelphia. and president reagan went to philadelphia to participate in the ceremony. and he invited me to go with him. he invited senator h he ein -- senator heinz as well. but he had other commitments that day and did not go and it was a fascinating experience to travel alone with the president, talk to him on air force one, talk to him in the presidential limousine. and when we arrived at independence hall, they had a great wheel. and the wheel started with george washington, the first president, and then john adams and all the way around until it came to ronald reagan right next to george washington. and he and i talked about the drama that he experienced on the wheel right next to president washington. on that particular week, we had the confirmation hearings of judge bork for the supreme court of the united states, and september 17 when i traveled to philadelphia with the president, it was a thursday and i missed my opportunity to question judge bork. and i got that opportunity on saturday

a great place for a young 18 year old platform and philadelphia to go in 1944. after failing the eye examination some four months later i was admitted to the school at fort benning georgia. i was 18-years-old when i started the course, did well and was commissioned in 45, august 452nd lieutenant of infantry and sent to join the 93rd division. at that time i was 19-years-old. i joined the 369th infantry regiment just north of new guinea after the end of world war ii. now some of the old-timers, and i use that term very politely, can appreciate the anomaly but the 93rd division and 31st division nicknamed were assigned to the same throughout the war. i have yet to find anyone who can tell me why that happened that way. i was separated from active duty a year later in november of 1946 but stayed in the reserves. at college in february of 47 muhlenberg pennsylvania i entered as a second nebraskas of more premed major and his first black student. i lost my football scholarship by which i got into muhlenberg a couple months later due to an injury. in july of 1948 so 1
